I was driving to a meeting today, mostly motor way or national speed limit but do pass though a few little villages at 40 and 30 MPH limits. I always try and do right speed as always remember that ad where little girl is broken against tree saying "hit me at 40 theres an 80% chance I'll die, hit me at 30 and theres a 80% chance I'll live", ooo makes me shiver!

Well some silly cow in a golf was right up my backside, waving her hands, and swearing at me for doing speed limit, making gestures as if to say "what the hell you doing"! Grr does anyone else have this problem or am i weird for not wanting to kill some kids on my way to places??

Well when walking along the pavement today I was getting chivvied along by some old bloke in a mobility scooter. He kept slamming the brakes on an inch from my heels and tutting!

DrDaddy · 19/04/2007 18:53

FYI DW was on 6 points and got caught doing 39 in a 30 zone. They offered her the chance to do a speedchoice workshop to avoid getting another 3 points. She was about 8.9 months preg at the time and waddled into this workshop to surprised looks all around. She said it was actually really good and informative and made you think about safe driving in built up areas. She thinks it should be mandatory for all drivers.

Blondilocks · 19/04/2007 19:09

I hate that. They do that through my village as well.. once there was a van & I just went through @ 20 as he'd really annoyed me for about 6 miles, pretending to look for a turning

powder28 · 19/04/2007 19:11

Before I had children when people did that to me I used to slow right down when cars were coming the other way then speed up when the road was clear to overtake so the idiot couldn't get past. Now I am responsible for little people I just let them past.

Blondilocks · 19/04/2007 19:16

There was also an idiot white van driver on the motorway .. I was overtaking a caravan, doing 70, pretty clear motorway, white van driver comes tearing up behind me, then overtook in the empty outside lane, pulled in straight in front of me slammed the breaks on, went in the inside lane then when I'd gone past pulled out again & drove past flashing at me.

Not too sure what his problem was, nothing wrong with my car, was daylight, had my grandma with me who also thought he was a complete idiot & could have just overtaken rather than pissing about!

& don't get me started on the people who overtake on my route to work. I must have seen hundreds of near misses I've seen, like people overtaking about 5 cars while approaching a blind corner.

While on that point would it be better to slam brakes on & sweve into the side of the road (eg trees, wall) @ say 50 mph then have a head on collision with a car going 70 + overtaking? Have been pondering this... but wonder whether you would flip if you hit the side of the road? Thoughts please!

whomovedmychocolate · 19/04/2007 19:17

chocolattegirl - Actually I'm a bloody awful driver - I take full responsibility for this - can't deal with gears despite having been driving for over a decade. I constantly start off in third thinking it's first, and can't park for toffee.

Consequently I give other cars a lot of room (too much in my DHs opinion) but at least I don't tailgate.

MrsFish · 19/04/2007 19:25

As has been mentioned earlier on I wash my windows ALOT if anyone is up my backside

Blondilocks, better to hit trees I think as they are going 0 mph, where as if you hit someone at 40 and they are going 70, you combine the speeds, so actually have a collision of 110 mph.

Or so I understand it.

When I lived in the States I was barged out of my lane by a police car
There were two left lanes, left to go left or straight and the other to just go straight. I was in the left lane but was going straight, as I had to turn into my apartment building shortly after the light junction. The cop obviously wasn't paying attention and didn't see that I was not indicating to go left. When the lights changed and I went forward he drifted into my lane to get into my lane and cut me off causing me to have to move over. I wish I hadn't moved and let him scrape my car, or beeped him or something, cos it's illegal to change lanes inside a junction anyway.
I was so pissed off and shocked that I sat in the junction catching flies, and didn't/couldn't beep him.

SparklyGothKat · 19/04/2007 19:36

I remember one day on my driving lesson, I went to overtake a parked car on my left when suddenly this moron decided to overtake me at the same time, he went completely on the wrong side of the road, made me freak out, I panicked and turned the steering wheel towards the parked car Diving instuctor grabbed the wheel, as I was about to hit the parked car (therefore making it my fault) I had to pull over in a bus stop and calm down.

chocolattegirl · 19/04/2007 20:16

My bf does my head in as he will try and get past 'wagons' on single-carriageway roads but has to get really close to them before he goes past them as he drives a little Ka. I wouldn't mind too much but as I'm on the side that would clout the other vehicle if it happened, I've made him promise he won't do it when I'm with him .

Personally, I'd follow the lorry for 20 miles rather than try and get past it but then I'm probably more cautious.

J20BABY · 19/04/2007 20:27

good idea mrsfish!

margoandjerry · 19/04/2007 20:33

Anyone just heard "captain gatso" on Radio 4? He's some self-appointed driving rules sabateur - has not registered his car so is never caught for speeding, parking, congestion charge evasion, non-payment of insurance; sets fire to speed cameras; has set up a fake address where he and his crapola friends can "register" their cars so the authorities can't track them down.

He believes the ad with the little girl saying "if you hit me at 40 there's an 80% chance I'll die..." is just govt propaganda and thinks people, including children, should take personal responsibility - if they walk into the road without looking properly and die, they've only got themselves to blame.

God almighty.

IMHO there are few more serious crimes than driving without insurance. It's the ultimate "screw you" gesture to the rest of society.

margoandjerry · 19/04/2007 20:34

saboteur.

