AIBU?

Neighbor complaint - people using his drive to turn

Sorry I can't add diagram.

So we live on the cul de sack with a turning area. Each house has a driveway. No one parks in the turning area as we have large driveways and there is in shot parking as well.

Since we moved in earlier this year for some reason people use our drive to turn rather than going to the end of the road and use the turning area. This was particularly annoying in the dark evening with car lights.

We got a new fence with automatic driveway gates added last week. This now means people can't use our drive to turn. Our next door neighbor came over yesterday to complain that people are now using his drive instead of ours. We told him there isn't anything we can do. We suggested he put up a sign saying no turning.

He has now posted a note through the door (even though I'm working from home) saying he will be complaining about us at tonight's residents meeting.Xmas Hmm. He thinks we should have discussed our fence/gate plans with neighbors before installing them as they now have to deal with what was our problem. We didn't need permission for the fence or gates.

Aibu to think that people turning on his drive isn't our problem?

‘I’m going to complain about you at the residents meeting ‘
‘Ok Geoffrey, knock yourself out’

When neighbor came round yesterday he asked to speak with DH, even though I opened the door.
Says it all. Well women can’t possibly deal with any “serious business” can they? Wink I’d hazard a guess that all the other neighbours think he’s a right pain in the arse as well.

um....as you say resident's meeting, I'm a bit concerned about the set up where you live. is it possible that you were supposed to get permission for gates? The fact you have an RA means there's a collective, so just wondering, as I know people who live on streets where they are all responsible for the road and there's various rules...

you don't want to end up with egg on your face at the meeting.

I can imagine how annoying this was because I used to live in a ground floor flat by the car park and lights on and off into your lounge at night even with the curtains closed were annoying.
Have you got a dropped kerb? What are the rules of using it?
Please live stream, neighbour sounds like a delight. Surely his argument is with all of the other neighbours rather than you?

Wow, what a selfish arse. I can see how annoying it is when people turn in your drive but he was happy for you to put up with it but not him? Would love to be a fly on the wall at the residents meeting.

Shamelessly place marking Grin
Do you know any of the other neighbours well enough to ring round and ask their opinion?

Have you checked any restrictions applying to your house re fences etc. We rented in a cul de sac where fences etc were not allowed

How high are the gates/fencing? Because if over 1m high you would most likely need planning permission, regardless of whether there are no estate rules in addition.

A neighbour of mine opposite wanted three car lengths of road kept clear on my side so she didn't have to look where she was reversing. She even didn't like where I position my car across my drive. I was polite when I was speaking to her, and waited until she left before laughing so hard I thought my skeleton was trying to escape through my mouth.

I wonder if there is CFNet where people come together to give tips to annoy each other. If not, I shotgun being a moderator on the inevitable "Am I Being Reasonable?" thread Grin

I can imagine the meeting not going so well. You're the new person and it sounds like a bunch of the other residents were previously trespassing on your drive and will feel entitled to do so.

I'm assuming that these are not just random people turning in your /his drive. They are either other residents, their visitors or deliveries

Of course YANBU! Tell him at tonight’s meeting that you can recommend a good company to install a gate and stop people turning in his driveway although point out very clearly to the other residents that if he does so, he will then just be dumping the problem on them! Grin
