Shamelessly posting for traffic (sorry!!)

Going for lunch in London next week with a friend, and they'd like to go to an Indian restaurant.

AIBU to ask if anyone knows of any nice and reasonable-ish Indian restaurants around central London please? The only one I've heard of is Gymkhana, and I'm fairly sure that's out of my budget 😂

Thanks so much everyone!

Salt n Pepper on Orange St is great

RavingRoo · 06/12/2017 11:21

Dishoom and Chutney Mary are okay if you and your friends aren’t Indian. Benares and Tamarind have Michelin stars I think and food quality is good. Bhel house near Kings Cross is okay. To be fair Indian food in Central London is nothing to write home about (the best restaurants are in North London). You will should find better Turkish / Middle Eastern restaurants though.

South Indian rather than trad curry but Ragam’s and Diwana Bhel Poori near Euston are great and cheap. If you can handle drab/grotty decor then the Raavi Halal Tandoori also near Euston does amazing food.

ReggaetonLente · 06/12/2017 11:29

Gymkhana and Dishoom are probably the best I agree. Gaylord on Mortimer Street is fab too.

Rebeccaslicker · 06/12/2017 11:35

Just as a wild card - sagar is superb and cheap as chips. There's one in Covent Garden. it's vegetarian and mostly dosas so it's not your standard Indian - but I mention it because it's absolutely fab and you can stuff yourself silly for about a tenner each, so it might be useful to someone!

Otherwise second dishoom which is lush.

Then there's the two really famous ones - needo and tayaab, but you'd need to go out to Whitechapel for those. You'd soon see why they are so famous! Smile

Masala Zone in Covent Garden.... think there's some other locations as well :)

Scribblegirl · 06/12/2017 11:37

Tayyabs is a classic but I hear it's gone downhill lately? Shame if true as I loved that place. Cinnamon Kitchen is great but also expensive.

ArgeninianOrangeTango · 06/12/2017 11:38

Dishoom & Gymkhana.

Rebeccaslicker · 06/12/2017 11:41

I know Mohammed Tayyab, he is the nicest man you'd ever meet.

I don't think it's quite fair that it's gone as far as downhill - but sadly it IS true to say that needo has the edge on tayyabs these days.

Another vote for Masala Zone in Covent Garden.
We've tried to get into Dishoom twice - told each time the queue was 45 - 60 minutes! So we didn't bother (went to Masala Zone once and the Ivy Grill the other time - no queues at either!

squashyhat · 06/12/2017 11:44

Cinnamon Club in the old Westminster library.

I love the vegetarian Indian cafes along Drummond Street round the back of Euston Station. Very cheap and so delicious. But all veggie.

Tamarind of Mayfair have a really good looking festive lunch menu at a set price. I've eaten there and it was delicious.

Cafe Spice Namaste, on the east side of the city (walking distance from tower hill station) is amazing. It is one of Cyrus Todiwala's restaurants (may have seen him on TV). We first went years ago before he got more known, but have gone again recently and is still excellent. And not too expensive either!

From a Times article about extreme food bloggers:

"It’s not all about the big-name places. There’s a delight, and perhaps more of a delight, in sharing tales of the unexpected. Thanks to Hayler, I now know that one of the best Indian meals in London is to be found in the Holiday Inn at King’s Cross. "

Placemarking!

PamplemousseRouge · 06/12/2017 13:04

Thanks so much everyone :)

I'm mainly looking for somewhere fairly central that's reasonably priced and that hopefully I can book beforehand.

I'm going with an American friend who thinks I know London better than I do 😂 I don't think I've ever gone out for an Indian meal in London!

From what others have recommended I've been to two - Cinnamon Club was lovely but check menu first as it's expensive and might not be what you're expecting (food is quite modern / 'innovative'). Hoppers- again this is lovely but you can't book just have to turn up (and queue usually) - also this is a Sri Lankan restaurant rather than Indian.

LockedOutOfMN · 07/12/2017 01:59

Dishoom is great. On Kingly Street.

LockedOutOfMN · 07/12/2017 02:01

Just seen others mention the Cinnamon Club which is really nice...but not in Soho.

MrsZombieMum · 07/12/2017 02:39

The Cinammon Club in westminster, posh & pricey but so worth it.
Its is westminsters old library. x

MrsZombieMum · 07/12/2017 02:40

BTW< the cinammon club do a sunday lunch time deal, for £40 i think...
it was worth every penny

Pannacott · 07/12/2017 04:04

Masala zone is a wagamamas type Indian food place. Much cheaper than other places mentioned and still pretty good. They do good thalis.

If you want something a bit medium swish and trendy, but not Gymkhana pricing, check out Kricket in Soho. Very on trend and exceptionally tasty food.

Chelsea26 · 07/12/2017 04:15

A new one that hasn’t been mentioned I’d www.darjeeling-express.com/about-us/ - it’s kitchen is run by Indian housewives not trained chefs and the food is lovely! Also it’s on kingly court which is really nice and you could go to cahoots after cahoots-london.com/ it’s loads of fun in there and i think Americans would love it

Sherwil16 · 07/12/2017 07:18

Masala Zone in Floral Street, Covent Garden has really interesting Indian snacks and main meals. You can pay about £20 without drinks.
