Have put on weight, trying to get a grip on it.

My digital scales show:
10.13.2 stone/pounds
69kg

when I looked it up online 69kg is 10.8 stone.
Am I just misunderstanding the 10.8 - is it and eighth of stone rather than 10.8 pounds?
Maths has never been my strong point and I've thoroughly confused myself.

Downside: whatever it is, I still way far too much! Maybe I should just throw them out of the window?

Yep, you've understood correctly - or at least the same way as I understand it! I have a hard time with imperial measurements as I wasn't taught them as a child.

I'd suggest just using your scales and sticking to those. Good luck!

whyhastherumgone · 09/12/2017 12:30

Thank you! Hubby just told me 10.13.2
is 10 stone 1 pound rounded down - he was all smug about it. Surely this is not correct and it's 10 stone 13 pounds?
Dear god. I need a biscuit and a maths refresher I think.

I think your DH meant 11 stone less 1 pound

dementedpixie · 09/12/2017 12:36

0.8 of a stone is roughly 11lb. 10.8 stone doesn't mean 10stone 8lb, it means 10 stone plus 0.8 of a stone

frieda909 · 09/12/2017 12:37

10.13.2 means 10 stone, 13 pounds and 2 ounces.

There are 14 pounds in a stone so you’re just under 11 stone, so 10.8 stone is about right.

BornInSydneyy · 09/12/2017 12:37

69kg is 152lbs.

So 10 x 14 = 140

Add the extra 12 and that makes you 10 stone 12lbs.

Quartz2208 · 09/12/2017 12:38

69kg is 10.866 which is 10stone and then 0.866 of a stone. A stone is 14 lbs so 0.866 of a stone is

0.866 x 14 = 12.1 so it’s 10 stone 12 lbs

Weedsnseeds1 · 09/12/2017 12:42

10.13.2 is 10 stone plus 13.2 pounds
69kg is 10.8 stone 14 pounds in a stone so divide by 10= 1.4 pounds = 0.1 stone
1.4 x8 =11.2 so 10.8 stone = 10 stone 11.2 pounds.
Your scales aren't quite calibrated between metric and imperial

Weedsnseeds1 · 09/12/2017 12:43

Cross posted, but yes taking into account the extra 0.066 10 stone 12

Notevilstepmother · 09/12/2017 12:50

Decimals work well with metric but not with imperial.

Try this one.

www.matthewb.id.au/converter/stones-to-kilograms-conversion.html

It says 10 stone 13 pounds and 2 ounces is 69.456 kg.

Notevilstepmother · 09/12/2017 12:52

Personally, I go with whoever it was that recommended ditching scales and seeing how your jeans fit.

lurkingnotlurking · 09/12/2017 12:58

Something else I've found - if you ask what the conversion is to stones then you get one answer, and a different answer if you ask for the conversion to stones and pounds. Why?

whyhastherumgone · 09/12/2017 12:59

Thank you all, I checked with DH and he said no, 10 stone 1 pound so I showed him this thread HA.

As I thought. Thanks for explaining, lot clearer now.
And yes, jeans as a guide is probably much better. I'm on my period at the moment as well which always causes a 'weight' gain.
Gonna crack back on with the healthy eating and 30 day shred and take body measurements as well, probably be a better guide.

Am I just misunderstanding the 10.8 - is it and eighth of stone rather than 10.8 pounds?

Yes, in short.

However, 69 kilograms is actually 10.8656 stone. You can't just drop the final three decimals.

And here, yes the .8656 refers to .8656 of a stone, not .8656 pounds.
(i.e., 14 X 0.8656) = 12.2lb

That still doesn't correspond to what your scale told you—did you step off the scale in between the imperial and metric readings? If so the scale probably gave you a slightly different reading the second time.

whyhastherumgone · 09/12/2017 13:19

I didn't step off, no. I think the scales aren't that great to be honest.

OP posts:
Quartz2208 · 09/12/2017 13:29

Did the scales say 69 or were they decimal too

Chrys2017 · 09/12/2017 16:44

It's roughly correct. It seems to have missed off the decimal places on the kilogram reading. It should actually read 69.393 kilos (= 10st 13lb 2oz).

frieda909 · 10/12/2017 11:06

.8 of a stone isn’t an eighth of a stone. It’s eight-tenths (8/10) of a stone.

NeverUseThisName · 10/12/2017 11:10

Maybe I should just throw them out of the window?

This Grin

I find a nice pair jeans to be the best way of tracking my weight.

lurkingnotlurking · 10/12/2017 11:14

If your scales are inaccurate, did you know you need to reset them to zero before stepping on? Otherwise they will weigh you wrongly

Firesuit · 10/12/2017 11:20

If the scale said "69 kg" that means between 68.5 and 69.4 (or between 68.50 and 69.49, etc.)

10.13.2 is 10 stone plus 13 pounds plus 2 ounces
= 10 x 14 + 13 + 2/16 pounds
= 153.125 pounds

153.125 pounds / 2.205 pounds per kilogram
= 69.444 kilograms.
which is between 68.500 and 69.499 inclusive

So the scale isn't misaligned.

(Though I would have thought it would have once decimal point, so would read 69.4.)

Firesuit · 10/12/2017 11:24

Although google says 153.125 pounds is 69.456 kilo, so my conversion is slightly out.

TheCowWentMoo · 10/12/2017 11:42

I think 10st 13 pounds is 69.4kg so the scale would round down to 69kg if it doesn't have decimal points, so the scales are still correct

kaytee87 · 10/12/2017 11:46

God I wish 10 st 13 actually meant 10 st 1 Grin

singleWhiteMale · 10/12/2017 12:19

Google will do unit conversions.
Search for this in google:

10 stones 13.2 lb in kg

and you get 69.490kg (approximately)
That's 69kg to the nearest kg, just as your scales say.
