I found out this evening that our Christmas meal has been booked.... it's £40pp + drinks Shock aibu to think that's excessive?

Originalfoogirl · 27/11/2017 22:20

So, don’t go.

YorkieDorkie · 27/11/2017 22:21

I don't think location matters... I work in Leeds with colleagues earning from minimum wage through to higher salaries (primary school) and it's been £40 + drinks.

mumisnotmyname · 27/11/2017 22:22

I've always paid for my own in public sector and charity sector but we haven't gone over 25 Pounds as income levels vary widely.

buddy79 · 27/11/2017 22:23

Yanbu. I’m voluntary sector, we always pay for and organise our own, so always cheap and cheerful as we’re all on low-ish salaries. If someone just booked a £40 do without consulting the team, a lot of us would not be able to afford it.

Fluffyears · 27/11/2017 22:23

Our company one is paid for but our team one is£17.95 for three courses 🍽

VioletCharlotte · 27/11/2017 22:30

I don't do Xmas dos any more.
£40 is about average I think, but it's still more money than I've got to play with at this time of year. Its £40 plus drinks, taxi, etc. It gets so expensive. I decided about 5 years ago not to go to them anymore and don't regret it at all.

Judydreamsofhorses · 27/11/2017 22:31

I’m public sector and departments organise their own dos - no company contribution. My team’s is a £50 per head bring a party to a party thing. I’m not going (not particularly because of money, I’m just not keen on that sort of event) but the people who are seem to think it’s a good deal.

Willow2017 · 27/11/2017 22:31

Ours is free evening meal at local pub with good reputation. 3 course Xmas menu.
Work is small family owned business owners are paying for all staff to go.

£40 is steep round here. I wouldnt be going if i was charged that on min wage.

HidingBehindTheWallpaper · 27/11/2017 22:32

Seems really stingy of your work to make you pay. Is that really the norm some places?

I've never been to one that it paid for, or had a christmas bonus to that matter.

I refused to go to ours as it was £43 for some food that I don't like.

Amanduh · 27/11/2017 22:35

Yes, it's a lot for an xmas meal out where you're paying for yourselves - esp if you work somewhere where people are earning £7.50 p/h and it's a couple of days wages to get there/back eat and have a drink! We usually stuck to a £20pp budget(ish)

littlebluefox · 27/11/2017 22:39

You know you're gonna get the women on here whose high flying hubz is on £200K and they themselves actually earn MORE than him saying £40 is nothing. Of COURSE it's fucking high! £40 (not including booze taxis) is waaaay OTT for a works meal.

My DH's is £12.50, and mine is £14.99 (set 3 course meal at a local pub.) £40 is a piss take.

foodfrax · 27/11/2017 22:42

It's also an hours drive from where I live. I'm not going to go... it's not my idea of fun. We do have gatherings around colleagues houses with a bring your own and it's great fun, I do like my colleagues.

BringOnTheScience · 27/11/2017 22:42

I used to be in an industry where there was a company-wide budget per person and each team chose how to spend it.

Then I was public sector and we very much had to pay for our own do.

Now I'm private sector again in a far more 'affluent' industry. Christmas do is fully paid for and includes taxis to & from! Downside is it's "black tie" so we spend on that instead.

Italiangreyhound · 27/11/2017 22:43

A bit too much to pay unless you desperately want to go and can afford it.

I prefer it when there are choices, one course for XYZ, two for, three for etc. So people can choose, not everyone eats 40 quid worth of food (sadly, I do!).

ilovesooty · 27/11/2017 22:49

Ours (Leeds, voluntary sector) is £44 - 3 courses and half a bottle of wine included at a hotel with a disco.

toriatoriatoria · 27/11/2017 22:49

I'd say that is on the pricey side. Add taxis on top of that and it's looking expensive.

Catra · 27/11/2017 22:50

I've always had to pay for my work Christmas do.

It's never been anywhere near expensive as £40.

To be honest they've all been shit but they've been in work's time so I've always gone, but if it was that pricey without the booze I'd say forget it.

BakedBeans47 · 27/11/2017 22:51

Meh, I think that’s quite expensive.

I’ve hardly ever had a Work do paid for in my last job we used to get a tenner contribution and paid the rest ourselves.

greendale17 · 27/11/2017 22:52

a crappy set menu - in a bog standard restaurant. No drinks and nothing Christmassy about it

YANBU- I wouldn’t pay £40 either.

afishnotabird · 27/11/2017 23:37

I think it would be fine for a BAPTAP type night, but just for a meal is excessive.

Would be over the moon to have a night out paid for by my company. MN and my world are such different places

StarWarsFanatic · 28/11/2017 00:39

I'd say that is expensive. Not bothering with works do this year, tbh I never do but it is never that much. We're going out for Christmas dinner this year and it's only £25 a head + drinks.

Chrys2017 · 28/11/2017 00:40

I work in the public sector and an evening do with a bit of food and some drink is paid for - not excessive amounts, but it's a thank you for our hard work during the year.

Looks like you're the only public sector worker on here getting a free meal. Good to see our taxes are being so well spent!

TooManyPaws · 28/11/2017 00:49

Ours was around that last year but that was for a full Christmas party night with bubbly before, a three-course meal (with choice), and an absolutely brilliant live band. This year I've moved jobs within the organisation and our small team of people is going out for lunch. We're public sector and have always paid ourselves - nice to know where the mark up on goods and services is going with all these paid for dos 😉😁

Skarossinkplunger · 28/11/2017 07:11

I work in the public sector, and never had my Christmas meal paid for. Hell we even have to bring our own lunch to training courses.

ChessieFL · 28/11/2017 08:16

I have worked in both private and public sectors. Public - nothing paid for, we just organised our own team outings and paid for ourselves. Usually £20-£25 for three course meal so £40 just for a meal seems expensive to me - I would expect some drinks or entertainment to be included for that. Private sector - company pays for big party with meal, some drinks and entertainment, plus we have a separate team meal where the company contributes a bit and we pay the rest.
