To think this is really inconvenient ?

So national grid are replacing the gas pipes on my street and in my home.. ( why don't people just stick to the saying if it's not broken don't fix it!) so today is 'my appointment' for them to come and disconnect my gas to do this. So I had to allow them in at 8am this morning ( I told them to come back at 9 as I said I had breakfast and kids to get off at school) so they came and disconnected it and now I have to wait all evening between 4pm-8pm for them to restore my gas supply. So they could come at any point whilst I'm cooking and I will have to cook tea ( gas cupboard is in my kitchen next to my cooker in a cupboard!)
So now my kids will have to eat their tea whilst having strangers come in and out of the house. It's annoyed me! And we have had no hot water all day!
Am I being unreasonable to think this is inconvenient and unacceptable ?

I've had all this done recently, had to have a gas meter put outside also. Also had to rush around for work as they needed to be in blah blah.

But guess what? Shit happens get over it 😂

Heard of around takeaway?

OhNoOhNo · 04/12/2017 19:50

But well ye should just stop moaning shouldn't I

Yes, OP.

This is not a tragedy. A tragedy is three men trapped in a mine, or police dogs used in Birmingham. Monks burning themselves in protest.

Spartaca · 04/12/2017 19:51

What is the alternative? I get it is inconvenient, but they are only being unreasonable if there is a feasible alternative that they have ignored...so what is it?

ArcheryAnnie · 04/12/2017 19:51

Why is a takeaway unacceptable, OP, if you are so dead set against cooking tea in the proximity of workmen?

And what's wrong with just making them a sandwich instead?

darkcloudlooming · 04/12/2017 19:51

So no one has been. I rang the helpline to see if anyone is definitely coming and she said the engineer won't be coming tonight now as he's busy somewhere else.. I told her why was we not Informed instead of making us wait in all after noon. She said she only just found out. So asked if I wanted her to try and locate a different engineer to come out later tonight but not sure what time and it would be very late so looks like we will have to spend all evening in a freezing cold house ( and yes my house is freezing in the evening because it's an old house) and have no hot water.. great! Like I said I understand they have to do the work.. I get that.. but there is no structure to what they do and they have obviously took more work than they can handle

Well if your dh is off why isn’t he picking up some of the slack?

pictish · 04/12/2017 19:52

What's the big deal with having someone in your house at 9.30 anyway? It's one night out of your life. They're not expecting you to stand on ceremony or provide a hot meal. Get on with it.

darkcloudlooming · 04/12/2017 19:53

@Cockmagic not everyone has money for takeaways, we certainty don't... and not everyone enjoys eating takeaways either

RedastheRose · 04/12/2017 19:53

Blimey people are getting precious these days! If you hadn't told them to go away at 8 this morning and had been nice and made them a cup of tea they'd probably have sorted yours out ASAP as you have small children to cook for. Sometimes being nice pays!!

MsWanaBanana · 04/12/2017 19:54

Get a grip op it's one night. Wrap up in extra layers and hot water bottles for the night. Look at what's going on in the world. One night inconvenience s hardly the end of the world. You just sound like a spoiled ungrateful brat

lunar1 · 04/12/2017 19:54

They probably just don't want to come back and listen to you again!

Theresnonamesleft · 04/12/2017 19:56

Here’s a thought. The engineer is possibly delayed because everyone else also sent them away. Creating a backlog.
Or there’s an emergency elsewhere

maddiemookins16mum · 04/12/2017 19:57

OhNo.......a Dirty Dancing fan I see. 😊😊😊

OhNoOhNo · 04/12/2017 19:59

maddie yes, I wore out the VHS in the 90s ☺️

darkcloudlooming · 04/12/2017 20:00

@MsWanaBanana it's not just one night is it? I will have to stay in all day tomorrow and evening tomorrow as well now won't I... but hey I'm not allowed to complain am I!

OP posts:
Theresnonamesleft · 04/12/2017 20:01

well tomorrow to save the issue of a strange man in the kitchen watching you cook.
Use a slow cooker.
Make a stew.
Make a casserole.

Really easy to avoid slaving over the stove being watched.

happypoobum · 04/12/2017 20:01

I just can't imagine why the engineer refused to come back and has mucked you about like this........................Grin

Theresnonamesleft · 04/12/2017 20:01

But you didn’t know you would have to stay in tomorrow when you started moaning.

HandbagCrazy · 04/12/2017 20:03

What is the point of your post op?
You asked if being annoyed by this was unreasonable - almost everyone else has said YWBU and to essentially stop moaning about a company doing an essential job that keeps you safe. And yet you keep coming back to argue.

For what it's worth, I think YBU. Your family seeing a workman is hardly the end of the world. It also wouldn't bother me if I had to switch off the cooker for a bit mid-meal, or to layer up and be cold for 1 night (have actually had no hot water or heating for 4 days December 2015 when our boiler broke).

Roussette · 04/12/2017 20:03

My electricity was off for 36 hours once (no gas here). We coped.

So will you OP.

Nyx1 · 04/12/2017 20:04

OP "Like I said I understand they have to do the work."

not at all what you said in your OP.

pudcat · 04/12/2017 20:04

If you hadn't made them an hour late in starting their work, they probably would have had it all sorted tonight.

Esspee · 04/12/2017 20:05

I have a neighbour who recently had beautiful double glazing installed in his whole house in one day by the council. They did a superb job, covered all the furniture and carpets with dust sheets and cleaned up after themselves. He reckons he should be due compensation for his wasted day. (He has never worked a day in his life since I have known him).
My point is OP that some people are so ungrateful. It was one day of minor (very minor) inconvenience for you and your family. Suck it up!

minmooch · 04/12/2017 20:06

Another one saying get a grip op. It's a pain but that's it. Nothing more nothing less. You are makin this a huge deal.

You could turn it into a fun thing for the kids - picnic in the living room, loads of blankets, hot chocolate. It won't hurt the kids not to have a bath for one or even two days!
