To ask you what you love about Edinburgh

DP is being relocated to Edinburgh for work and I am currently a somewhat reluctant follower. I don't know Edinburgh at all and the only time I went I was very cold and there was a strong smell I think from a brewery.

I really want to be positive and on board with this move so please tell me all the great things about Edinburgh so that I can get excited about it and start looking forward to it. I'm desperate to fall in love with it. Literally anything please - what's great about living there?

I think Grangemouth is up and coming and has some lovely parts but wouldn't really call the area around Grangemouth as lovely overall.

BitOfFun · 13/12/2017 21:07

Good access to countryside though.

hooochycoo · 13/12/2017 21:20

wouldn't want INEOS as a neighbour.

BitOfFun · 13/12/2017 21:21

This one is not so pretty, and needs updating inside, but the area is fab, and very close to the west of the city.

itsbetterthanabox · 13/12/2017 21:38

Beautiful city. So much to see.
The fringe festival is amazing each year albeit busy!
Great restaurants, good travel links, lots to do but not crazy busy (except August). So much interesting history.
I love it! Except for how bloody hilly it is...

Major house envy!!!!

ForalltheSaints · 13/12/2017 22:05

I always enjoy visiting the Scottish Portrait Gallery and the book festival.

Originalfoogirl · 13/12/2017 22:11

That place is amazing!!! I’m in. We’ll need a bit more cash though....

I’ll just check the back of the sofa.

They aren’t so bad, plenty of places away from there are ok. Not sure I’d call Grangemouth up and coming though.🤔

Heading along to Bo’ness is nice. Linlithgow too - although that’s not so cheap these days.

Maddiston is villagey, on the edge of a town, and close enough to Edinburgh win win win!

gunsandbanjos · 13/12/2017 22:24

I wouldn’t live in Grangemouth!

BewareOfDragons · 13/12/2017 22:30

Edinburgh is the nicest city in the country. Truly,

weebarra · 13/12/2017 22:43

I moved to Edinburgh for university at 17, met DH and never really left.
We're in Midlothian now but I work in the city and it has many good points. I love the architecture, the green space, the independent shops in Stockbridge and the West End, the restaurants. It gets very busy with tourists, there are massive areas of deprivation, and the music scene isn't as good as Glasgow's.
For your budget I'd maybe be looking at Bo'ness, Dunfermline or Dalkeith, although that's south, rather than north!

BitOfFun · 13/12/2017 23:08

I must admit that Grangemouth swayed me because of the lovely house. And it was backing right onto a huge park.

BitOfFun · 13/12/2017 23:13

Oooooh, look, Biggar! I LOVE Biggar. Now, nobody can say that isn't a gorgeous place to live.

BitOfFun · 13/12/2017 23:20

Cor, this one could be a contender!

saladdays66 · 13/12/2017 23:22

The smell! :)

The museums, atmosphere, green spaces, friendliness of people, proximity to everywhere else , good schools...

dotdotdotmustdash · 13/12/2017 23:41

I was born and grew up in the city but left to go to Uni and never made it back (now live in Fife). DD has now started at Uni of E and I'm thoroughly enjoying seeing the city through her eyes.

The city I remember always had tourists and students but not to the extent it does now. Most folk headed 'up the town' on a Saturday and you would bump into multiple friends and relatives in Goldbergs or Princes Street. It's a very different place now and has lost the small town feel, although that's not necessarily a bad thing, just a thing.

I do sometimes wish I could move back there but a house like ours in an area I would want to live would be twice the price. Unfortunately since our budget it similar to that of the OP, I wouldn't consider it seriously. There are very good transport links from other places, like Fife, and a day trip to the city can be easily had.

Also, having lived in the West for 10 years, I would definitely agree that Glaswegians are friendlier but I can't bring myself to like Glasgow as a city as I find the blocks and streets all look the same and I get lost! Edinburgh is very neatly packaged into old/new town with Princes Street in the middle.

Also chippy sauce.

dotdotdotmustdash · 13/12/2017 23:45

You definitely get more for your money in Fife...

I’m going there this weekend and am very excited, I was a student there many years ago and absolutely love it. @rackhampearl can you recommend Christmassy things to do please? I have kids in their early teens.

There are a couple of places in South Queensferry-and it is lovely, train and bus connections to Edinburgh centre in about 15 mins. Beautiful town centre, friendly, lots of kids. And in Edinburgh places like the botanics, the galleries, the zoo, love them all.

pippitysqueakity · 14/12/2017 05:55

Blimey lalliella with Edinburgh's Christmas going on, its hardest to find non Christmassy things ATM! Smile

pippitysqueakity · 14/12/2017 05:57

Sorry, posted too soon. Just head towards town and the fair and markets from George Street onwards will do the rest! Bring plenty of money and enjoy!Xmas Smile

Iggi999 · 14/12/2017 08:18

One of Bof's housing suggestions is the next street over from my current house. Not victorian splendour but decent living standards without having to move actually out of the city, I'm happy. You won't get the advantages really if you live in Fife or WLothian but you certainly get the bigger house.

Iggi999 · 14/12/2017 08:19

Lalliella take them to the Winter wonderland and hand over wads of cash. Then sit back with a drink and relax.
