I was driving to a meeting today, mostly motor way or national speed limit but do pass though a few little villages at 40 and 30 MPH limits. I always try and do right speed as always remember that ad where little girl is broken against tree saying "hit me at 40 theres an 80% chance I'll die, hit me at 30 and theres a 80% chance I'll live", ooo makes me shiver!

Well some silly cow in a golf was right up my backside, waving her hands, and swearing at me for doing speed limit, making gestures as if to say "what the hell you doing"! Grr does anyone else have this problem or am i weird for not wanting to kill some kids on my way to places??

When people drive up my backside I drive even slower just to piss them off! I then laugh at them in the mirror!
I was a passenger when my friend was driving and some chav, boy racer idiots were almost touching our bumper. So my friend slammed on the breaks and yep, you guessed it crashed into the back of us! (was only about 30 mph)Her car had a tiny scratch and there car was dead! I bet they didnt do it again! Not always an ideal thing to do but it is so irritating! There were no kids in the car btw!

marieg76 · 19/04/2007 10:06

I hate it when this happens. I'm always wary of doing the braking thing as you never know what lunatic is behind you. My non-aggressive method to get them off my backside is to wash my windows using plenty of water - they then have to wash theirs and generally back off to avoid having to do it again. It really does work.

Golf driver, enough said
Stick on your fog lights and watch her s*it herself.

IcingOnTheCake · 19/04/2007 10:14

I hate those tale gating f@*king w@%kers! What i don't get is do they really think that by tale gating you your gonna drive faster!

dionnelorraine · 19/04/2007 10:16

Its unny when they do that, over take you and get a whole 1 ca in front!! they look really stupid then!

IcingOnTheCake · 19/04/2007 10:16

I do get frustrated when i am stuck behind some old dear doing 20mph but i never tale gate.

IcingOnTheCake · 19/04/2007 10:17

Yeah thats always funny when they are so proud that they have over taken you then get stuck behind the car in front of you!

I dont like granny drivers either but I dont tailgate I just mutter to myself.(cant swear cos my dd is generally in the back!) It still doesnt piss me off as much as tailgaters!! Tosspots!

dionnelorraine · 19/04/2007 10:34

You have to be careful of road rage too, a few years ago there was a phase of this in my area. They would tailgate, the person being tailgated would curse them, so the tailgater would over take and stop infront of them, get out their car with baseball bats! scary!

IcingOnTheCake · 19/04/2007 10:35

Another that annoys me is when people try and not let you in when 2 lanes are becoming one, when its a merge in. Your not pushing in because its a merge in people.

RedLorryYellowLorry · 19/04/2007 10:36

I had a similar incident to SGK's dh. I was driving home one night at about 9 pm. In my mirror I could see a car approaching at speed. It got closer and closer and was right up my back. I sped up and then slowed right down as I was panicing. He went to over take but there was a bollard so he had to slam his breaks on. Only when he was alongside did I see it was a police car. I mouthed FO just as I realised. He then put on his lights and siren. He didn't stop me just sped past. I was shaken up as there have been incidents of being forced to stop and robbed in my area. I didn't report him but wish I had

IcingOnTheCake · 19/04/2007 10:37

There's a long list of road stuff that bugs me! I think everyone has pet hates of their own.

myweegirl · 19/04/2007 10:40

my work sends us on 'drive and survive' courses - they get a discount on the insurance if we all do it. and a good tip i learned is if someone is sitting up your backside and you want them to move back is to put on your skooshers and hold it for a 5-10 seconds - the spray automatically flies back to their windscreen so they then have to put on their wipers and slow down.

i would say it does work 90% of the time.

or other ways is it to put on your hazard or fog lights rather than chance touching the brake.

DrDaddy · 19/04/2007 10:41

Has anyone noticed, btw, that the REALLY aggressive, foul-mouthed, hand-gesturing, up your arse drivers tend to be early 20s women? Or is it just me..?(Please don't think I'm being sexist here, I realise that there are loads of complete tosser whitevanman types and boy racers too).

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 19/04/2007 10:44

I know this is a bit radical on this thread.. but I am often almost crying with stress and frustration as I am forced to do 30-40 mph on a ten mile stretch of road I have to drive on daily to get the kids from school. The speed limit is 60. WHY can't people do something approaching the speed limit?? It makes me late for picking DD up and I hate finding her standing on her own at the gate. She is in Y3 (juniors) now where they just dismiss them..

You may say "leave earlier then" but my life doesn't really work like that. Anyway, they should just bloody drive faster! I am not asking them to exceed the limit FFS!

IcingOnTheCake · 19/04/2007 10:44

Hey i'm in my early 20s and i aint like that. I don't think theres a specific age, it's just random drivers in general that do these things.

IcingOnTheCake · 19/04/2007 10:46

Yeah thats annoying when the limit is 60 or something and drivers are doing 30-40mph. I still don't talegate though, if there a chance of safely over taking i will.

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 19/04/2007 10:50

No I don't talegate either. I just stress, curse and stew quietly to myself and mutter things like "just get out and "walk" FFS!!"

I don't have it in me to actually drive in a road-rage manner (not would I want to!).. but I do sometimes feel it inside!

I was on the motorway when a bloke in a big merc came right up behind me and flashed me to get out the way - I was overtaking a lorry and couldn't, so I pulled over as soon as I could. He pulled over in front of me then slammed his brakes on - I swerved into the hard shoulder and then he drove alongside me and wouldn't let me out again for about a mile. I was terrified. I got off the motorway as soon as I could and reported him. The police took a statement but I never heard anything again.
My aunt, who's a driving instructor told me years ago the best way to deal with stupid driving is to slow right down because then the damage is limited and if they drive into your boot they are totally at fault insurance wise.
I admit I hate dawdling at 40 mph on a 60mph road but since becoming a mum I stick really rigidly to speed limits!

vimfuego · 19/04/2007 10:54

I was a 9 pointer for a few months... it certainly changes the way you drive!

IcingOnTheCake · 19/04/2007 10:56

yeah i do too since becoming a mum. i think to myself i aint gonna put my baby girls life at risk all because you wanna act like a prat on the road!

dionnelorraine · 19/04/2007 10:58

I crashed into the back of another car a few years ago. Her car was fine, mine was smashed to bits! it was a traffic jam, going about 20mph on and off. No, I wasnt tailgating but i turned my head for a second to look at a girls shoes!!
That and being a mum has changed the way I drive!

whomovedmychocolate · 19/04/2007 10:59

I don't normally speed but I too get annoyed with (usually very old) people who are driving at 20mph in a 60 zone. But I just overtake them if it's safe, or rationalise that they will be dead soon so I can wait an extra 30 seconds.

But, I got a speeding ticket driving 35mph in a 30 zone because I was in labour and I didn't realise (first baby, I just thought I had a massive stomach cramp and accelerated a tad during it - then saw the camera van) AND I couldn't got to court because it was in the next county and I had a newborn I was breastfeeding, nor could I attend a speeding course. So I have three points and I don't think the laws in this country are fairly enforced.

I personally would be happy to have a incar speed device - you can get fined for going too slowly you know (impeding traffic flow or something). as well as too fast.
