Have just come back from holiday, where I put on a bit of weight. I'm quite short (5 foot!), so every pound is showing :(

Any ideas on what to eat to lose some weight? I was thinking yogurt for breakfast, protein-based lunches and dinners... any other ideas would be great :)

Thanks!

Doris you forgot the cocaine Grin

Chrys2017 · 26/11/2017 17:23

If you're going to eat yogurt for breakfast make sure it's plain Greek yogurt (for the protein value) and add a few berries and/or pumpkin seeds if desired. Don't eat non-Greek and/or pre-sweetened/fruit yogurts if you're trying to lose weight.

You could always become a breatharian

I’ve lost two stone in the last six months using MyFitnessPal to count calories & upping my exercise massively - couch to 5k, plus weekly Zumba and swimming. Having reached my target weight, I can feel myself slipping just by not paying enough attention to what I eat, so my advice is count every calorie - it’s eye opening!

ComingUpTrumps · 26/11/2017 21:37

Thanks so much everyone :)

I've signed up for a few 10k races (have done one every month for the past few months, but have also eaten a lot of junk!!) so will keep up with running, and will try to run at least 3 times a week.

With eating, I'll have something like Greek yoghurt with nuts and berries for breakfast, salad with chicken or fish for lunch and chicken/fish with veg for dinner. And I'll try to drink around two or three litres of water a day. Does this sound reasonable?

I found my weight came off when I had no sweets, chocolates, biscuits, crisps in the house and just drink water in the house. Also, don’t take your bank card out (just cash) with you so you are not tempted to pay for petrol and buy some snacks in the petrol station!

Panicattheschoolgate · 26/11/2017 21:44

Switch dream nod to only water. Will lose a few just doing that alone.

Panicattheschoolgate · 26/11/2017 21:44

Predictive text isn’t my friend. Switch drinks to water only.

Sunnyjac · 26/11/2017 22:22

Exercise, smaller portions, no snacks. You’ll probably be hungry at first but quickly get used to it and then it’s your normal and you don’t have to think about it. No need for calorie counting, diets or any of that stuff

NurseButtercup · 26/11/2017 22:40

This is working for me:
Reduce red meat and sugar intake.
Reduce processed food/ready meals. Cook everything myself (also save money this way).

Stick to three meals a day.

Porridge for breakfast keeps you full until mid-day.
Soup/salad at midday.
Chicken/Fish with loads of green vegetables and a very very small portion of rice/potatoe/pasta.
Drink water when you're feeling peckish in between meals.
Exercise at least three times per week for a minimum of 30minutes. I'm following the couch to 5k programme on the treadmill. I follow this up with resistant weights for 30minutes. I'm on week 2, so far I've lost 7lbs. I'm determined to get back into size 12 by July 2018. Good luck xx

JaceLancs · 26/11/2017 22:46

I eat low sugar low carb and low fat - bear in mind I mean low not no!
Lots of healthy fruit veg salad meat fish poultry
Try not to eat processed food
I have also cut down on alcohol - lost 4 stone so far
I also exercise 2-3 times a week

Gazelda · 26/11/2017 22:58

I'm another MyFitnessPal fan. It's very motivating, it keeps me on track.
I wear a Fitbit which incentivises me to move more. My DC has one too, and always tries to beat me!
Protein at breakfast to keep you fulll until lunchtime. Homemade soup for lunch. A 'cook from scratch' meal for dinner. And I have snacks, but all calorie counted.
I must admit I've slipped with drinks -I don't count coffees, squash etc. I'm going to try to up my water intake for the next 4 week's until Christmas, by which time the habit will have hopefully stuck.

NewLove · 28/11/2017 23:28

In winter I don't wear a coat - keeping warm is great for burning calories... Obviously if out for hours then I would, but 30 minutes being a bit cold isn't a biggie.

If I'm hungry I drink a glass of water first - sometimes thirst can be confused with hunger.

I don't diet, eat like a pig and am always size 10-12

19lottie82 · 28/11/2017 23:42

Don’t snack. Portion control. Eat more protein. Exercise more, inc weights.

The thing with Slimming World, Weight Watchers, Low Carbing ect ect is that they may work in the short term, yes, but are they sustainable indefinitely? No. That’s why the vast majority of people put the weight back on again.

