To want a little snake?

I met one last week , a python, and fell in love. She was just lovely. And now I want one.

Where do I start? Where can I learn more? Where does one purchase a snake?

I have a name lined up ready.

I used to have a royal python, my idiot ex decided to give him to my 7 year old son as a present without clearing it with me first. So ... he had a 4ft tank and was lovely and docile but my 7 year old tired of him very quickly and he became mine. I'm not reptile person but I did my best. He escaped twice - 1st time I found him curled up in my underwear drawer and second time he was found curled around the table leg 🙄 They're ridiculously strong so if they decide to coil around something you have no chance of getting them off so that was a fun night.

It all went tits up though as I didn't know enough about snakes to keep him healthy - he was too big for mice but refused to eat rats so I constantly worried about him starving. It was rather therapeutic having him squeeze my arms etc but I ended up having to regime him to a reptile enthusiast as I wasn't the right owner for him and it wasn't fair to him.

I wouldn't get one personally. They're not pets.

Just unwrap from the tail end. Grin works for even the largest snakes.

People have them for the same reason people have fish.

Aww, what a lovely thread. I would quite like a snake but DH is not a fan and the cat might not be keen either :) I've handled a few at fairs and so on and they are so lovely and tactile, it really raises the endorphins. Their faces are pretty cute too!

This girl and her brother hadn't been fed for a year when she came into the reptile rescue I help with. It's taken us a while to get her feeding properly again.

Ah she’s lovely Aunt J. Does she want to come and live with me?

With all my snakes I’ve found that they get confused when feeding and home in on my hand rather than the dead prey. I think it’s the heat signature or smell. They’ll often try to bypass the mouse and detect me instead. Natural of course, but I use long tongs and gloves now to try and disguise my tasty fingers. I also try to keep the mouse warm in water until just before feeding and give it a wiggle to simulate movement. I’ve never had a problem with my royal going off food. My garters tend not to eat over winter though.

If a snake was to latch onto you then just run their heads under the tap with a gentle flow of water. They then let go. Failing that, non alcohol mouthwash.

If my "pet" tried to eat me, I'd be running more than its head under cold water! Argh!! 🙈🙈🙈
