To think nobody is as lazy and pointless as me?

I work 4 days a week in a "mobile worker" job where I basically have a list of jobs and 7.5 hours to do them in. I start work at 8am and then come home for lunch where I spend around 2 hours just lounging on the sofa. I then go back to work until 4.30pm then get home and spend all night lounging on the sofa. I've stopped wearing my Fitbit as it was barely logging 4000 steps a day and was a constant reminder of how shit I am.

I am a member of an excellent gym in which I've not been to for over a month. It's 5 minutes away from my house. I really have no excuse, I even enjoy the classes but simply can't be arsed to go.

I have a dog who I don't walk. He hates going out in the cold and really protests and that is all the excuse I need not to bother.

This weekend I've done fuck all, literally. Friday I got up at 8am and lounges on the sofa until 11am until my mum got here. I then dragged myself out for lunch with her, took her home, got back and then lounged on the sofa all evening/night.

Saturday I got up at 9am, played on computer games and lounged on the sofa. I didn't even get dressed. Today I got up at 9.30 and have done absolutely nothing all day.

I honestly can't think of anyone as pointless and ridiculous as I am but I can't seem to snap myself out of it. AIBU to think I'm an absolute fucking joke?

The thing is energy breads energy so the more you do the more you will feel like doing. There would be nothing wrong with your lifestyle if it made you feel happy. But it clearly isn’t so something needs to change.

Could you pop into a volunteer centre? Even just as a one off lend a hand doing something and see if that gives you a bit of purpose.

You probably also need some fresh air. What is your diet like? Could you be deficient in something?

timshortfforthalia · 03/12/2017 16:36

Google adult adhd. I have extraordinary lethargy and its linked to this.

ilovepixie · 03/12/2017 16:38

What's your job? I'd love a job where I had loads of free time?

MPichu · 03/12/2017 16:40

I have pretty much all of the symptoms of ADHD and did as a child. I was always in trouble from minor stuff (like wiping beans on the carpet) to setting fire to a school portacabin.

I find it hard to function to be honest, I've never held a job for more than a year and I'm 36. The reason my current job is working out is because I'm left to my own devices. I have a million and one ideas, so many that it tires me out and strips me of the energy to actually execute any of them.

I was going to suggest SAD as you seemed to be more active earlier in the year but hearing about all the ideas does seem more like ADHD.

PersianCatLady · 03/12/2017 16:51

Tim
Do you take medication for your ADHD?

It does really help with the lethargy.

MPichu · 03/12/2017 16:56

I've been to GP a number of times, all they ever want to do is diagnose me with depression

OP posts:
BendydickCuminsnatch · 03/12/2017 16:58

Go for a walk (without the dog, don't use him as an excuse to stay in!!). Right now! Get off MN! Go! See you in half an hour when you come back. Then you'll have something you've done today.

ChinwagCharlieBear · 03/12/2017 16:58

If you think you may be depressed I would urge you to book an (emergency?) appointment with your GP.

Please walk your dog! My 6 month old puppy dislikes the rain but he still gets walked several times a day and he is fine after a few minutes. They need exercise and stimulation. It will be good for you too. Could you take a favourite treat to encourage them to walk?

He's a really weird dog, won't eat treats outside of the house, won't go out if it's wet or cold and he is ridiculously stubborn. Honestly the last time I took him I had to pull him the entire way.

Why don't you make a pact to do something together to get you both out and about?

Katedotness1963 · 03/12/2017 17:06

Sounds like my life without a job. I cannot remember the last time I spoke to someone other than my husband and kids. I left my house once last month. I can't be bothered with anything and I don't think I even care any more. Life seems completely pointless.

Findingdotty · 03/12/2017 17:09

I could have written this today. I was/am feeling exactly the same. What is the point and why all the hassle. I seem to get nowhere and work really hard but make no in roads in to anything. Any house problems we try and sort like damp just cost more money and open up more problems we can't afford and it just all seems a bit pointless. Then I just give up and sit on the sofa for hours as I can't see the point of getting up.
However when I do get up and do something - just one thing to start with, I do then feel so much better and it often (not always) inspires me to do something else.
I echo all the PPs who say start with one thing or goal. Just one. It will lead to two, etc.

I don't own a dog but I would start with the dog walks. Does a dog get cold? Perhaps get the dog a dog coat and get in the car or on the bus and go somewhere better for a walk, somewhere the dog might like more? He/she might be less reluctant then. Don't aim for any more than one walk a day to start. Then after a week add in one more thing.
Hope you manage to break the cycle for yourself. Only you can do it....but you CAN do it.

FluffyFerrets · 03/12/2017 17:22

Frig the dog! Could you stick some headphones in and do a 20 min walk yourself each day. I struggle to exercise and get some decent fresh air at the moment because of shifts/unsociable hours at work. DP works them too so on the rare occasion we have time off together we tend to stay close to the sofa bed It can be all sorts of fun but not actually too healthy.
I'm an all or nothing type of person so I often feel crap at not pushing myself harder and actively doing more but then other times it makes me feel better that I'm doing something....if that makes sense? Sometimes as hard as it seems, you have to push/force yourself.
Good luck x

Flumplet · 03/12/2017 17:23

I’m extremely lazy and pointless OP!! My achievements today have been putting a load of washing in the machine and putting the Asda delivery away. Fancy a buddy system? We can do some small changes together?

MPichu · 03/12/2017 17:26

Thanks everyone for the kind comments and advise. I'm sorry to hear there are others out there feeling the same.

I'm at work tomorrow but I've booked onto an evening class at the gym. I'll just focus on tomorrow and maybe Tuesday I'll feel like booking another one and so on. The stupid thing is I feel amazing when I've been to the gym, my mood goes through the roof and my energy levels sour so why am I punishing myself by not going??

I've also decided to take the dog out next Saturday afternoon to his favourite place. It's an old national heritage site that is often deserted in winter. It's an hour away though so he better bleeding walk 😂

Big regret getting this type of dog. Love him to bits but wish I'd stuck to my guns and got a German shepherd.

Flumpet, that sounds just like me, I see it as an achievement if I get a wash load done! I'm up for a buddy system x

ColonelJackONeil · 03/12/2017 17:29

Is your dog a whippet? Apparently they like to spend most of the winter snoozing under a pile of blankets.

MPichu · 03/12/2017 17:31

No he's s French bulldog. His hobbies include sleeping, pissing all over the house (he does get let into the garden regularly but prefers the kitchen floor), sleeping, destroying everything in sight, sleeping and making weird noises. He occasionally eats in between depending on his mood.

OP posts:
PersianCatLady · 03/12/2017 17:36

I don't think it is fair on the dog to only walk him once a week. I don't know what others think but I don't think it is enough.

ColonelJackONeil · 03/12/2017 17:55

People get these toy breeds because they don't need much walking so he may well dislike long walks in the cold. My Mums little Pomeranian doesn't like to walk on wet grass! Having said that a walk will do him good, I would try to do a short walk at lunchtime every day as you say you are home, and get him used to it. If he won't take treats outside he may be nervous. Just start off with short little walks so he gets used to it.

Flumplet · 03/12/2017 17:57

My achievement for this week will be catching up with the washing up x

Lloyd45 · 03/12/2017 18:24

Oh this thread has definitely motivated me 😊 I think it's the time of year. I sit on the sofa and think of all the things I should be doing and then find it overwhelming. I am now going to write a list for the new year of what I want to achieve, if I can muster just cleaning out my wardrobe would be an achievement
