You don't have a "rescue", you have a fucking dog!

Is this a recent phenomenon? It seems like everyone who has a dog that wasn't bought from a breeder feels the need rub their virtue in others' faces every single time they mention the darned mongrel. "My poodle Henry -he's a two year old rescue - loves cheese!" It's like veganism but with dogs. Don't they realise how sanctimonious they sound?

RESCUE DOG DEFINITION!

A rescue dog is a dog that has been placed in a new home after being abused, neglected, or abandoned by its previous owner.[1] The term can also apply to dogs that are found as strays, surrendered by owners following relationship breakdowns, moving home where the owner is unable or unwilling to take their pets, or elderly people who are not permitted to take their dog(s) into a nursing home.[2]

A rescue dog is one that has been abandoned for some reason and rehomed FFS! It's not just a St Bernard up a mountain with a bottle of brandy!

To the people poo-pooing the phrase 'rescue dog' for one that has been abandoned and rehomed; educate yourself (That includes the OP!) Hmm

And I’ve got no reverse snobbery going on here. I bought a one year old poodle cross breed because the lady that had her from a puppy suddenly died. She’s not a pedigree and she’s not from a rescue centre. Don’t care! We paid a fair price to give a lovely home to a lovely little dog who came from a lovely home. If you can give a new home to a dog that needs a new home then that’s a good thing to do. If you can’t then fair enough. Don’t understand any of the angst about it. Some people don’t even want a pet!

Beerwench · 08/12/2017 19:40

@Her0utdoors

People assume dh's dog is 'a rescue'. Nope, unfortunately all her behavioural issues are our own work sad

Not a Jack Russell is she?! Because I've had mine from weaning, knew her parents and breeder and I swear I'd have had better luck trying to train a lion while wearing a meat suit than my JR! I've had a German Shepherd, a Spaniel and have a Westie and she's been the hardest to train by far. She is however unbelievably loyal, a one person dog and actually recalls, sits, lies and rolls over but she's 6 and it's still a work in progress to be honest. One whiff of something more interesting and attention is gone, and she has more stamina than all the other dogs put together.

I rescued my rescue from going into a rescue... OP did your head explode there? Grin
I was looking for another dog after losing one and someone loosely connected was looking to rehome one. She now lives here. I don't refer to her as a 'rescue' though. She's just my dog.

My dog was handed in so not technically a rescue. I tend to say that we got him from the SPCA (equivalent of the RSPCA where I live). I don't feel virtuous to have him, I feel lucky! We got him at 8 weeks, so any tricky behaviours he has are all our fault :) He is a true mutt/mongrel/Heinz 57 as his father is unknown, spaniel on his mums side. Our cats are from the SPCA too, but I don't tend to talk about that because a) people don't ask and b) it's pretty standard.

I like to talk to other people who got their dogs from rescue as they all have interesting stories, and yes I do try to encourage friends and family to look at rehoming and feel sad when they get puppies from back yard breeders and puppy farms instead. If that makes me sanctimonious then so be it.

Miaow he is a stunner!

I've always had a soft spot for ugly dogs so mine will never star in sausage adverts!

Nancy91 · 08/12/2017 19:51

The greyhound in a snood is the cutest thing ever

PositivelyPERF · 08/12/2017 19:51

I'm a vegan and I have a rescue dog and five rescue cats, so yay boo sucks to be you! 😝 I have no idea how old the dog is, but taking his health and appearance into consideration, I'd say 10yrs plus.

I run a doggy daycare and want to know if any of the dogs are rescues, because I may need to be extra patient and gentle with them. This is because many of them have been neglected or abused.

blows raspberry 😛

lynmilne65 · 08/12/2017 19:52

My cats are rehomed, we have a love fest!!

shhhfastasleep · 08/12/2017 19:55

Miaow, she is rocking that coat. Your other lovely has a real spark in the eye.
Thread Derail alert but look up the Vet Ranch channel on YouTube. Shelter animals usually on the point of being put down because they are so poorly and unloved. Saved by heroic vets.

mustbemad17 · 08/12/2017 19:56

My 9 year old, really poorly rescue girl not long before we had to have her PTS. She was rescued from the pound 20 minutes before being PTS; had been bred to death, had a cyst on her liver & various issues that required a lot of TLC & specialised food.

I'm proud of the rescue that saved her when many wouldn't - she cost them thousands in the 18 months she was safe. We had her 6 months & she was the stroppiest bird i'd ever had. I'm proud to say my dog was a rescue!!

lynmilne65 · 08/12/2017 19:58

( they are not allowed upstairs!)

Jenniferturkington · 08/12/2017 19:59

Yanbu
We have a poodle. We are smug as she isn't a cockerpoo. We are lower on the smugness scale than the 'rescue' owners.

KarmaStar · 08/12/2017 20:00

Most dog owners who have rescue dogs announce it because they are proud....of their dog .......of having given a rescue a home........and to spread the word that rescue is better than buying.
If you don't like it ...tough.

PositivelyPERF · 08/12/2017 20:01

This is my killer. He was starved, beaten, has an underbite, dodgy knees and arthritis. Too bloody right I tell people that he's a rescue. I don't want people to think I'm the reason for his bent nose or hump in his back. I adore the skinny bones of the wee skitter.

You don't have a "rescue", you have a fucking dog!
shhhfastasleep · 08/12/2017 20:02

lyn, with these cats you are spoiling us. Please put that photo on The Litter Tray topic. You don't need a reason.

shhhfastasleep · 08/12/2017 20:03

PERF, I'm too old and too cool to squeal with delight at that photo but ...,

Savethebadgers89 · 08/12/2017 20:03

I always mention my pets are rescues as to promote the idea of people adopting/rehoming rather then buying off breeders that contribute to overpopulation of pets, increasing the numbers of abused and neglected animals in shelters (I'd pop down to one yourself and then see how 'against' you are people promoting 'rescue' pets).

NotACleverName · 08/12/2017 20:05

Of all the things to get worked up about... Hmm

DeputyBrennan · 08/12/2017 20:08

It’s great seeing all these photos of lovely adopted dogs. We adopted our rescue, a Springer/Collie cross, four years ago. She’s a delight.

You don't have a "rescue", you have a fucking dog!

Thank you fast. 😄 I still appreciate --squeal- when he looks at me like that. He was a horror when we got him, but now he's an adorable horror. 😆

Loving all these gorgeous animal photos. ❤️

Rebeccatheold · 08/12/2017 20:13

I like the people who say ‘oh we rescued are dog’

DID YOU? No, someone else did the actual rescuing.

(Unless they actually did rescue their dog, but I have yet to meet someone for whom this is the case)
