To think that a lot of shop bought sandwiches are a bit crappy and expensive?

Just that really. They usually have plain white or brown bread only, no wholemeal or rye or spelt or anything more adventurous.
Too much mayonnaise, not enough ham or cheese between the bread slices, not enough veggie or vegan options. They're expensive too.
Some of Waitrose and M&S sandwiches are OK. Some of their wraps are not too bad but delicious, mouth-watering veggie/vegan sandwiches are hard to find in supermarkets I think.
Oh well, best to make them yourself. Or have salad instead.

"Oh dear, I must be very poor at sandwich making because I find your typical M&S/ Tesco sarnie, far more interesting than anything I'd make at home."

Exactly. They often have more ingredients than I'd bother to put in and I don't buy special bread myself because it's more expensive.

TheFirstMrsDV · 09/12/2017 13:51

They are always too cold. I love a good egg sarnie but shop ones are tasteless and freezing

BlueThesaurusRex · 09/12/2017 13:53

Yanbu and I hate the fact they’re refrigerated too- just seems to make them worse imo.

Catinthecorner · 09/12/2017 13:55

Bob, could I derail the thread and ask you to tell me how to make sourdough bread. Love it and it costs a bomb here

MikeUniformMike · 09/12/2017 14:00

Never eat them straight away or straight from the fridge. They will be too cold.
I find the Boots ones usually very tasty and some of the M&S ones (depends on the bread).
If they are low calorie/healthy option/gluten free then I won't bother.

llangennith · 09/12/2017 14:05

My favourite sandwich costs £1.10 from Tesco. Three cheese filling, white bread. YummySmile

TotemIcePole · 09/12/2017 14:06

Im so bloody miserable, I wont buy much when Im out. I would rather spend £700 a year on a holiday & starve, than spend £3 a day on lunch

I eat cheese and crackers at work and if Im pushing the boat out, homemade cheap carrot & coriander soup.

I probably need to get a life Xmas Grin

PuppyMonkey · 09/12/2017 14:07

Too much mayo, not enough butter, too cold, too many tomatoes.

snotandbothered · 09/12/2017 14:10

Too. Many. Ingredients.

I find them all overstuffed and sickly.

Good quality bread, a SINGLE protein (ham, cheese, chicken, salami, seafood whatever) some salad leaves, a smear of mayo and a crunch on pepper. Lovely.

All the sandwiches in Watrose/M&S etc seem to be competing to stuff as many different elements in so they can charge £4.90. Result is no flavour and mushy texture. Honestly makes me feel queasy and i LOVE a good sandwich.

Nyx1 · 09/12/2017 14:10

Totem "Im so bloody miserable, I wont buy much when Im out"

not miserable at all. up to you how you spend your money.

I took peanut butter and banana sandwiches to work once and my boss said "gosh, are the finances that bad" Grin

there was banana and bread to use up and I needed to make something fast...so it seemed completely logical to me!

Roussette · 09/12/2017 14:12

Years ago, I couldn't make a sarnie to match a bought one. Now they're just not so good, my sandwiches are sooooo much better.

My BLT is to die for Grin

AsMenDclaredWomenTheirInferior · 09/12/2017 14:14

I went into Greggs awhile ago and I asked for a sandwich with butter on.
The shop assistant said "You can't have one of those because it is not our policy to use butter"
So I asked why not?
She replied "because it is not our policy"
and I asked again " Why? and if when she makes herself a sandwich at home does she always butter the bread first?
Of course she agreed she always did.
She couldn't answer why it was Greggs policy not to use butter on their sandwiches only that it was.
Of course Greggs are saving themselves lots of money by not adding butter to their sandwiches.
And that is all it comes down to.. money, money, money!

HarrietKettleWasHere · 09/12/2017 14:20

My fave sandwich was a good old reliable ham and mustard mayonnaise from M&S.

Mysteriously about two years ago it 'lost' about 50 of its calories...I assume in the bread. It just tastes shit now.

I 'treated' myself to a little selection one the other day- the one with egg mayo, chicken salad, prawn mayo and a ham I think. pretty much could not tell which one I was eating at a given time as there was hardly any flavour or taste in any of them. I was so annoyed I tweeted m&s who said I could have brought it back and swapped it...nah, don't think I'll bother with their sandwiches anymore! The Christmas one is shit too.

That's not good for M&S. Let's face it, people aren't going in there for the fashion.

LostInTheTunnelOfGoats · 09/12/2017 14:20

Oh I don't mind a shop sandwich. I have them so rarely that I almost relish that shoppy taste, and they remind me of spontaneous picnics with my mum.

Mind you, I used to love the m&s sandwiches from about ten years ago. They did a brie one which was divine. Now they're just the same as any other place

bertsdinner · 09/12/2017 14:21

None are great, Subway are the worst, I think they taste strange.
Greggs used to do a nice sandwich, in those triangle shaped packs, but only seem to do them in the low calorie range now. The bread was really nice.

HuskyMcClusky · 09/12/2017 14:25

I can’t even stand the smell of Subway. I found myself walking in an arc to avoid one the other day.

rookiemere · 09/12/2017 14:27

I really like the M&S turkey feast one, plus its giving 50p to charity for each one so feel like I'm doing good. The pret one has too much gloopy mayo on it - sadly I common complaint for Pret sandwiches.

I should get better at making my own and bringing them in. Thing is I quite like posh ingredients so unless I use all of them for pack lunches, then it's no cheaper than buying something each day, which at least gets me out of the office for a bit.

rookiemere · 09/12/2017 14:27

I like subway salads. If you go for the salad of the day its £2.80 and is packed full of lettuce, tomato, olives etc.

HarrietKettleWasHere · 09/12/2017 14:29

I hated my last job so much that going out and selecting what disappointing sandwich to consume that lunchtime was the highlight of the day Blush

Roussette · 09/12/2017 15:05

I worked somewhere once near a pie and pasty shop. It was my idea of heaven. Had to leave the company because I put on too much weight Grin

expatinscotland · 09/12/2017 15:17

I'm not keen on Subway. DD2 has a crush on one of the guys who works in our local one so keeps dragging me in there.

BrizzleDrizzle · 09/12/2017 16:19

I tried the M&S turkey one, it was disgusting - cardboard bread and a mush of stuff in the middle.

However modern day sandwiches are far superior to those offered by British Rail in the 1970s.

PumpkinSquash · 09/12/2017 16:22

What I hate about shop bought sandwiches is that they put mayo in 99% of them. They're obsessed with the stuff. Step away from it!
Doesn't matter where you go, the blasted stuff is in the sandwiches and it is so hard to find ones that don't have any in.
