Jacket potatoes - help settle an argument

Hmmingbird · 26/11/2017 16:54

Following on from a conversation with a friend, I just want to know who is being unreasonable.

I eat the whole jacket potato, skin and all. The skin is the best bit (provided not burnt) IMO.

My friend thinks this is totally wrong, and says the skin is nasty.

Who is right in this instance? Surely everyone eats the skin!

It's a matter of personal taste. Sometimes the skin tastes nice, sometimes not so much, depending on how it's cooked.

We're all different. Some people like the skin of a rice pudding, others say it makes their skin crawl.

Wauden · 26/11/2017 17:24

Also I can happily eat a plate of new potatoes with some grated cheese on top. Nom.

SenecaFalls · 26/11/2017 17:25

Of course eat the skins. Do you all not have "potato skins" as a starter/snack/finger food in the UK?

You're both right and wrong.

It's personal preference. Do what you like and eat what you like.

toffee1000 · 26/11/2017 17:30

Seneca yes you can get loaded potato skins. I love them.

1DAD2KIDS · 26/11/2017 17:36

SexLubeAndAFishSlice or that was at least one of the advantages of my ex wife, I was able to hover up all her left over skins. If I'm ever on OLD again I will specify that they must not like eating their potato skins.

notangelinajolie · 26/11/2017 17:37

I only eat the skin if it's been washed and and checked for bad bits and then cooked in the oven till its all crispy.

Microwave jacket potato - no way!

DrSeuss · 26/11/2017 17:41

Save butter wrappers, use them to rub the skin of the potato before baking, then roll in a little salt.

ineedwine99 · 26/11/2017 17:42

Skin is bloody awesome, best done in the oven so all crisp

BarbaraofSevillle · 26/11/2017 17:45

If you want a crispy skin but don't want to wait ages, an acceptable compromise is to do the potato in the microwave for five minutes then put in an oven preheated as hot as it will go for another 5-10 minutes.

PinkHeart5914 · 26/11/2017 17:51

I’ve always eaten the skin so she is bu!

JaneEyre70 · 26/11/2017 17:56

Cooked fresh, they are the food of the Gods and I eat every scrap. Reheated, they are the work of the devil. I love them cooked at home but tend to avoid in cafes/restaurants for that very reason.

Middleoftheroad · 26/11/2017 17:57

She's being incredibly unreasonable and you may seriously need to re-evaluate your friendship if she cannot grasp that a crispy, oven baked skin is how a jacket (or is it baked?) should be.

There is no debate to be had.

The only time it should touch a microwave is to soften it up before it goes into the oven.

bluelampshade · 26/11/2017 17:57

Roll the spud in oil, sea salt and black pepper halfway through cooking.

The skin is fabulous with loads of butter which has soaked through the fluffy white part whilst eating.

chickenowner · 26/11/2017 17:58

YANBU

The skin is the best bit!!!

Allwashedup · 26/11/2017 17:59

She is BU

DameDoom · 26/11/2017 18:03

Oven cooked skin with proper butter and posh salt - literally food of the gods. The smell is glorious.

ILoveMillhousesDad · 26/11/2017 18:09

Slow cooker jackets are 😋

Surely if the skin isn't eaten, it's not 'jacket' potato, just a potato. I always thought the jacket was the skin.

user1497997754 · 26/11/2017 18:11

Cook in microwYe and then crisp off in the oven I rub garlic over the skin and seasalt......lovely

FlouncyDoves · 26/11/2017 18:12

Got to eat the skin.

Pre-heat oven at 160c. Prick and cover jackets in oil (or that stuff that you use on Slimming World - works just as well) then wrap in tin foil. Cook for 1h15m. Then take foil off and cook for a further 15m. Perfect, crisp skin and fluffy in the middle. Every time.

Maria1982 · 26/11/2017 18:12

Skin is the best bit!! So long as it's oven cooked not microwave that's the only reason I cook them in oven

IrnBruTortie · 26/11/2017 18:30

We had already planned baked spuds with a variety of toppings for tea. I am lucky in that DH gives me his skin, and DS gives DD his. Absolutely the best bit!
