My DS 7months is a stunner. Small ,flat to his head ears, button nose, huge almond-shaped blue eyes, ...honestly, stick a ribbon in his hair and he'll be the cutest little girl. My father has delicate elfin features and so does DP despite being big, chunky guys so I fully expected him to be a looker. Anyway, My mum and dad both have brown-nearly black hair and eyes, as do all of my siblings. DP has dark hair and eyes with a dark dad and blondish mother. My little dude presents us with a shock of red hair. His skins a bit whiter than ours too. I'm delighted, don't get me wrong even our very diluted Mediterranean genes have produced generations of brunette, olivey kids and something different is very welcome. WTF though! How did that happen ? Anyone get surprise looking babies?

Red hair could be somewhere in either side of the family and might pop up every now and then

Hatsoffdear · 12/12/2017 15:34

My little dude! Ouch

Most people think their kids are good looking op though don’t they Wink sure he is gorgeous though.

None of my kids look alike. All 5 have different hair and eye colours.

Agree op it’s fasinating

ifihadonlyknown · 12/12/2017 15:42

Yes Hatsoff I suppose most people do. He's kind of 'catalogue pretty' if ya see what I mean , all in proportion and everything lines up nicely plus loooong lashes. I think I'm kinda objective as the minute I saw DD I said 'oh . At least she's healthy'. She looked like ET till she was 5 and she's pretty now but still has slightly big ears and is a bit thin. Nieces and nephews range from stunners to 'face for radio' too so we are a mixed bunch. Cant find a ginger for a few generations though. Must've beaten some odds...

Your post made me laugh love the ‘face for radio’ Grin

I love red hair it’s bloody ace. I want to see him now though Grin

Hoppinggreen · 12/12/2017 15:50

My dd is blonde, nobody else on either side of our family is a natural blonde and I’m so dark I pass for a native when in Southern Europe.
No idea where it comes from

ragged · 12/12/2017 15:51

Something like half British popn carry genes for red hair, but they are very recessive genes so can seem to come from nowhere. There's a place in Russian Federation where 1/3 the population are redheads.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 12/12/2017 15:51

My little dude 😂😂

He sounds gorgeous, I love red hair.

user1468353179 · 12/12/2017 15:52

I'm one of five. My sister and I have very dark brown, almost black hair. Two of my brothers have mousey hair, they were white haired as kids. My other brother had bright ginger hair until he started to go grey. I have a few blondes, dark haired and red headed cousins too,

chickenowner · 12/12/2017 15:53

Red hair requires a red hair gene from each parent and is recessive, so can 'hide' for many generations.

I'm a redhead and the rest of my family (including uncles, aunts, cousins) all have dark brown hair.

TroelsLovesSquinkies · 12/12/2017 15:54

I live the little surprises in their looks and colouring.
Ds1 came out red, a real shocker with me with nearly black hair and Dh with brown. I has toned down to a dirty blond now with red only in summer.
Ds2 came out with brown eyes Dh has grey blue and me blue with flecks of hazel . My mum has chocolate brown so must be her genes.
Looking back on photos now they are both grown, I thought they were stunners as babies, now I agree all Mums think their babies are gorgeous, mine looked just a bit odd Grin

SukiTheDog · 12/12/2017 15:54

The gene pool.... never 100% sure of what your going to be given!

Birchy1 · 12/12/2017 15:55

Both me and my exh have brown hair, he has dark brown eyes and I have dark green. My now 16yr dd still has the lightest long blonde hair and blue eyes !! If she hadn't looked so much like her dad at birth - I would have questioned the hospital as to whether I had the right baby !!!

TroelsLovesSquinkies · 12/12/2017 15:55

My spelling sucks, I love, not live, and It has toned down now, not I has toned down.

Sparklingbrook · 12/12/2017 15:55

My two took ages to get any hair at all, I was secretly pleased as I love a bald baby Grin. DS2's looked gingery at first but both turned out blonde toddlers and now have browny blonde hair..

userabcname · 12/12/2017 15:56

Not quite the same but I fully expected DS to look like his Dad. Everyone said how newborns always look like their fathers; being a boy I kind of assumed he would look more like DH; DH and his siblings all look like their dad so kept telling me what strong genes they have...anyway, DS is born looking exactly like me! I mean to a startling degree! If you compare baby pics of him and me at his age, you'd think it was the same baby. DH and his family can't believe it!

Allthetuppences · 12/12/2017 15:57

Both of my parents have very black hair. My dad tans my mum does not. I am a red head with freckles my brother a blonde who tans. Genes are funny things.

Nicecuppatea21 · 12/12/2017 15:58

If anyone in your family tree is of Irish or Scottish origin the offspring have a chance of having red hair.

tellitlikeitispls · 12/12/2017 15:59

My DHs family are redheads. Very pale. Scottish origins.

I also have Scottish origins, but my mother is Thai, so I'm olive skinned, brown eyes, dark brown hair.

When DS1 was born he had bright red hair and blue eyes. He then went very blonde. He is nearly 11 and has greeny blue eyes and the most amazing hair which only really reveals itself in sunlight because its an amazing mix of every shade from white to light brown with all the reds in between.

DS2 was born sort of golden blonde. Also blue eyed. He now has dark blonde hair and greeny blue eyes.

Both of them have more olive toned skin though, not whitey-pink like DH.

I love having fair kids! They look like me, and yet.. they don't!

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 12/12/2017 16:01

It seems some recessive fair/red genes have been lurking in both you and DPs families, masked by the dominant and therefore expressed dark skin/hair genes. But then you met and happened to both pass on the recessive traits, hence your handsome little redhead.

Never let on that you don't think your daughter is equally good looking though! That is the kind of thing a girl can overhear and find hurtful ever after.

ButterfliesAreWeird · 12/12/2017 16:02

Red is a mutation that can be created. It's a beautiful hair colour just like the rest

jaseyraex · 12/12/2017 16:02

I'm a red head. None of my family can think of anyone far back enough that had red hair also, my Nana tells me I'm the milkmans! I am Scottish though so I suppose there must be someone somewhere down the line with red hair.

ShyOyster · 12/12/2017 16:03

My boy’s hair and eyes colour is not particularly surprising. I, however, grew up believing I must have been adopted because I look like no one in my family. My sister, parents, grandparents and all known extended family are relatively short and all dark haired, ranging from brown to black.
I’m a talk blonde. Also, everyone in my extended family has wavy or curly hair, mine is straight. To make it even stranger, there is an old photograph of my grandma’s second cousin we found a while back and I am a spitting image of her (black and white photo though, so unsure of eye colour).
Genetics is a wonderful thing.

ShyOyster · 12/12/2017 16:03

Tall blonde, of course

LadyRoughDiamond · 12/12/2017 16:04

I'm blonde and pale, my husband's dark and mixed-race (Indian) - with our two boys it literally looks like we got one each! All my genes seem to have gone to the eldest, all my husband's to our youngest and yet, somehow, they still look like brothers. Bizarre but gorgeous!

Nicecuppatea21 · 12/12/2017 16:09

I wish we could see pics the babies sound adorable!!

I second never ever saying something negative about children's looks. My dad did this once when I was about 6 and I thought I was ugly for way way too many years. My dad is a pet and would probably cry if I told him the impact of his words so I never said anything to him.

When someone said I looked nice I thought they felt sorry for me. Luckily my first boyfriend convinced me otherwise.

Sorry for derailing. The babies sound divine.
