To wonder why MN is so left wing/liberal?

MN hates Brexit, the tories, pink toys, violent video games... you get the idea. But in real life most women don't mind buying gender specific toys/clothes and the election/brexit female vote was about 50/50. So what makes this place 90% lefty/lib when general society is either split or completely reversed? Confused

Who cares? Let people be vile as they like, I say.

Just stick to the subject, ask them [without stooping to their level] for and about specifics and for evidence and they'll soon sod off. Such has been my experience.

Missymoo100 · 08/12/2017 13:25

I agree, we need to get back to be able to having reasoned debate without name calling and mud slinging.

Missymoo100 · 08/12/2017 13:29

Yes facts and evidence cannot take a back seat to emotions.

BertrandRussell · 08/12/2017 13:31

"I agree, we need to get back to be able to having reasoned debate without name calling and mud slinging"
I agree. But I also think that people have to accept that unsubstantiated claims-from whatever position-will be, and should be, challenged.

Crackednips · 08/12/2017 13:54

Yes I too agree...

Flipping 'eck we're in serious danger of all being in agreement? This won't do...I know --- have to accept that's a bit bloody dictatorial of you isn't it?

'S more like it

QuiQuaiQuod · 08/12/2017 13:56

I keep thinking that too! OP Totally agree with you.

and mn hate the daily mail yet doesnt comment on left wing papers like the evening standard and the Mirror etc.

ZaraW · 08/12/2017 13:59

The DM is vile it's misogynist, anti immigrant and spreads hatred please tell me what's to like about it? I wouldn't call the LES left wing especially considering the newish editor.

QuiQuaiQuod · 08/12/2017 13:59

oh and must NEVER use word immigration/Brexit/Benefits /actual proper genders, as then theyre accused of everything under the sun. Wink

yes, discussions, can agree to disagree, but then threads get the one that starts the goading/downright nastiness.

surferjet · 08/12/2017 14:02

Yet a large part of MN are very anti Trans.
So maybe not as liberal as they think they are?

It's a weird one - people who generally have a left wing outlook but are virulently transphobic. I find Irish feminists do a way better job of being intersectional.

LiveLifeWithPassion · 08/12/2017 14:07

A large part of mn is not anti trans, just pro women rights but that’s another discussion.

The DM is vile and has helped to encourage the divisions in society.

Crackednips · 08/12/2017 14:23

Can you accept that this adds up the same thing for those with a different political outlook?

derxa · 08/12/2017 14:26

A large part of mn is not anti trans, just pro women rights Have you done a survey?

LiveLifeWithPassion · 08/12/2017 14:32

No I’ve not done a survey but I’ve read through loads of the trans threads and I’ve not seen anyone say anything against the trans community. It’s more about how certain issues affect women.
If there are lots on anti trans people, I’ll stand corrected. I’m open minded enough to listen to all view points and willing to learn.

ZaraW · 08/12/2017 14:34

derxa I manage quite well thanks.

Crackednips · 08/12/2017 15:00

Its weird that people who generally have a left wing outlook but are virulently transphobic.

Must being left wing [ie, advocating for higher taxation & spending, state control - less market freedom, stronger trade unions etc] mean that you also must never view transgenderism as a mental disorder?

I personally know a couple of people who'd describe themselves as socialists in the George Orwell tradition, that very much see it that way. I also have and staunch Thatcherite cousin who most certainly doesn't.

In your shouty post upthread, you're keen to make the point that having a tertiary education is highly correlated with having socially liberal views, ergo, we should accept that conservatives are less smart than liberals.

I don't know anyone under the age of 60, right wing or otherwise, who has socially illiberal views - what does that mean in 2017?

Does it mean you're fine with pre-martial sex? gay marriage? that you accept a woman's right to contraception and abortion? That you accept children should learn evolution in schools?

Crackednips · 08/12/2017 15:08

who are you addressing?

Crackednips · 08/12/2017 15:09

Oops sorry --- my mistake

Anatidae · 08/12/2017 17:01

The problem with the trans thing is like the religion thing I talked about above. It’s fine until it starts impinging on other peoples rights. It’s lumped in with LGB rights when it’s not the same thing at all - gay marriage for example doesn’t affect a straight couples marriage at all - it is simply evening the playing field with no negative impacts on the rest of society.
If men are allowed to be classed as women then the entire legal basis for sex discrimination legislation is gone. That means it would have a massive negative effect on half the population.

To me it’s akin to codifying something like blasphemy in law - it’s pandering to the wants of one group and standing on the rights of another.

I don’t think mn as a whole really cares about trans people in bathrooms, but they do care quite a lot about losing the protected class status that sex gives. And quite rightly too.

BertrandRussell · 08/12/2017 17:08

"don't know anyone under the age of 60, right wing or otherwise, who has socially illiberal views - what does that mean in 2017?"

Really? May I introduce you to William Rees-Mogg, Boris Johnston, Nicky Morgan.......

specialsubject · 08/12/2017 18:38

Nadine dorres, all the pro suffering and anti choice campaigners...

Missymoo100 · 08/12/2017 19:16
