Breakfast on Christmas Day.

Am I the only person who doesn't get this obsession with huge breakfasts on Christmas Day? Nearly everyone I speak to,or read about (yes,on MN too!) say they're having a full English or similar. I was reading an article in the Co-op supermarket magazine yesterday and saw the comment along the lines of 'make sure you have a big breakfast to keep you going and make sure you have plenty of food to give your guests and family'. And this was assuming you were eating dinner at about 2pm. I have always had Christmas dinner at about 5pm,quite late by some peoples' standards, but I know for sure that if I ate a massive breakfast at about 10am and kept eating things like mince pies, sausage rolls and canapés all day,I would not be able to do justice to my dinner? Don't get me wrong,I'm NOT bragging about having a tiny appetite and neither am I slim. I am quite greedy by nature and overweight but I do like to sit down to Christmas dinner feeling hungry and able to eat it all! Or is it just me?

I’m wondering how much people have on their full English breakfast if it keeps them full for 9 hours! I need one of them breakfasts.
I usually have a sausage, slice of bacon, grilled tomatoes, a poached egg and a slice of toast. Have that around 10ish then eat Christmas dinner at about 5.

We've never done breakfast, maybe some toast for kids inbetween looking through stockings and opening presents under the tree, usually we were to excited to eat though and it was agony waiting for mum and dad to finish there cups of tea. It's not much different now we are all 'grown up' and go to mums first thing in the morning.

We did try a full fry up a few years ago and pushed dinner back till 4 but we ended up with so much waste that year as everyone was still full from breakfast.
We just do lunch/dinner around 2 and then in the evening ham/salad platters, prawns and the rest of the chocs come out. It's the only time of year i eat the coloured popcorn, a must have for me.

I love Christmas breakfast, eggs hollandaise and a glass of fizz, few sausage rolls and mince pies and then dinner at about 6.00.

Porridge as usual here. Don't eat till about 4 and there's a lot of champagne in between.
If I had a full breakfast I wouldn't need to eat for the rest if the day

Sweetpea55 · 09/12/2017 09:45

I certainly couldn't a big lunch after a fry up. A full breakfast keeps me going all day.
We gave croissants and fresh fruit.

sweetsomethings · 09/12/2017 09:51

Would love to see the size of breakfast you are all having if a full Scottish fills you up all day. I have one slice of bacon, one sausage ,one egg and a slice of black pudding. Those saying I couldn't eat a full breakfast but I have croissants, fruit salad and scrambled eggs and half a selection box that's more food

Exactly what I’ve been thinking while reading this!

Bucks Fizz for me. Years ago it was our first Christmas together as a married couple and DILs were arriving for Xmas lunch. I’d worked the timings out to the minute, everything was prepared, the spuds parboiled and shaken to fluffy perfection, the oven switched on ready when DILs arrived. MIL, who was lovely, sniffed the air and asked if I’d cooked the turkey the night before. I looked bewildered, well pissed actually, and realised the bird was still in the fridge. I blamed DH for not noticing and he blamed me for over-indulging. It’s mentioned every Xmas when I reach for another glass.

I either just eat chocolate Blush or may make some toast with Brussels pate on the have dinner at about 3ish and that's when I eat silly amounts! Can barely face a full English anyway, let alone on Christmas with a big dinner later on!

maddiemookins16mum · 09/12/2017 10:22

Two slices of bacon and a fried egg in a bap at 10am will not keep me going until 5.30pm that's for sure. I'll be picking at pringles and peanuts by 2pm. Bucks Fizz is a waste of good Cava/Prosecco/champagne too in my humble view, I have mine neat 😊😊.

nbee84 · 09/12/2017 11:16

I only got as far as reading strokethefurrywall's post and saw Baileys french toast - guess what I'm having now on Christmas morning Grin

boloriabullet · 09/12/2017 12:27

Selection box of course! It’s the law!

ElvisIsAliveAndLivingInHull · 09/12/2017 12:58

PMSL at the amount of posters who claim their Christmas breakfast is scrambled egg with smoked salmon, bucks fizz, eggs Benedict, trout, grated coconut, quail eggs, pumpernickel, and loads of other pretentious shit that most people rarely eat! Grin

What is the obsession with people on here having smoked salmon and bucks fizz for breakfast?! There are LOADS of posters claiming they have this! Never known a soul eat this for breakfast personally......

Most people I know have a bacon buttie or weetabix, with a cup of coffee or tea.

Who the fuck wants salmon for breakfast, and why would anyone want to be drinking alcohol for breakfast?! WTF? Confused

And what the fuck is dench toast?! Confused

I have 2 weetabix and a coffee. If I ate HALF the amount of stuff for breakfast that some people on here claim they eat, I wouldn't be able to eat til Boxing day evening!

WhyamIBoredathome · 09/12/2017 13:12

Last year we were at home and had pancakes because kids needed something to keep them going until lunch at 3pm.
This year we are at the inlaws and it'll be organic cornflakes same as every other day. But I might have to eat some bread mid morning because father in law is a bit over enthusiastic about serving booze and well all be drunk by 10am otherwise.
Last time we went there he just kept topping my glass up and by the evening I just felt awful.

Ecureuil · 09/12/2017 13:18

I don’t know anyone who doesn’t have Buck’s Fizz for breakfast on Christmas Day Grin. Just shoes we’re all different!
(We sometimes have scrambled eggs and smoked salmon on a bog standard Sunday morning)

LyannaStarktheWolfMaid · 09/12/2017 13:51

I love eating salmon for breakfast.Hmm

user21 · 09/12/2017 14:09

I have 2 weetabix and a coffee

I wouldn’t have that for breakfast on a big standard Monday tbh.

user21 · 09/12/2017 14:10

Bog

DeadGood · 09/12/2017 14:31

All the people saying that they have weetabix or cornflakes on Christmas morning... so joyless!
You don’t have to eat a lot for breakfast, but what you do have should be a little bit special.

user21 · 09/12/2017 15:02

Excuse me DeadGood but it was organic cornflakes

yumyumpoppycat · 09/12/2017 15:46

Smoked salmon isn't pretentious (bit on the expensive side so a treat but still) and bucks fizz is barely alcoholic and costs about £2.99. Did anyone even mention coconut, pumpernickel or quails eggs Confused I think crumpets from asda has been the most popular thing.

Ecureuil · 09/12/2017 15:47

Even if someone did mention coconut, coconut isn’t pretentious is it?! It’s jusy... coconut.

yumyumpoppycat · 09/12/2017 15:51

True enough my 95p fruit and fibre cereal has coconut in!

HickDead · 09/12/2017 15:55

I always have scrambled eggs and smoked salmon washed down with Buck's Fizz! It's my yearly treat, although sometimes have the scrambled eggs and salmon on a Sunday morning the odd time. I really don't think it's pretentious at all, to me Christmas Day is that one day of the year that I look forward to indulging myself and others. It's like a reward to me.
