Shamelessly posting for traffic (sorry!!)

Going for lunch in London next week with a friend, and they'd like to go to an Indian restaurant.

AIBU to ask if anyone knows of any nice and reasonable-ish Indian restaurants around central London please? The only one I've heard of is Gymkhana, and I'm fairly sure that's out of my budget 😂

Thanks so much everyone!

Another vote for dishoom. The one in Kings Cross tends to be quieter than the one in Covent Garden.

You can book Dishoom before 6pm

Yes to the Continental. Like time travel.

Nobody has mentioned Hotel Continental on the Strand www.strand-continental.co.uk/Restaurant_%26_Bar.html Which is basic but like stepping back into the 1950s (with prices to match!) and the food is lovely.

The Lahore off brick lane is very good, a famous restaurant but normal prices. You need to bring your own wine though, they don't serve it.

Masala Zone in Floral Street, Covent Garden has really interesting Indian snacks and main meals. You can pay about £20 without drinks.

A new one that hasn’t been mentioned I’d www.darjeeling-express.com/about-us/ - it’s kitchen is run by Indian housewives not trained chefs and the food is lovely! Also it’s on kingly court which is really nice and you could go to cahoots after cahoots-london.com/ it’s loads of fun in there and i think Americans would love it

Masala zone is a wagamamas type Indian food place. Much cheaper than other places mentioned and still pretty good. They do good thalis.

If you want something a bit medium swish and trendy, but not Gymkhana pricing, check out Kricket in Soho. Very on trend and exceptionally tasty food.

Just seen others mention the Cinnamon Club which is really nice...but not in Soho.

Dishoom is great. On Kingly Street.

From what others have recommended I've been to two - Cinnamon Club was lovely but check menu first as it's expensive and might not be what you're expecting (food is quite modern / 'innovative'). Hoppers- again this is lovely but you can't book just have to turn up (and queue usually) - also this is a Sri Lankan restaurant rather than Indian.

Thanks so much everyone :)

I'm mainly looking for somewhere fairly central that's reasonably priced and that hopefully I can book beforehand.

I'm going with an American friend who thinks I know London better than I do 😂 I don't think I've ever gone out for an Indian meal in London!

From a Times article about extreme food bloggers:

"It’s not all about the big-name places. There’s a delight, and perhaps more of a delight, in sharing tales of the unexpected. Thanks to Hayler, I now know that one of the best Indian meals in London is to be found in the Holiday Inn at King’s Cross. "

Cafe Spice Namaste, on the east side of the city (walking distance from tower hill station) is amazing. It is one of Cyrus Todiwala's restaurants (may have seen him on TV). We first went years ago before he got more known, but have gone again recently and is still excellent. And not too expensive either!

Tamarind of Mayfair have a really good looking festive lunch menu at a set price. I've eaten there and it was delicious.
