To shout at the dog owner..?

I think you should be able to say something when dog owners let their dogs bother other people and jump up at them. I literally was just sat minding my own business in a secluded corner of my local park when a large muddy dog jumped up to where I was sitting and started pawing me. Now I actually really like dogs, but it does not mean I want yours dirtying my coat or standing on me. As the owner approached I said..'Hi... I'm a bit muddy!" To which she responded, "well you shouldn't be sat here, of course he's jumping up at you!" Flabbergasted I responded, "So it's my fault your dog is all over me..?" And she said yes! And then proceeded to call me a miserable sod. I mean for goodness sake, I just asked for her to get her dog off me, I should be able to enjoy my local park as well. As you can see I'm amazed at people's ignorance, brazenness and rudeness. Thoughts?

I'd have used a few choice words, that's for sure.

monkeywithacowface · 27/11/2017 15:49

I would be mortified if my dog jumped on an unsuspecting person at the park! He's only a pup and still a bit giddy so I am always very vigilant when we walk past others.

sailio · 27/11/2017 15:50

Thanks- nice to know I'm not losing my mind :)

I'm a dog lover (and owner)

It's considered very poor form for your dog to jump up at someone else, especially when muddy. It has happened to me before while walking the dog and I regard it as a hazard of being at the park, but I certainly do not allow my dog to jump up at others.

AlpacaLypse · 27/11/2017 15:52

I'd have apologised (while secretly hoping you weren't going to present me with a dry cleaning bill Grin). But also I wouldn't have had a bouncing dog off lead in the sort of park that has benches anyway.

Brenna24 · 27/11/2017 15:53

Dog owner of 20 years here. That sort of attitude makes me furious. Everyone has the right to sit anywhere they want in the park without getting jumped upon by a dog who is under my control (or not as the case is here). Then to compound it all with that attitude. Please be assured that is not right, or normal, and not all of us are like that. I bet she is in the not picking up brigade either.

Silverthorn · 27/11/2017 15:54

Some people are just twats. She'd have got more of a mouthful from me.

retirednow · 27/11/2017 15:56

This is why dogs are supposed to be on a lead, what would happen if that person was petrified of dogs, was a child, elderly, this happens all the time where I live. There are signs up to say dogs must be kept on a lead and walk on the outer edges of the playing fields but some people just ignore it. They obviously feel the rules don't apply to them and their precious pooches and are clearly far too lazy to just walk an extra five minutes to the open areas where dogs can run free.

Elphame · 27/11/2017 15:57

As a dog owner I'd be mortified if mine did that. I've been the victim of muddy dogs jumping up at me too in the past. I have an excellent death glare I wheel out at such times.

Saying something is definitely not unreasonable!

TemptressofWaikiki · 27/11/2017 15:57

Bloody hell! I'm a dog lover and dog owner but this is beyond rude of that owner! What appalling behaviour! I spent considerable time to train mine to never jump on anyone and expect that from other dog owners too. Yet I constantly encounter especially, small handbag pooches that have zero training, jumping up and clawing my legs. It bloody hurts and snags my clothes. I tend to pick up a free newspaper en route to the park to read later. I started rolling it up and giving these kinds of dogs a light whack. If people don’t train or discipline their dogs, don’t expect me to tolerate it.

mamahanji · 27/11/2017 15:58

I have a really friendly Labrador. She has only ever jumped up at someone once. Unfortunately she had the most awful thick tarry mud on her paws all over the ladies tan coat. I almost threw up in shame. I could not apologise enough, offered to pay to have it cleaned or replaced. The lady was lovely and said 'oh no don't be silly, It will wash out.'

I think a lot of dog owners with their 'my dog is perfect and can go anywhere and do anything they like' give all dog owners a bad name! It is always the owners fault/responsibility to keep their dog at heel or on a lead or with brilliant recall if you are letting them run free.

Not a chance were you in the wrong there!

