To wonder if I am washing my hair too much?

I have long highlighted thick hair that falls past my shoulders.

I wash and condition my hair every other day. I have a sensitive scalp so cannot use dry shampoo. My hair is in reasonable condition as I use premium shampoos and i nourish it with using moroccon oil which it loves. However due to many years of highlighting and the odd straightening, there is a small amount of breakage, but it generally looks in good condition.

I've just been talking to my friend who was shocked at the washing my hair every other day and said I'm washing my hair too often. She has similar hair to me and says she can sometimes last 5 days between washes if it's not a gym day.

I'm now curious as to what other people are doing?

Mine is mid back length and thick but never dyed or blow dried. I wash it when I feel it needs it, which is normally every 5 days.

MegEmski · 13/12/2017 12:52

I wash my hair twice a week. Sometimes 3 times a week. It's long, thick and wavy / slight curl.

My hairdresser is always impressed with what good condition it's in.

Rarely use heat on it though and it's not dyed

redmarkone · 13/12/2017 13:00

my hair would be stinky and whiffy if i didnt wash it every other day!!

when i get a whiff of someones unwashed hair or hair smell masked with perfume its horrible - usually happens on the train or when we are reaching over each other at work or someone's leaning in to show you how to do something.

maybe some people can't smell it themselves.

on the other hand if you dont have smelly hair and can go 5 days without washing, i'm very jealous of you!!

magpiemischief · 13/12/2017 13:01

I am reading with interest. I have lost my hair due to Chemo which means I can start afresh when it grows back. At the moment I have been washing my scalp when I get a bath every other day but I might decide to go longer between hair washes. I can just stop using the small amount of shampoo I suppose. I might decide to do that actually.

Maudlinmaud · 13/12/2017 13:04

I wash mine daily, if I have a shower without washing it the humidity makes it a total frizz bomb. I know that I shouldn't wash it so often as this just makes it get greasy faster. My friend gets a week out of a salon curly blow dry and I am so jealous.

Dowser · 13/12/2017 13:09

Five days here too. Used to be every other but it’s got so dry as I’ve aged ( and thin) I treat it with kid gloves.
Washing it at 5 days puts a bit more life and moisture into it.

stickytoffeevodka · 13/12/2017 13:12

I think it really depends on your hair type, how you style it whether you do anything that makes it dirty/sweaty/greasy on a daily basis.

I used to work in food and I had to wash it everyday, else it would just stink of fat and grease. I worked with people in that job who clearly didn't wash it everyday, and it smelt and looked gross.

But if you work in an office and are sat at a desk everyday, then drive home, then it's not going to get smelly or greasy as easily.

Each to their own - people just need to do what works for them :)

catx1606 · 13/12/2017 13:13

I have really greasy hair and only wash it twice a week because I find that washing it every day makes it even greasier. If I washed it daily, it would be greasy by that evening. If I leave it a couple of days, I find it can take two to three days before it feels greasy. I only wash it more regularly in the summer because of sweating.

Aridane · 13/12/2017 13:14

I'm with your friend here

Janetjanetjanet · 13/12/2017 13:15

Problem is, people who do have greasy hair end up looking like they've stuck their head in a chip pan after 48 hours if they don't wash it.

No way I'd go five days, uck!

Ollivander84 · 13/12/2017 13:16

Mine is every 3-5 days but it's mega dry and thick. I don't use shampoo, conditioner only and it never gets greasy or smells

namechangedcantthinkofnewone · 13/12/2017 13:27

I used to wash my hair everyday as it's fine and greasy.

Since pregnancy I have stopped washing it as much, my head is really sensitive and extremely itchy now. I throw it up everyday, for days and days until it's a matted mess.

If I were to wear it down everyday it would need washed as it will be stuck to my head.

namechangedcantthinkofnewone · 13/12/2017 13:28

Apart from the matted mess from bobble at the back, my hair is in great condition, the best it's been. I think it's down to not using heat on it.

Hulder · 13/12/2017 13:33

I have fine hair and used to need to wash it every day or it looked terrible.

Since switching to SLS-free shampoo and silicone-free conditioner it looks much better and can go 4-5 days without washing easily. I also don't use heat on it.

I was convinced my hair loved silicones - convinced Frizzeaze user - but really it's much happier without. Morroccanoil is packed full of them.

Soubriquet · 13/12/2017 13:42

I wash mine once a week.

I don't get greasy hair so that helps. It's thick and almost down to my bum. It's also in great condition

Mrsdraper1 · 13/12/2017 13:43

I have thick hair but it has really thinned since I had the kids.
I have to wash everyday due to the worlds worst bed hair. It sticks up in weird shapes.
Also scalp gets itchy if I don't wash.

TheThriftGuardian · 13/12/2017 13:45

I really don't understand how you can shower every day but only wash your hair every other day or less. Doesn't your hair get wet in the shower anyway? If you shower without wetting your head and hair, don't you find your neck and ears still feel like they need a wash? And how do you then wash them without getting your hair wet? I'm genuinely confused by it. Then there's the frizzyness caused by the shower steam.. it's just easier to go the whole hog and wash my hair every time I shower tbh (every day) Confused

Ollivander84 · 13/12/2017 13:48

I use a shower cap and have the shower set so it is neck level

ImAMarshmellow · 13/12/2017 13:58

I used to wash my hair every 2nd day. I now wash it about twice a week. It's never looked better. It's lovely and shiny and had a lovely bounce to it. I do straighten it.

Hulder · 13/12/2017 14:02

If you have curly/wavy hair and have gone silicone-free the steam/bit of wet from the shower just refreshes your curls a bit and makes them go a bit longer til the next wash.

Fiona1984 · 13/12/2017 14:30

I don't have a shower in my house, I just put my hair in a bun if I'm having a bath but not washing it. It (mostly) keeps it out of the water

booboobutt · 13/12/2017 14:34

3-4 days. I use suplhate and silicone free shampoo and conditioner. When I used normal shampoo and conditioner I had to wash it every other day or it would feel greasy. It's much healthier washing it less frequently.

selassi · 13/12/2017 14:36

your hair is breaking due to the protein being damaged from highlights. Go into a hair shop or on Amazon and look for apogee 2 step protein treatment. it will fix that issue

PinkCrystal · 13/12/2017 14:37

Switch to every other day. So much easier.

Aridane · 13/12/2017 14:39

selassi - nothing appears on Amazon under 'apogee 2 step protein'