I think.

kickassangel · 19/04/2007 20:39

bandofmothers, yes, but cars are made with crumple zones which do absorb the speed, whereas trees don't. alos, depending on how the curb is constructed, you can flip/spin your car. braking ina straight line is generally best if possible.

chocolattegirl · 19/04/2007 21:34

Surely if Captain 'twat' Gatso is caught by the boys in blue (if only) then not only him but his friends, the media and anyone who interviewed him is as culpable for his bad driving habits as they know what he's up to . It would only take a phone call whilst he's being interviewed in some studio and he could find a friendly copper waiting to talk to him about his car registration details outside.

I'd have to ring up if I worked in that sort of environment and heard someone like that being interviewed - even if it meant me losing my job as a result.

Linnet · 19/04/2007 21:58

I only passed my test last year and got my car on a Tuesday. On the following Saturday we went for a family trip to Falkirk and had to go down the motorway, which I was prepared for as I'd done the pass plus and felt fairly confident going on the motorway.

It wasn't that busy and I was doing fine, came up behind a lorry and pulled out to overtake as I'd been taught. I was coming up to almost being next to the lorry but not quite there and this Silver BMW came speeding up behind me, undertook me on my left and nipped in to overtake the lorry going in front of me in the outside lane. I have never been so scared in my life and I was so amazed and cross that someone would be so stupid as to try something so dangerous that all I could say to dh was "did you see what he did? did you see that?"

I hate it when on the motorway I always seem to overtake a lorry and there is nothing coming along the outside lane and there is no sign of any cars when I first pull out and just as I'm passing the lorry a car always appears behind me and is practically on my tail. Now I'm going at 70 mph and getting past the lorry but these cars are always right behind me and once I've pulled in again they go speeding off at god knows what speed, it really annoys me, why are they in such a hurry, where the hell are they going that they have to go at such a speed?

chocolattegirl · 19/04/2007 22:10

I had to turn right onto a dual carriageway through a gap in the railings - this was a perfectly legal manoeveure - and when I checked left there was nothing in either lane for about a mile. As soon as I pulled out, a car screamed out of nowhere, flashing lights, horn beeping and rode alongside me in the inside lane shouting abuse at me (he didn't give me a chance to move over). After my initial instinct was to hit the gas, I realised that there was no way I could outrun him, he was still right beside me shouting abuse at me plus I could see the motorway signs coming up. I had visions of him forcing me onto the motorway so I dropped back and let him scream off into the far distance.

To this day I have no idea what his game was or why he came out of nowhere so fast. My family were in the car behind me and they were almost as shocked as I was. Well, I was fuming to put it lightly.

Ali5 · 20/04/2007 07:38

Fillyjonk - I don't mind I got caught for speeding, as I said, I hold my hands up to that. The point I was trying to make is that speeding is very common on roads where serious accidents could happen and the speed is NEVER policed on them.
I think speed cameras are placed in areas where easy money can be made, I don't think they are there to make our roads safer - which I'm sure after reading these posts is true.

marieg76 · 20/04/2007 09:35

I recall one occasion on the M4 when DH and I were heading to Wales to stay with friends. The road was very very busy but some complete jerk pulled in in front of us in the fast lane. He pulled in so suddenly and at such speed that his car wavered for a few minutes. We were really horrified and DH gave him a few beeps a flashy lights.

Next thing we knew, this jerk had pulled into the middle lane and was trying to drive into our car to force us into the barrier (i.e. trying to make us crash). As DH was driving I saw this mad man looking completely out of control driving his car at me. Thankfully, DH slowed back and let this jerk go. I was absolutely terrified and crying. We called the police and gave them his car details but never heard anything back.

Some people on the road are absolute lunatics and completely disregard other drivers.

BandofMothers · 20/04/2007 09:50

People are morons. I remember several times in the US driving in very busy traffic, and people would push into the overtake lane(which was also packed and slow) then push back into the lane they were in 1 car ahead of where they were.
I always thought that traffic would probably move a lot faster if people just stayed in their lanes and let those that were getting off at junctions across. I mean really how much faster will youget there if you're one car ahead of where you were????

chocolattegirl · 20/04/2007 10:04

I think part of the problem is that people either don't use overtaking lanes correctly - to OVERTAKE in not drive down the whole length of the motorway in - or the other reason could be that there are so many cars on the roads nowadays that there simply isn't room for us all to be accomodated in the first lane or two leaving at least one lane free for overtaking drivers (sp). Still no excuse for someone to choose to drive at silly mph up our backsides to make us go faster if all three lanes are chocker - we don't all drive the car from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and so far I've not learnt the art of levitating my car.

theshrimp · 20/04/2007 10:34

BmW men drivers are always the most aggressive to me, but I drive a golf . . .. I will floor it on the motorway when overtaking but NEVER speed through town or on country lanes. Too many horses and corners. Would never forgive myself if I even hit somebody's pet.

IcingOnTheCake · 20/04/2007 10:46

Last year when i was 6/7 months pregnant i was being a bit hesident pulling out onto a busy roundabout. I took my chances and quickly pulled out, sadly for me though the man who was waiting BEHIND me decided to pull out at the same time and try and over take me on my right. All i heard was the sound of tyres screeching and the next thing i know he had hit me.

He did look sorry he had done it though when i got out the car with a big bump! He had a small boy in the car so he should have known better. He said to me it was because my car was green and green cars look like bushes and are hard to notice

marialuisa · 20/04/2007 11:41

After a 12 hour round trip taking in various motorways, I have to agree with Chocolategirl that poor lane discipline on motorways is a big problem. It is incredibly frustrating to see people tootling along at 70 mph in the middle lane on clear stretches of road.

HGVs attempting to overtake each other don't help much either.
