The weekday mornings are hectic and I've exhausted all porridge options, forms of egg and pancakes. DH will eat bacon etc, but not the DDs. Please share any quick breakfast recipes that take no longer than 20 mins.

Weetabix are lovely honest.

BluePlasticBuddha · 07/12/2017 13:20

My oldest has food issues and a very restricted diet. Sometimes he has a simple ham sandwich for breakfast. But for the past 3 weeks he just has 2potato waffles. I shove them in the toaster frozen and they take mere minutes. If we have more time I might add egg and bacon, but generally plain is where it is at.

BarbaraofSevillle · 07/12/2017 13:25

I never eat cereal or toast on it's own. If I have that for breakfast I'm hungry before I get to work.

I'm not hungry first thing, so I usually take something like egg mayonnaise sandwiches or leftover pizza to have a bit later on.

If not going out first thing, I'll have something like an omelette, beans on toast or fake McDonalds wraps at home (quorn sausage patties, one egg omelette, a wrap and a potato waffle done in the toaster).

g1itterati · 07/12/2017 13:54

Thanks so much for all this!

What I tend to do is oat pancakes because it's quick or porridge in this weather. But they are moaning about that now!

Like the idea of the wraps and haven't done omlettes in a while for some reason.

Fruit w musli and greek yog.

Toast.

Those are the extent of my week-day morning breakfasts!

tendergreenbean · 07/12/2017 14:00

Toast and cereal is very carb heavy and not the good type of carbs either. Eggs and porridge are probably the best things you can have for breakfast, slow release fibrous carbs and protein - don't feel you have to go for something new!

We do scrambled egg bowls with different toppings each morning (ie what's in the fridge/freezer that day, usually spinach in fairness...) with a big bowl of hot porridge with ground vanilla in the winter, and cold fruity overnight oats in the winter.

DP is a personal trainer and recommends this to his clients.

@BluePlasticBuddha OMG this might be the most exciting think i've seen on MN. You can do frozen waffles in the toaster???

tendergreenbean · 07/12/2017 14:01

(P.S. Tell them to stop moaning - you're doing right by them and offering something nutritious and tasty. If they want something else they can make it themselves!)

BarbaraofSevillle · 07/12/2017 14:09

Yes, toaster waffles is a Mumsnet revelation, although I learnt about if from the instructions on the side of the Morrisons own brand version.

Two cycles on full power produces lovely crispy waffles in a fraction of the time they would take in the oven or under the grill.

BarbaraofSevillle · 07/12/2017 14:10

Just don't forget to put the toaster back down to the normal toast setting because if someone else comes along to make toast from the last 2 slices of bread and ends up with charcoal, this may cause a row.

DeadGood · 07/12/2017 14:14

Not sure what you mean by “you’ve exhausted all porridge options”.

I’m firmly of the belief that weekday/school day/work day breakfasts should be porridge. Monday to Friday, every week of the year.

It’s extremely good for you.
It’s very very cheap.
It’s easy.
It’s filling.
And it is fairly bland, which is what I (personally) prefer at that time of day. I’m not actually hungry at breakfast, it’s just a means to an end.

So yes when I hear this question I just think “why complicate things - honestly, just have porridge.”

BarbaraofSevillle · 07/12/2017 14:24

Porridge doesn't work for me. Leaves me with knawing hunger an hour later, despite all the 'it keeps you full until lunch' claims Confused.

PuppyMonkey · 07/12/2017 14:34

I just think "honestly why complicate things just have Weetabix." Grin

StinkPickle · 07/12/2017 14:36

I eat Huel (human fuel) you can google it. It’s a meal replacement but not a diet food. It’s a shake but not low cal it contains every nutrient your body needs in the exact right quantity. I love it because I’m lazy. Have it for lunch too and then normal snacks, evening meals, takeaways whatever.

g1itterati · 07/12/2017 15:01

Mine have had porridge for years. I even put Nutella on it if necessary.

The oat pancakes are basically porridge plus and egg. Per person it's 100g oats, 100ml milk, 1 egg, 1 tsp baking powder, vanilla essence, cinnamon and 1 tsp oil. Blitz it and then you get pancakes that keep them going, even if they don't like school lunch!

I know Weetabix doesn't have all the sugar and salt of most other cereals, it's just I worry it's too much wheat because there's so much in bread as it is.

Eggs bread 😍

ItWentInMyEye · 07/12/2017 15:09

HmmI meant eggy

kateandme · 07/12/2017 15:15

little bacon and egg baskets.muffin tin, shape bread into it.lay bacon slices or ham.add either beans or egg or both.cook.mmmmmmmm
you could do this without the bread and just do bacon bakets
you can make savoury scones and freeze
muffin pan omelette you could also freeze and then just get out as and when.easier?
and frittata.so you could have some batch read to bring out freezer
toasties
cereal.cereal cereal.
branflake muffins.
yoghurt muffins.
smoked salmon cream cheese on toast
blueberrys and strawberrys in pan.cook a little then wirl through some crème fraiche or yoghurt.serve on brioche or toast.or if you have time egg bread.

BarbaraofSevillle · 07/12/2017 15:26

Ooh the mention of eggy bread has reminded me of one of my all time favourites, that I haven't had for ages, which is a cheese and ham sandwich, dipped in beaten egg and fried. Yum.

g1itterati · 07/12/2017 16:23

Sounds amazing kateandme. Never thought of the basket idea. Do they not go soggy?

I do sometimes do fat-free banana muffins with non-fat Greek yogurt instead of butter and no sugar needed because if all the banana.

chapthedoor · 07/12/2017 16:28

What about overnight oats ? Mix porridge and yoghurt the night before and leave in fridge then serve with chopped fruit. Very filling. I'd be starving if I just had fruit and yoghurt. I have this in summer, warm porridge in winter.

BluePlasticBuddha · 07/12/2017 20:56

Yes the toaster produces brilliant potato waffles! You usually need 2 cycles though as Barbara says. They are crispy on the outside, and fluffy within. Perfect!

Ragwort · 07/12/2017 21:04

Do people really worry this much about breakfast? Hmm

Surely 90% of the population are happy with cereal and/or toast.

If I am trying to be healthy I will eat greek yogurt and fruit, most days I have croissant or English muffins/crumpets.

Seniorcitizen1 · 07/12/2017 21:04

When me my brother and sister went to school in the 1960s my mam cooked us all bacon and egg sometimes saugage. Didn't take her long - but them in those days children were alot more organised - we could each wash and dress ourselves at 5 and there was no messing about at the table.

formerbabe · 07/12/2017 21:07

I give my DC breakfast...they like toast, croissants, bagels with fruit or yoghurt.

I pay no attention to what my oh has for breakfast. Weekday mornings are not the time to sit and eat together IMO!
