Just over two weeks ago we get an email from school about worms going round.

That day I went to the chemist the whole family had medication house bleached sheets on a hot wash etc etc

Yesterday we get the worms letter again.

On the parents text group the letter is repeated and a mother of a child in mines class casually says "oh ... Has been complaining of an itchy bum for two weeks didn't think it was worms"

What??? So you just ignored the email the letter the whatsapp group and your child scratching his arse and complaining about it?

So today I do the bleaching and medication today. The arse scratchers mum messages the group to say she'll try to get a Gp appointment tomorrow!!!

So wibu to keep my daughter off school because of disgusting parents who are too lazy to sort out worms??

DH is also scarred by Pripsen. He can't eat raspberry ripple ice cream at the age of 38 (almost literally flash backs!).

BlackeyedSusan · 30/11/2017 23:22

you can get rid of worms without medication. it takes longer. (obviously)

did you wash your child's bum every morning? did they wear pants in bed and put clean pants on every morning? did you damp dust all the surfaces in their room? did you wash all their cuddly toys? did you hoover their mattresses? if not it is likely you infected yourselves again.

however, itchy bum+ worm letter = take the bloody medicine.

Crikey, I think the poor kids let you know if they have worms... no need to check just in case. My DS has had it and when he woke up in the middle of the night screaming the house down we got a pretty good idea.

How you could let you child suffer I have no idea.
Bloody vile things

gamerchick · 30/11/2017 23:26

It really was effective. You knew they were gone with that stuff.

If you think your kid has worms then they probably do. Wanting proof first is bloody cruel making them suffer another night like that Hmm

The meds don’t hurt them, worms don’t evolve... they don’t live long enough. Fucking about just makes sure you get more eggs around your house and your kid a disrupted night they don’t need. Bizarre.

You can get rid without meds, takes about 6 weeks but you have to be totally on top of the egg spreading. They go everywhere those things. Not something I would put a kid through though.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 30/11/2017 23:30

Startled? I’d be bloody startled if someone came at me in the night waving a torch at my bum hole Shock

No need to do inspections on the off chance. Dd had them once and was pretty vocal about it and only then did I have to look. The horror!

PinkCrystal · 30/11/2017 23:32

2 of mine had worms and I thought nits was bad!! Ugh a whole new level. But I have read up to 40 percent of kids have them. Yeah they're pretty grim but not harmful but it is annoying when others don't treat.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 30/11/2017 23:32

My sister used to get worms loads as a child so I got the yukky pink drink as a precaution

haba · 30/11/2017 23:33

Omg- pripsen!!! The mere word makes me gag Sad that stuff was beyond vile

I find the boots' own worm tablets the best in terms of 'taste'... worms seem far more prevalent these days.

PoorYorick · 30/11/2017 23:34

Are worms common now? I'm early 30s, had nits a fair few times at school (hair was waist-length back then) but never had worms, nor heard of anyone else having them.

CheshireSplat · 30/11/2017 23:35

More pripsen flashbacks here. It made me gag and gag!!!! And I still can't drink ribena.

Can't believe kids today get away with a tablet or 2!

sirfredfredgeorge · 30/11/2017 23:35

Remember worms can be non-symptomatic entirely, so your kid might not let you know, they just don't get very itchy...

HuskyMcClusky · 30/11/2017 23:36

She is getting a GP appointment for suspected worms? WTF?? Confused

christmasisacoming · 30/11/2017 23:49

Alpacaandgo work or not that's no excuse to not clean the house yes also washing toys and cleaning surfaces if your kid has worms.

People saying worms are common if they are it's because of people like this!

If you work and your kid has a parasite infection work doesn't come into you sort it.

christmasisacoming · 30/11/2017 23:51

And people saying I need to calm down- that's why I'm posting on here and not telling her she's a disgusting slattern on the parents group message!

Did anyone post ‘Just go to the chemist’?

manicinsomniac · 30/11/2017 23:56

Trouble is, around 50% of primary-aged children are thought to have worms at any one time

What?! I've taught in an age 7-13 school for over a decade and, as far as was reported to us anyway, I can remember one case of worms. And that was actually a 13 year old.

Is it really 50%?! Are they mainly 4-7 year olds perhaps? Otherwise, I just can't believe it.

I've never had it in my living memory and none of my children ever have either (unless it can pass naturally without you ever realising you had it?) Genuinely did not know it was such a common condition.

Nits on the other hand - I've had several bouts of those as an adult! I see them as an occupational hazard of working with children. Worms - definitely not in the same league as far as I've experienced.

gillybeanz · 30/11/2017 23:59

Poor child scratching his bum for 2 weeks and the mother couldn't give a shit. Sad

KERALA1 · 01/12/2017 00:02

Yabu for reminding me of the horror that was that strawberry worm medicine in the 80s. Never before or since tasted anything worse. The memory has made me feel sick! Remember gagging as we forced it down. I never even had worms though my sister did.

Italiangreyhound · 01/12/2017 00:07

In my book any excuse to keep your child off school that places their needs first - is fine.

Ragusa · 01/12/2017 00:13

Worms are a long way from the end of the world and in fact there is some evidence that some parasitic/ helminth infections may be protective for your overall health, long term.

I'd only ovex if itchy bum was reported. Am not lazy or scummy, ta very much. I just don't want to prophylactically worm my children every month or two Hmm. That's the frequency the threadworms letter comes around at our school.

The reason threadworms spread at school is because children are perfect hosts and as a species human have historically hosted a whole lotra worms ;)

ScipioAfricanus · 01/12/2017 00:24

Athough unpleasant they are a harmless parasite. They aren’t three metre long tape worms from the continent of Africa. So it is unreasonable to get really upset about them (though when my DS had them I went mad cleaning and dosing and boiling). I can’t keep up a really intense cleaning regime and I don’t think this makes me slatternly.

I also don’t agree with dosing my child with medicine unnecessarily so I check when he says he has an itch. Far healthier in my opinion than over-using drugs.

CommanderDaisy · 01/12/2017 02:29

I never realised worms were such a huge , stay away from school, the world is ending issue.
Itchy bum? Whole family eats some Combantrin ( chocolate block-like, quite tasty).Everyone poops alot. Worms gone. Worms don't come back even without sterilizing whole building.
I'm obviously a slattern because I had no concept such a bleach fest was even necessary.
Huh.

justilou1 · 01/12/2017 06:40

We have a very herbal family at our school who won't de-louse their kids' hair as it's "cruel" to the lice. (School is trying to exclude them, but stupid warm & fuzzy education department is not being sensible.). I don't know how I've managed to avoid it, but those poor kids are not allowed on play dates with anyone in the whole school now.

Ilovetolurk · 01/12/2017 06:47

I can’t believe my mother made me go through the horror of having pripsen milkshakes when there was a tablet I could have taken

Chill out OP as another PP said handwash keep nails short and regularly wash pants and bedding at high temps

A fee threadworms aren’t the end of the world

Bostin · 01/12/2017 06:47

Another Pripsen victim here. We should start a support group.

I remember feeling ill for 24 hours after that stuff. I don’t know whether it was a genuine side effect or post traumatic stress from drinking the vile brew.
