Hi , I'm going to be a New mum and ready to do shopping for our new arrival, but I'm confused as to what's best for baby in terms of sleeping, is a crib/Moses basket or cot better. Moses basket they outgrow it quickly then you have to invest in cotbed, but don't want to be spending unnecessarily, please advise, thank you.

You'd be better off asking in the parenting part of the forum

chocolateorangeowls · 08/12/2017 19:53

I had a nexttome, Moses basket, rocking crib and cotbed. I may have gone a bit OTT but she used them all.

Imaginosity · 08/12/2017 19:57

I'd get a moses basket and a standard sized cot. We got a cot bed to last until my son was 5 but he moved into a single bed when he was 3 so a smaller cot would have done us.

LentilBaby · 08/12/2017 19:58

Going from Moses basket to cot on Monday. Will be 10 weeks then.

lurkingnotlurking · 08/12/2017 20:01

I found moses baskets to be useful for moving them around when asleep in the day time. But not for nights. I hacked an ikea cot to take the side off and bring it to the same level as my bed. Co-sleeping works best for me.

EssentialHummus · 08/12/2017 20:04

IKea sells a £60 “Gulliver” cot that works with a side off and at two heights, so effectively from age 0 to 3/4. We’ve gone for that plus a Sleepyhead (no need to buy in advance, can always gets after if you feel it’ll help). I personally don’t see what Moses baskets are for.

Mandraki · 08/12/2017 20:10

We have a Moses basket, defo get a solid based one as we started with a wicker one but it was saggy and she was uncomfortable. She was very snug in the solid base one. Just tonight moved her to her proper big girls cot, she’s 11 weeks so she’s definitly ready size wise!

Zevitevitchofcrimas · 08/12/2017 20:11

Co sleeper, moses for down stairs, then cot bed.

Needmorehands · 08/12/2017 20:11

All our DC loved the amby baby hammock, lasted much longer than a moses basket less bulky than a cot and travelled wit us easily :)

iloveredwine · 08/12/2017 20:14

we had a Moses basket then straight into a cot/bed. it was great. x

britbat23 · 08/12/2017 20:21

The best one is the one which your baby will actually sleep in, which will be the third or fourth one you buy

Pickleypickles · 08/12/2017 20:24

My bedroom was only small so dd slept in that in my room until she was too big for it (she was little so about 4 months), and then in the day you can just move it round the house with you, i couldnt imagine not having a moses basket next time!

ADuckNamedSplash · 08/12/2017 20:27

Moses basket to start with - yes, they outgrow them quickly, but the main advantage is that they're portable, so baby can sleep wherever you are (as per the safe sleeping guidelines). Then a cot. I couldn't see the advantage of cotbeds for the reason given by Imaginosity - the kid is going to need a single bed eventually anyway, so what's the benefit of extending the life of the cot?

I'd never use a sleep positioner like a Sleepyhead - many shops have recently stopped selling them over safety concerns.

daisypond · 08/12/2017 20:29

Moses basket, then cot, then a full-size single bed. We were given both, so no expense. All three of the DC used them one after the other.

EB123 · 08/12/2017 20:30

I never had a moses basket for any of my three.

We had a next 2 me crib for ds3 and I loved it. He stayed in it until around 8 months old and he was a big baby. It is great for travelling too.

isthistoonosy · 08/12/2017 20:31

We just used a standard cot from birth. We were lent a ricking crib but both babies hated it.

wasMissD · 08/12/2017 20:38

Moses baskets are great as they're cheap and are bed height for middle of the night. Also portable (but my son wouldn't sleep in his during the daytime). They don't last long but you can buy one for £30.
My son went into his cotbed at 8 weeks old. He settled straight away in it.
I do sometimes wish I'd had a crib where the side came off so Baby was "next to me", as that would've been handy, but for me it was an expense I couldn't justify.
Good luck with the baby Smile

mirime · 08/12/2017 20:39

We had a Moses basket for downstairs, but only because it was a free loan from a family member.

Had a rocking crib and a cot bed as well, got them second hand. Crib was great for seven months when DS refused to sleep in it anymore and we've been co-sleeping since. He's four now, the cot bed is up against ours to expand the space we have, or DH would spend most nights on the floor.

PurpleTraitor · 08/12/2017 20:40

Both my babies slept in the Moses basket until between 6-7 months old.

Well, sometimes. Usually on me.

Scottishgirl85 · 08/12/2017 20:42

Bedside crib lasted until six months, then dd moved into her own room to a cot bed that will last her until she's about 6. Don't waste money on a Moses basket, they're tiny!

roobrr · 08/12/2017 20:43

We bought a moses basket then switched to the cot. Plus moses baskets are really cheap so you aren't spending a lot even though they outgrow them quickly.

glow1984 · 08/12/2017 20:44

Another one here who had a Moses basket. But we also had a cotbed. DS used the Moses basket for daytime naps

RadioGaGoo · 08/12/2017 20:46

I regret not having a next to me cot.

Sleepyheads are being sold in major retailers in the UK. I doubt this would be the case if there were safety concerns.

RacingRaccoons · 08/12/2017 20:46

I had a Chicco Next2Me in my bedroom for him to sleep in, then I had a Moses basket for living room naps and then my DS had/has a cotbed in his bedroom (although he only went in his own room at 13 months).

Amanduh · 08/12/2017 20:48

We had a moses basket. In living room for day then right next to bed at night. He was in in until 6 months! Then straight in to cot in our room, then same cot in his own room at 10 months. Worked so well for us
