Ours is paid for. We're going to a local restaurant - 3 courses for £18pp. Work contribute £25pp so we can spend the rest on drinks/coffee afterwards.

I've never paid for a staff night out at my current company. If a few of us decide to meet for drinks, that's different, but any work-organised night is paid for through petty cash.

YADNBU

I was away when the meal was booked; I come back to find out its £33pp, plus drinks. Everybody gets a million bottles of wine which you're expected to go in on as we split the bill. It's in the city centre so I'll need a £10-15 taxi. And we're doing a £10 a head secret Santa.

All in all I expect to be down at least £80 and I wasn't asked if that was something I could afford, yet if I don't go will either a) look antisocial or b) have to disclose details of my financial situation to validate it.

I've worked on both private and public sectors, and had paid Christmas do's for both.

Depending on the level of staff 40+ is a fair bit of there is no choice or option to order something cheaper.

We're going to a local restaurant for Christmas night out and are paying £17.95 for a three course meal. Drinks extra. Nice food too - things like camembert and cranberry or prawns to start, turkey, venison casserole for main and a selection of desserts. £40 seems steep to me as lots of restaurants locally are doing meals for between £15 and £25.

If we're talking London prices though...
