Is this a recent phenomenon? It seems like everyone who has a dog that wasn't bought from a breeder feels the need rub their virtue in others' faces every single time they mention the darned mongrel. "My poodle Henry -he's a two year old rescue - loves cheese!" It's like veganism but with dogs. Don't they realise how sanctimonious they sound?

I second dude chill, I have a rescue (dog) but i am not bothered where people get their pups as long as it isn't a puppy farm or off gum tree do your research buy your dog and enjoy your pet.

Standard response to “he/she is a rescue dog” in our house is “where is his/her cape?”.

Well when someone asks my dogs age (happens quite often) I can't say an exact date of birth as we don't know. He's a rescue 😂

I don't have a dog but grew up with pedigrees bought from breeders and now have four cats, one was a rescue, the other three weren't and I don't feel the need to mention it.

as someone who works in rescue (cats) i love it when someone says their dog is a rescue dog and usually ask how the dog ended up in rescue, i love rescue dogs, i spit feathers when some nob head says its a pugchi or whatever stupid new crossbreed between two pedigrees is in fashion and rather than giving a rescue dog a chance of a new life they go to a backstreet breeder and pay pedigree prices for essentially a mongrel, thus encouraging the money machines who dont care about the poor dogs they breed, dont get me wrong i have nothing against proper breeders who breed to promote all that is good in their chosen breed

My current dog is a rescue. I mention it because it makes her a different kind of dog in lots of ways. And I'm really proud of how different she is after coming into our family.

We say our dogs are rescues when people ask age / breed cos we don't know so that's the explanation.

People assume dh's dog is 'a rescue'. Nope, unfortunately all her behavioural issues are our own work

As Spare says, it is a kind of shorthand. In my dog's case it is probably the reason he never plays with other dogs, won't take treats and I don't know his history or age. Also I guess I don't want someone thinking that I actually went to a puppy farm for him which as he is a cross would seem likely.

I agree OP, no need to show off about the fact that you rehomed a dog. It comes across s bit attention seeking like "look how amazing I am, I saved this creatures life!"

FWIW my last dog was from a rescue in cyprus, she was about 8n when i adopted her from cyprus, all her life she had been used as a breeding bitch which means kept in a shed bred from continously, no love, affection, puppies taken at 6 weeks old from her sold to hunters who kill them at thew end of the season, she was a mess when i got her so timid and thought i was going to hit her every time i went to stroke her, she had so many issues, but when she started to blossom she was one of the nicest dogs ive ever owned, i was proud to say she was a rescue dog

I found my dog whose potentially a pure breed in a hedge. Is he a pure bred or a rescue? He’s having a real identity crisis about it and won’t accept ‘pure bred hedgedog’as a compromise

I always find it interesting actually. Ours are 'rescues' and I mention it when people ask 'how old' or 'must have been a beautiful puppy' or a thousand other small-talk titbits.
I'm struggling to see why this would bother the OP. If you feel badly go adopt a dog but if that's not your thing then just back off and let those of us that do this enjoy it and talk about it.

It's the modern term for mongrel.