Carbs aren’t our enemy. If you use myfitness pal you can scroll to the bottom of your food log to see where your calories are coming from (click “macros”). You should be aiming for 40% fat 30% carbs 30% protein.

Bosabosa · 28/11/2017 23:49

I am down to a size 12
For first time in years. I have done it by cutting out sugar-it is terrible for you. Read David Gillespie.
Don’t eat things with more than 4g of sugar per 100g.
I eat lots of everything else. But sugar mucks about with your satiety hormones so if you don’t eat it, you tend to eat less anyway.
Good luck

TriHard27 · 28/11/2017 23:50

If I want to drop a few pounds then I generally eat the same way I always do but a lot lot less of it and make sure I run every day for a week or two. This makes me tired and grumpy and wouldn't work as a long term solution but it does the trick here.

okilydokily · 28/11/2017 23:58

I've managed to lose 10lbs and keep it off for a year. I cut out bread and reduced portion sizes for things like pasta and pizza. Because I can't have toast for breakfast and a sandwich for lunch any more, I've had to be more creative. I tend to have berries with Greek yoghurt, chopped nuts and raisins for brekkie, then a chicken or feta salad for lunch. Then a normal dinner (not avoiding potatoes or rice; just avoiding bready things). I didn't believe it would work, but it has. I'm not bloated anymore either. I still have wine, crisps and chocolate. It's way easier than the 5:2 diet or doing calorie counting.

Rubbermaid · 29/11/2017 03:28

My top tip (I’ve lost just over a stone since September so slow but steady) is, if I’m hungry and it’s not a mealtime (because yes ideally you shouldn’t snack but sometimes you do just get hungry between meals!) I have a cup soup, and if I’m craving something sweet I have an options hot chocolate. So I might have a couple of each a day and as they’re liquid they fill you up for not many calories.

Battleax · 29/11/2017 03:36

I thought for a moment that you'd gained 5 feet on holiday Grin

Paleo all the way.

TealStar · 29/11/2017 03:37

I find that going to bed hungry is unfortunately one of the only ways (hence my being awoken by gnawing hunger pangs tonight Sad)

SocksRock · 29/11/2017 05:03

Eat less and move more. I've started running and am now training for a half marathon. Cut out sugar, lots of protein to fill you up, all the veg and limit carbs. I've lost nearly 2 stone since August 1st.

It is hard work though

rockcakesrock · 29/11/2017 09:31

I know I told goes against perceived wisdom, but I weigh myself every night and morning. This gives me an idea of what type of food makes me gain weight. Quite often I have been out for a meal, had wine and expected to gain weight. Surprisingly it often has not resulted in. Any Weight gain. Conversely when I think I have not eaten very much I have gained.

Biggest thing for me to avoid Is Bread. I will gain more by having a Chicken Sandwich for lunch than a Roast Chicken with the usual accompanyments

Individuals all have different things that their body will store and this is the only way that I have learned about myself, I have stayed approximately same weight for 2 years. if I gain 2 or 3 lb over a week, I know what to do the next week to lose it.

I don’t find moving more works for me, but I do have quite an active lifestyle

rockcakesrock · 29/11/2017 09:32

Sorry first sentence did not makes sense. I know it goes, not told

specialsubject · 29/11/2017 09:36

Nothing boosts metabolism.

Eat fewer calories. Doesn't necessarily mean less food, you can have a lot of pasta and veg for the same calories as a piece of cake, a commercial smoothie or a diet ready meal.

Moving more burns calories and also means you aren't eating at the same time.

SlowlyShrinking · 29/11/2017 09:44

Low carb high fat.
Don’t restrict calories because your body will respond by lowering your metabolism, with the result that you will need to eat even less to maintain the same weight. There’s been some research done on contestants on ‘The Biggest Loser’ in America, and they’ve all put the weight back on, and all now burn an average of 800 fewer calories daily, due to the body going into starvation mode.
Intermittent fasting, interestingly, doesn’t cause starvation mode. Google Dr Jason Fung. It’s really interesting when you look into the science behind this. Fat storage is caused by high insulin levels, and to lose fat, you need to lower insulin levels, which can be done by low carb eating and/or fasting
