To think that a lot of shop bought sandwiches are a bit crappy and expensive?

Just that really. They usually have plain white or brown bread only, no wholemeal or rye or spelt or anything more adventurous.
Too much mayonnaise, not enough ham or cheese between the bread slices, not enough veggie or vegan options. They're expensive too.
Some of Waitrose and M&S sandwiches are OK. Some of their wraps are not too bad but delicious, mouth-watering veggie/vegan sandwiches are hard to find in supermarkets I think.
Oh well, best to make them yourself. Or have salad instead.

I find Morrison's meal deal good value. I bought a Christmas sandwich, a drink, and some sushi all for £3. The sandwich was delicious.
I also rate Aldi. Brie and Cranberry sandwich. Lovely wholemeal bread. £1.69.

WHen I worked in London there were loads of independent sandwich shops that made up your request. Delicious and fresh.

Am partial to a tuna/ cucumber Pret nowadays.

SwedishEdith · 09/12/2017 16:53

Pret's are good value as have way more filling than other places so that's all I need for lunch. Don't need any extras.

The little baguettes for the brie and cranberry are gorgeous. And loads of lovely curried chickpea fillings.

On the whole they are shite.

Only place I buy from would be the local health food store. They have them delivered fresh each day from a vegan cafe. Can't rely on that however as they sell out quickly.

The M and S Turkey one sponsored by Shelter is GORGEOUS

As is the Pret Shelter one.

Turkey, stuffing, sausages, cranberry, bacon.

Starting to drool again

I like the cheese and onion ones you get. I also like the Greggs tuna crunch baguette.

Ragwort · 09/12/2017 18:05

I think even Pret sandwiches aren't as good as they used to be.

bastardlyandmutley · 09/12/2017 18:11

I used to really like Greggs sandwiches years ago when they just used to do simple fillings on really tasty bread at sensible prices. I went in one yesterday to get something for lunch and walked out again. Why are they selling things like potato wedges & Mac Cheese?

expatinscotland · 09/12/2017 22:18

Gregg's sandwiches have hardly anything in them now. Two bits of chicken, 3 quid. And avoid the Pret in T5 at Heathrow, it's minging.

AsMenDclaredWomenTheirInferior · 10/12/2017 04:15

From Waitrose today I purchased two turkey, bacon and stuffing sandwich's & the filling also included cranberries and spinach apparently (reduced down to 49p each).
Hooray I thought, how lucky am I and you know you cant go wrong with turkey & stuffing can you?
Well whatever was in these sandwiches didn't taste anything like turkey & stuffing and tasted a bloody horrible mess.

How the supermarkets manage to suck all the flavour out of what should be decent sandwich's is beyond me?
All I know is they are experts at it! Sad

TheDuchessofDukeStreet · 10/12/2017 04:25

I prefer to make my own. If I need to buy, I like the M&S ham, soft cheese and cheddar. DP says the best one he has had recently is a chicken one from the Deli to go range at a Shell garage!

Roystonv · 10/12/2017 04:31

They serve a purpose and because of this they will always sell so price and quality rarely come into the equation then add on must be easy to slice, pack, to stay neat etc and they are on to a winner whatever.
