I usually don't eat much chocolate, but really enjoy nibbling demolishing the tubs of chocolates that come out at Christmas. But now they're all swimming in Palm oil Envy

Can anyone recommend a brand that does Raspberry, lime, lemon, strawberry etc creams?

YANBU.

I used to love Cadbury's... now it's revolting. And they've made creme eggs absolutely disgusting.

Not to mention the fact that palm oil appears to be one of the most evil commodities on the planet!

I don't think any of the big brand name bars you can buy now are very nice. Second the Moser Roth recommendation for cheaper chocs.

I still like Lindt, Green & Black and Montezuma. Milka is still nice, as is Bellarom from LIDL and Moser Roth from ALDI. Galaxy is still ok as well.

Wouldn't touch Cadbury or Thorntons with a bargepole now. Completely disgusting.

Oh yes and Terry's Chocolate Orange. Used to be the highlight of my Christmas. Now a whole load of NOPE. Sad

Someone please tell me Toblerone is still ok?

I’m like ILostIt and haven’t noticed any change. I mostly eat chocolate with some kind of filling though eg Maltesers, Crunchie etc which may have helped.

Divine chocolate scores highly as palm oil free - available in all Oxfam shops.

Dairy milk is just not the same. Plain dairy milk used to be my go to chocolate bar but Noy anymore. I just assumed it was either down to when I was pregnant (I can’t stand pizza now Sad) or the medication I’m on. Maybe it’s neither and it’s because they havit’s changed

I bought 3 boxes of Lindt chocolates for £10 in Asda, would rather have these then the Cadbury’s or nestle rubbish. Thornton’s has been horrible for quite a while, too sweet and icky.

I agree with Peppa. Had some Heroes the other day and they just didn't taste right.

Oh I thought it was me, chocolate tasting odd and greasy is a thing. Well thsts ok now I know I will buy something else. At least my waistline will thank me.

Definitely not just you Dominithecat, virtually all of MN (except me) seems to be the same. There have been a few threads now about chocolate tasting all oily/gross.

Like a couple of pp's I haven't noticed any change in chocolate generally, and Cadbury's particularly. I am in Ireland, does anyone know if Irish chocolate is unaffected, or do I just not have a decent palate?

I can't tell the difference to be honest however I do wish they wouldn't use palm oil! It's so bad for the planet...

ADishBestEatenCold · 07/12/2017 13:35

That they are sold in plastic tubs bothers me just as much as the use of palm oil.

Am actively trying to avoid buying things packaged in plastic, unless a) there is no alternative packaging for that product anywhere AND b) the purchase is an essential purchase.

Strangely, I often find that the versions without plastic packaging tend to be the better tasting/quality versions.

Thanks MrsHatahaway - but we're in Ireland so not all those brands are available here (we're just such a backwater!! Xmas Grin)

LIGHTHEARTED!!!! (just in case it's needed!)

I got a free hot chocolate in Waitrose the other day, a salted caramel one - it was far better than any chocolate bar that I've tasted in years.

Cadbury chocolate generally taste nasty to me these days. I ate a Wispa Gold the other day, it was awful! I was chewing on it like flavourless glue. Put it down as a one off, bought another one a couple of days later - that one was so bad I couldn’t even finish it (unheard of when it comes to me and chocolate).

Most chocolate these days remind me of a certain Friends episode - the one with the Mock-late. It’s all mostly chewy, oily disappointment Sad.

Palm oil has been added to and has ruined so many things. I now boycott it and checking ingredients means shopping takes twice as long but at least i'm not eating things tasting of oily shit and don't contribute to the destruction of rainforest habitat.

Finding edible chocolate is getting as rare as finding hens' teeth. If you are looking for a goo hot chocolate, Charbonnel is the best I've ever tried.

deadringer I think Cadbury's still makes their choc in Clondalkin to the original recipe - but changed it in the UK factory (is that still in or near Bourneville model town?).

But yes, I noticed when I bought a bar in Brussels recently, which was made in the UK, that it tasted RANK but the bag of individual squares someone bought in a local shop for work is still fine to make me break my diet give me an energy boost at 3pm...Xmas Blush

I have IS and used to be able to eat a bit of chocolate, now it causes me such bad diarrhoea that I cannot touch it.

I wondered why this was the case and reading this thread has made me realise that it is probably the soya and palm oil crap they put in it. Oh well, yet another food item I can't eat any more...

Eat Belgian chocolate, none of that rubbish!

Report
BitOutOfPractice · 07/12/2017 13:58

Oh no! Which brand of chocolates specifically? I can't be wasting money on non-chocolate that parades as real chocolate

@Dustysparrow only naked people can parade. Not chocolate. That's a well known MN "fact" Grin

BiddyPop I think YABU for buying vile British chocolate in Brussels, which is chocolate heaven (lighthearted, of course - sort of)
