Jacket potatoes - help settle an argument

Hmmingbird · 26/11/2017 16:54

Following on from a conversation with a friend, I just want to know who is being unreasonable.

I eat the whole jacket potato, skin and all. The skin is the best bit (provided not burnt) IMO.

My friend thinks this is totally wrong, and says the skin is nasty.

Who is right in this instance? Surely everyone eats the skin!

Toffee - I had cheese and prawns on mine. Sounds weird but tastes amazing.

You are right.. but having worked in catering I wouldn’t eat the skin anywhere other than home as I wouldn’t be sure they were washed! (Obviously I washed them when I was on shift but plenty of others didn’t!)

Why would I wash something that’s going in the oven, which is really hot?

GriefLeavesItsMark · 26/11/2017 17:05

Your friend is a weirdo. Suggest you cut all contact asap.

Bluntness100 · 26/11/2017 17:05

I don’t like the skin, my husband does, so he eats his then when I’m done he eats mine,,,😂

Serialweightwatcher · 26/11/2017 17:08

You're right - skin is yummy Grin

FitBitFanClub · 26/11/2017 17:08

Your friend is a loon. They're not technically "jacket" potatoes if you don't eat the skin, are they?

DontLookBackIntoTheSun · 26/11/2017 17:09

Because potatoes come from the ground with a layer of dirt on them! We buy proper Fen potatoes which come with mud attached (though I wouldn't bother to wash prewashed supermarket potatoes)

BarbaraofSevillle · 26/11/2017 17:09

You wash them (or use ready washed potatoes) because otherwise there is clumps of dirt on the spuds which doesn't taste nice or have a good texture, because it's not food.

Neither of you are right or wrong. If you like the skin, eat it, if you don't. don't. I eat pizza crusts. Plenty of people leave those.

BewareOfDragons · 26/11/2017 17:10

As long as you scrubbed it before you baked it, I don't see the problem...

Your friend is bonkers.

KittyandTeal · 26/11/2017 17:10

Skin is easily the best bit, especially if you put a little oil, salt and pepper on before baking. That’s our dinner tonight

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 26/11/2017 17:10

Lovely crisp potatoes skins..... yum..... I think I'll pop the oven on for a nice jacket spud now.....

RoryItsSnowing · 26/11/2017 17:10

She's clearly nuts. Crispy, salty, baked potato skin is delicious!

NeverUseThisName · 26/11/2017 17:11

You are both right.

RiseToday · 26/11/2017 17:11

She's a weirdo. Obviously you bake them with the skin on!

Rebeccaslicker · 26/11/2017 17:11

Then why does she think people actually pay for the skins in restaurants?! YANBU.

Jeanvaljean27 · 26/11/2017 17:11

She's clearly not cooking the skin properly. Forkholes, oiled, salted with sea salt, crisped in oven. Becomes the tastiest bit after this treatment.

maddiemookins16mum · 26/11/2017 17:12

Depends on

a) if the potato is fluffy
B) the skin is crispy.

A good jacket spud (with lots of butter) can be a wonderful thing. A bad one (wrong type of potato and limp skin) is just awful.

Sadly, there are more bad ones than good ones in my experience.

Trills · 26/11/2017 17:14

The skin is SUPPOSED to be eaten.

Some jacket potatoes being rubbish doesn't change that.

alfagirl73 · 26/11/2017 17:14

You are definitely right to eat the skin. Love a baked potato! Crispy skin... fluffy potato... bit of butter... cheese... Mmmmm I want one now! :-)

mizu · 26/11/2017 17:15

We eat a lot of jackets in this house, skins are the best bit and like a PP has said, fork them, bit of oil, bit of salt and into the oven they go. So easy.

I cannot see the skins go to waste, if someone leaves theirs, I'm straight in there.

NNchangedforthis · 26/11/2017 17:15

I keep my skin, then cook it in the microwave until it’s snappable! Add salt and pepper for the best snack ever!!

highinthesky · 26/11/2017 17:20

I haven't had a jacket potato for years, but really fancy one now!

Mittens1969 · 26/11/2017 17:20

You're absolutely right, the skin is absolutely yummy when it's done just right. I do them in the microwave and then the oven for half an hour. It's the whole point of jacket potatoes, and plus it's full of goodness. I'm trying to convince DD2 that it's good and she should eat it. She is getting the idea now. Smile

NinonDeLenclos · 26/11/2017 17:21

Skin is great. Microwaves turn food absolutely vile.

1DAD2KIDS · 26/11/2017 17:23

Oh no the skin is magic because it times your potato by 2. First you put your topping on and eat out the whole jacket potato leaving the skin in tack. Then you stuff the skin with more topping and eat that too. The later bit being more enjoyable than the first.

Or is that just me?
