To be unhappy about this transgender loose application of science?

Now don't get me wrong, I am 100% on board with the idea of gender and sex being different things and that gender is primarily a social construct as its per formative not characteristic.

HOWEVER, I have recently undergone a Diversity training course in work where we were informed that "there are more than two sexes" and that people are often born as "a woman in a mans body" and vice versa and that there are numerous different variations. I get that can be true from a gender role perspective, but when this point was raised we were told no, its a biological reality as well. Apparently this is due to extra XX and XY chromosomes being present in some people in configurations such as XXY, XXX etc.

Now my issue here is that configuration of chromosomes is only a characteristic of sex in mammals (and not even all mammals at that). It seems we are redefining an entire classification system used in a huge area of natural science on the basis of what exactly?

If it was really true that there are "more than two sexes", surely this is something that biologist would have identified years ago?

What makes you know you are a woman?

Probably her biology.

ferntwist · 01/12/2017 18:54

YANBU. Outrageous that this anti-science nonsense is being peddled and paid for by the public sector.
Can you discreetly complain?

PleaseDontGoadTheToad · 01/12/2017 18:54

Interesting NN btw.

ferntwist · 01/12/2017 18:55

Rare syndromes like XXX or XXY don’t mean there are more than two sexes! A Y chromosome = a male.

CorrectingBigots · 01/12/2017 18:56

PleaseDontGoadTheToad
So it turned out they had Swyer syndrome they would declare themselves no longer a woman. Biology is not a feeling, what make you feel you are a women, would say trans women cannot feel like a woman but what is it that make you feel you are a woman?

Barnaclesbrother · 01/12/2017 18:56

I don’t know what makes any trans person know. But as Martha said there is still so much we don’t know about what makes us all who we are, that I’m prepared to believe it can be genuine. Let’s be honest it can’t be an easy life.
FWIW I’m also prepared to believe I’m wrong!!!

sagamartha · 01/12/2017 18:56

A Y chromosome = a male

Do you think that epigenetics, hormone exposure in the womb etc can affect the way the brain develops and make differences in the brain?

ferntwist · 01/12/2017 18:57

Also XXY Kleinfelters syndrome definitely does not make sex ambiguous. Carriers are male with a penis, but infertile. I studied it and my friend’s husband has it. They only found out after ttc.

PleaseDontGoadTheToad · 01/12/2017 18:58

I don't feel like a woman. I know I'm a woman because that's what my biology tells me I am.

Swyer syndrome is an intersex disorder and has nothing to do with being trans.

sagamartha · 01/12/2017 18:59

I know I'm a woman because that's what my biology tells me I am

Do you think that something biological could be going on with trans people that affects them?

CorrectingBigots · 01/12/2017 19:00

But biology says they are male but they seem female. I am guessing they feel like a woman but what does a woman feel like can you put to words why you feel like a woman not just say biology have you even got a chromosone test to confirm you are XX

Uokbing · 01/12/2017 19:02

What makes you know you are a woman?

I have a vagina and breasts, I have periods, I have carried and given birth to children, I am quite a lot smaller than the average person, and probably quite a lot weaker as well. My voice is a higher pitch than a man's. Given all the above it's safe to assume that I gave xx chromosomes, which are defined as female.

Because of all the above, I have been treated differently by society to my male counterparts in many ways.

Obviously not all these things apply to every woman (eg, not all women have periods, or can give birth) but all females have at least some of these characteristics in common. If it looks like a duck etc....

Ferntwist

I will look into a way to raise my concern anonymously on Monday, the problem is some of us argued in the presentation and basically got gaslighted. It was implied that to question this was transphobic and against the 'values of the organisation' and the only reason we would question this kind of thing is if we are bigots. That's the kind of language that gets people on written warnings or worse. Nobody wants to be labelled as the 'anti trans' person/bigot in work but I wasn't the only one in the room that recognised that a lot of what we were being told was bollocks.

The chromosomes certainly do say XX or XY. Is there any other biology going on that we don't yet know about that also plays a role in 'sex'?

CorrectingBigots · 01/12/2017 19:04

Swyer syndrome have those but are XY so are biologically male, they feel like woman raised like woman but you are saying they don't know what feeling like a woman is and they where wrong and should now be men and use the mens restroom?

AssassinatedBeauty · 01/12/2017 19:05

Anyone who has ever been pregnant knows without a doubt that their chromosomes are XX.

PleaseDontGoadTheToad · 01/12/2017 19:07

Why would I get a chromosome test? I have a vagina and breasts. I have periods and have being pregnant and have given birth so I know for a fact my chromosomes will be XX.

Uokbing · 01/12/2017 19:07

Womanhood is not a 'feeling'. It's not something you can 'identify' your way in and out of. If it was, women would have 'identified' their way out of rape, sexual assault, murder, sex trafficking and discrimination in the workplace, a long time ago.

Not true according to the MN bigots this person is a man and should not be allowed in the womens rest room and doesn't know what is to feel like a woman

FirstShinyRobe · 01/12/2017 19:11

And anyone who has ever got someone pregnant knows without a doubt that their chromosomes are XY.

OP, I hope you can find a way to feedback.

PleaseDontGoadTheToad · 01/12/2017 19:13

Women with swyer syndrome don't have functional ovaries nor do they produce eggs so they would need to rely on egg donation in order to become pregnant. They also need hormone replacement therapy to bring on puberty.

If you've gotten pregnant naturally and you didn't need medical intervention to bring on puberty then you don't have swyer syndrome.

CorrectingBigots · 01/12/2017 19:14