BumpowderSneezeonAndSnot · 27/11/2017 15:58

Dog lover and owner here. I'd be furious if I were you moreso if I had my dog with me (reactive and on lead at all times) There is nothing I hate more than uncontrolled dogs. I'm ok with off lead IF the dog has impeccable recall and will walk to heel without bothering anyone or anything

InDubiousBattle · 27/11/2017 15:59

YANBU, me and dp have been shouted at by a dog owner before, it came bounding up to us and knocked my 2 year old off her feet. Owner was calling the dog but it wouldn't stop leaping about so I got hold of it by the collar whilst dp tried to calm our now screaming dd. When the owner got to us I said that the dog should be kept on a lead and got a mouthful in return. Between the shit, the jumping up, the mud and the bloody disgusting uninvited licking, I can't stand people who don't take responsibility for their dogs. Some of my best mates have dogs and are perfectly reasonable about those of us who don't want anything to do with them so it's not impossible.

Prusik · 27/11/2017 16:08

For goodness sake, some people are so ignorant. (The dog owner, not you, op)

My dog was happily playing in a field a year or so ago and a lady shouted 'excuse me, please can you put your dog on the lead so I can cross the field'. What did I do? Call my dog back and put him on the lead. Simple. The dog 100% would have ignored her but that's beside the point

sailio · 27/11/2017 16:13

To be honest the human in this situation bothered me more than the unruly dog..! It ruined my walk and made me so frustrated. I did not respond to her really as I could see she was a very unreasonable person and I didn't want to get into a slanging match. I really appreciate all the good dog owners out there who keep an eye on their dogs and call them BEFORE they reach you, and who apologise if their dog bothers someone. I can't stand it when people let their dogs bowl into my 86 year old grandma. She's unsteady one her feet and actually just doesn't like dogs... but hey that's another story.

retirednow · 27/11/2017 16:17

I hope your GM doesn't get knocked over, I've seen this happen but still nothing happens. The signs are there, the threats of fines are there but some people just don't care and believe that there dogs are cute, friendly and entitled to do what they want. It's not the dogs that are to blame, it's the selfish, uncaring and self important owners.

SammySays · 27/11/2017 16:23

Some dog owners really wind me up. There’s a children’s park behind our old home (we’ve just moved) and had several run ins with dog owners who had the cheek to reprimand me for letting my then 1year old daughter run around the children’s park (complete with slide, swings etc) when they wanted to take their dog off the lead! I have had so many negative encounters. I don’t know if it’s my bad luck but I do tend to meet very entitled owners who think their dogs should have free reign.

BillyDaveysDaughter · 27/11/2017 16:32

Nope, YANBU at all. Disgusting attitude from the dog owner, they must lack intelligence.

I have a small dog but she is aggressive, so she is never off the lead anyway and I stay as far away from other life forms as possible. But last weekend I was walking - dogless - along a footpath with a friend of mine who is rather nervous of dogs (she was knocked down and badly bitten as a child).

A woman with an off lead whippet appeared, and the whippet proceeded to bound enthusiastically towards us. It clearly wasn't slowing, and I heard my friend gasp in horror as it prepared for take off. I quickly reassured her that this was a friendly approach and there was nothing to fear (happy body language, just a young bouncy dog), but I did step in front of her to take the brunt of the thing cannoning into our legs I don't care, I'd have rolled around and played with it.

The dog meant no harm and actually it didn't jump up - but the owner seemed very blasé about it dashing over and colliding with us, acted as though it was to be expected! Poor friend was quite perturbed.

Bloody people. Hmm

Madbengalmum · 27/11/2017 16:34

Imstill, say there should be an IQ test to own a dog. YANBU, any decent dog owner would not allow that to happen.

Frederickvonhefferneffer · 27/11/2017 17:22

Dogs should be kept on a lead unless they have excellent recall and can be trusted to not bother others.
She was being a twat. Yanbu

ZoopDragon · 27/11/2017 17:32

YANBU

People who let their dogs jump up should be banned from taking the dogs to public places. Actually I think all dogs should be kept on leads in parks. I hate being approached by boisterous dogs especially muddy/wet ones!

I would have yelled at her too!

sall74 · 27/11/2017 17:37

YABU... for sitting in a park on the coldest, wettest most miserable day imaginable! What possesses you to want to do that?!

FatBottomedGal · 27/11/2017 17:43

Urghhh I’m cringing at your post because this is exactly the sort of thing my mum would say to someone Sad She’s become a bit angry and unreasonable in her old age and doesn’t have a filter! There have been many times when she’s told me a story of her being incredibly rude to someone and I’ve had to tell her off!

Sorry you had to put up with this woman, Flowers

NellGin · 27/11/2017 17:56

I’d be mortified if my dog did this. Mind boggling that she blamed you.
