To find a lot of Christmas songs quite depressing

Do you like Christmas songs? Every time I'm out now and they're on quite loud I feel like leaving the shop. I was thinking that 'it will be lonely this Christmas' and 'so this is Christmas' both of which I heard today are quite depressing anyway. I think a lot of them are quite depressing and I don't really like them. AIBU?

Or is it hallelujah? It might be hallelujah. Leonard Cohen did it originally, then Jeff Buckley, then some lass from the x factor.

MrsDoyleFallingOutTheWindow · 08/12/2017 17:36

Agreed that we didn't think it would be elevated to the status of Xmas Classic. In fact, I can remember me and all of my friends (aged 11) saying that it wasn't very good but we should buy it because it was for charity.

JustAnIdiot · 08/12/2017 17:38

The Leona Lewis one makes me cry like a baby Hmm Confused Blush

JustAnIdiot · 08/12/2017 17:39

I love It Came Upon The Midnight Clear, miserable words & all Grin

HulaMelody · 08/12/2017 17:41

Band Aid came on the radio today and I nearly started crying explaining to my DD why they’d made it.
Patronising pish or not, that ‘dummm dum dummm dum’ at the start gives me goosebumps. It came out when I was 3 and in hospital and it makes me think of my DM as a skint single parent trudging through the city to come visit. 😢

MrsDoyleFallingOutTheWindow · 08/12/2017 17:41

Hallelujah is a bleak song really. And it shouldn't have a key change!

DO3271 · 08/12/2017 17:41

YANBU! They suck any joy out of me every fecking year. I find Christmas depressing, ever since I started adulting. Its all about spending, stressing and trying to keep others happy. Wish Christmas was just a time to do nothing and spend £300 on yourself in the sales Grin

Anatidae · 08/12/2017 17:42

Fairytale of New York is the only decent Xmas song I can think of.
Christmas is generally a bit shit and depressing to be honest isn’t it?

woofmiaowwoof · 08/12/2017 17:43

Ha I love that pogues song - reminds me in a not sad way of childhood Christmas’s - my parents would always get drunk and shouty but it was at the level of banter.

The Coldplay 2010 otoh is the middle class equivalent, I do find that depressing!

Ariana Grande is awesome, I love that song. Also cold December night and the little mix love me like you do Christmas remix!

elQuintoConyo · 08/12/2017 17:46

I've had 6yo DS songing I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas for an hour in the car today all the way to visit a medieval town. Then he woofed Jingle Bells around the 11th century castle (it was big, so loooooots of singing). The Singing Dogs woof Jingle Bells on a Christmas CD he was given last week. Thanks Grandad Hmm

I'm abroad and don't get to hear the British Christmas Shopping Classics of Wham, Band Aid and Lennon, so i rather like them when they pop up on my playlist.

Sinead O'Conner's Silent Night is nice. Doesn't anyone play that in shops?

Skinandbones · 08/12/2017 17:47

For me it Have yourself a merry little Christmas by Judy Garland, despite the title it can have me crying buckets.

woofmiaowwoof · 08/12/2017 17:47

I hate the faux sentimentality of hallelujah, agree about band aid - and then you get into the whole Santa Claus gives presents to every child bollocks - of course we do Santa Claus but in a way it’s a terrible lie when you find out some kids will be eating maize if they’re lucky on christmas day

elQuintoConyo · 08/12/2017 17:48

I loathe Fairytale of New York Shock

No i don't smother kittens or kick puppies etc. Just hate that song!

woofmiaowwoof · 08/12/2017 17:49

I’ll be home for Christmas if only in my dreams, now that is a sad one bit isn’t remembering lost ones also an important part of Christmas? You’ve got to embrace all the emoting!

JustAnIdiot · 08/12/2017 17:49

Agree with Boney M being very cheerful - shame they were later found out to be lip-synching mud of their stuff!

I remember watching them on Top of the Pops, the women all serene & beautiful & the bloke bobbing about with skinny little legs & a big furry jacket Grin

woofmiaowwoof · 08/12/2017 17:50

elQuinto my dh tells me the lead singer of the pogues was a mc lad from Royal Tunbridge Wells - I eh not to dwell on that!

JustAnIdiot · 08/12/2017 17:50
  • much of their stuff, not mud FFS
Commuterface · 08/12/2017 17:52

Oh I forgot that I need to add Wham Last Christmas to the list now; it just makes me think of George Michael, who I adored, who is no longer with us. My mum reminded me of that when it came on in the car this morning

ParadiseLaundry · 08/12/2017 17:57

YY to hating Band Aid. All of them. What, are we on four now?

It's not Christmas until you've told Bob Geldof to fuck off.

stickygotstuck · 08/12/2017 17:59

See, I find hallelujah oddly uplifting. As I do most of Cohen in general. Not sure what that's says about me Grin.

It's NOT a Christmas song though.

My question is, why are most "classics" 30 years old or so. Has nothing remarkable and christmassy come up since?

Heather a PP said about carols not being PC made me think. Aren't they? The thought hadn't occurred to me.

stickygotstuck · 08/12/2017 18:00

*Heather PP = What a PP

woofmiaowwoof · 08/12/2017 18:13

Carols aren’t pc at dd’s school - any mention of Jesus has been frowned upon for the last n years. We have ‘carol’ services that don’t include a single carol for the last 3 years. There are lots of songs about snow which I find amusing since it almost never snows properly here!

The80sweregreat · 08/12/2017 18:19

Stop the cavalry is about WW1, ( he was on top of the pops dressed in WW1 outfit) yet mentions a nuclear bunker? I never have understood those lyrics. I am not a fan of that song. Lonely this Christmas is another sad one. Yes, some are v depressing.

zukiecat · 08/12/2017 18:20

I don't like most Christmas songs

I love the Jethro Tull Christmas Album

zukiecat · 08/12/2017 18:24

Posted too soon!

I love the Jethro Tull Christmas Album

My favourite Christmas song ever is Jethro Tull's "Jack Frost And The Hooded Crow"

It's all about how not everyone has Family round them or money to spend on gifts and fancy food

It resonates with me, and means far more to me personally than Merry Christmas or any other mainstream Christmas song
