To think advent calendars waste too much plastic

I would have made one out of something reusable, but we've had some as gifts. The plastic seems pretty damn thick and the stuff can be hard to get out.

Never had a choccy plastic one.

Always have a traditional cardboard one.

We’ve got a fabric one into which I put the fabric figures that came with it. No choccies, no presents — that’s for Christmas.

My children appear to be coping with the deprivation.

Tiny
Perfect advent calendar! Now I just need to invent find the dice with initials to decide who opens the windows Grin

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 02/12/2017 09:43

This is the cardboard one I got from John Lewis for Gdcs. I love it! They're only 2.7 and 1.4 so a bit little to understand yet, but the elder loved opening the first window yesterday (and a couple more, but what the hell, can just close them again).

Love day 2 tiny!

Aridane · 02/12/2017 13:59

A real labour of love, Tiny

LesDennishair · 02/12/2017 14:08

Your calendar wins most environmentally friendly of the thread, and biggest bringer of joy, midgetbarmaid. Grin. No trees chopped down for the making of etc

Iprefercoffeetotea · 02/12/2017 14:10

Christmas is generally a waste of plastic!

We have a material one with pockets that you can put sweets in, and DH has a traditional one with pictures that he brings out every year :)

FlyingSoloFlyingFree · 02/12/2017 14:16

I saw a great idea on Pinterest - a reverse advent calendar. You put one item a day into a box throughout December and at the end donate it to a food bank. Great to do with kids and balances out all the consumerism a bit.

Bearsinmotion · 02/12/2017 14:22

Fucks me off. MIL buys the DC one each every year. This year she bought a Lego friends one so DP got them chocolate ones as well Angry.

Ironically on DD’s first Christmas she got us a fabric one, which I was perfectly happy with, it never sees the light of day now...

Lynnm63 · 02/12/2017 14:43

@TinyBarmaid that is the highlight of my Christmas Grin

CrispyDuckPlease · 02/12/2017 17:56

I'll re word my previous post that was deleted. I'm confused about Crumbs1 post on this thread as they've said on other threads that the children are Doctors/GPS/live in the city and are adults and don't live at home. It's all very odd!

CrispyDuckPlease · 02/12/2017 17:58

We have a large dice that goes with it that has each child’s initials to decide who gets to open the flap or pocket each day.

If Crumbs1's children are all grown up and don't live at home (was stated on other threads) how can they roll a dice to,open an advent calendar?

LesDennishair · 02/12/2017 18:05

Strange post deletions Confused

Very sorry tinybarmaid! I've just noticed I called you midgetbarmaid. I blame autocorrect.

Aridane · 02/12/2017 18:10

Crispy - with imagination, anything is possible

pisacake · 02/12/2017 18:12

they roll it over a webcam.

duh.

any more silly questions?

CrispyDuckPlease · 02/12/2017 18:25

they roll it over a webcam.

Is this at the same time that they decide which sheep is going to be adorned in Christmas lights?

LesDennishair · 02/12/2017 18:29

How does the daily lucky winner (s) receive their tasteful, seasonally appropriate, environmentally friendly, non tacky, joyous gift?

Maybe they have really long arms from all that rugger they play and gammon they eat? Except no. 6, who doesn't have long arms at all Sad

CrispyDuckPlease · 02/12/2017 18:36

Maybe they have really long arms from all that rugger they play and gammon they eat

Do you mean the gammon cooked in the aga that's served with Cumberland sauce in the winter dining room after carols around the piano in the hallway?

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 02/12/2017 18:40

Yes crispy that's the one. Gammon and all those prawn filled aga cooked jacket potatoes. Good source of protein, see.
