Me and dh were talking today and were saying what we would do if we won the lottery buy a new house holidays ect.

Now, that's a pretty normal conversation to have I know. But it's stuck in my head all day and I have literally now written a list of what I will do when I win the lottery Hmm feel a bit crazy now ìve written it out like it actually happened

Has anyone else ever done this as seriously as me? What would you do if you won?

Oh I love these threads !

I have found my dream house, only issue is it's for rent, not sale. Figured if I'd won £70+m I could put in an offer to the letting agent to pass on that was way over it's market value. (It's a big old Victorian place that's got a decent sized garden, is on a side road walks distance to our dcs school, walking distance to our town).

When I hatched this plan on Sunday night, i allocated which rooms would be best for which dc, thought about what colours id paint the walls (all rental property magnolia currently), and I may have gone as far as have a little look on the John Lewis website to see if they still sell the sofa I saw in the summer that would look just darling opposite the fireplace... I know what I'd do without keeping it written down haha.

  • pay off mortgage
  • buy new house to live in outright, rent out this home and buy two or three other buy to let future properties.
  • pay off cars.
  • put money in to a trust for both kids.
  • give both parents the same amount of money and give all siblings a set amount.
  • divide what is left by 60 years and live off that and our rental income.
  • use the rest of our time to volunteer and help others.

How much are we talking? Buy a house in the suburb we want to live in in Australia near family. Rent somewhere nice in the uk where we are. Buy a beach home. Consult for hours with my mum on how to share with family. Get my mum a driver arrangement so she can go places on her own. Invest enough to cover the school fees for my children. Donate to charity - food banks, refugees, youth programs, save the children type programs abroad. Preferably standing donations so they can build them into their budget and plan things more easily.

Yes - I actually find it more interesting to consider how I would spend (relatively!) small wins - with the big EuroMillions type jackpots, there's no real challenge as you could just buy anything you want. I like to imagine how I'd carefully spend between 1 and 2 million. It's years since I last bought a lottery ticket though, so it's not gonna be me!

Our small win would be much the same (pay off mortgage and buy a new house while renting our old one out; buy a buy to let; pay off cars; and money for children). The only difference would be that our siblings and parents would recieve less ans we'd both go part time using the rental income to top off. We'd then use the rest of the money for indulgences and charity donations.
