Behaviour at concerts/theatre/cinema

Last night I went with a friend to Wembley at see STEPS, yes they were brilliant, thank for asking. My friend kept glancing back to two women behind us and I became more and more aware that they were chatting. No about the concert or STEPS but about I said this he said that, blah blah. STEPS were on the stage at the time. The woman next to me was also bothered by them and rolled her eyes to her husband/boyfriend.
After them talking through three songs, I turned and said,
"I've paid to see them (pointing to the stage) not listen to you, so can you pipe down." The woman I spoke to said "sorry." like a tantrum four year old and looked at me like dirt.
AIBU to think that people no longer know how to behave and need to be told.

Grin Shirley it was a test of strength .

Whatsername17 · 26/11/2017 19:55

We had this at the theatre. It was a performance of American Idiot by Green day. Admittedly, it is more of a rock opera than a straight play. But the fucking idiots screeching along behind us pissed me off. I paid to watch the show and listen to the actors. The attitude of the entitled never ceases to astound and anger me.

chiaseeddisapointmentagain · 26/11/2017 20:00

You had no right to talk to her even if it was STEPS.

YABU to even want to see STEPS

Paddington68 · 26/11/2017 20:04

moutonfou - there were a few new songs, but all the old favourites were there. They came on stage at 8.40pm and left at 10.10pm.
Vengaboys were great and so was Max something or other.

People are rude, selfish shits.

DH and I went to see Wolf Hall. I coughed exactly twice and the woman in front of us turned around to glare at me, yet she and her friend spent most of the play talking to each other in loud whispers.

I have told people off more than once in cinemas for looking at phones, loud chatting and general disruptive behaviour. That kind of thing is one of the reasons I rarely go the cinema now.

Ttbb · 26/11/2017 20:10

I once had this at a violin thing for the whole hour and a half. I should have said something but the women behind me were three times my age and I was too awkward as a teenager to dogthag kind of thing.

Blahblahblahhhhhhh · 26/11/2017 20:26

Mine is clapping. Clapping along to a song like your a todler singing wind the fucking bobbin up. No-one over the age of 6 should clap in time to music. But their it is on the tv. Someone famous is performing somewhere on some tallentless show. And every fucker in the audience is clapping. Clapping is for appreciation at the end of a performance. Not a join in let's clap to the beat we all love this song lalalalala.

....and in standing room only gigs, when the person next to you starts dancing (or should that be flinging their arms far and wide)and so digging you in the ribs with their elbows. Bad news when it’s packed as it was (Gary Numan Manchester Academy in October).

Or the same, but dancing in front of you where you can’t see the act because of the arm flinging, as you are unable to dodge around them........grrrrr.

WanderingJules · 26/11/2017 20:31

Glad to get that off y chest, thanks op 🙂

I went to see Harry Styles the other week, singing was encouraged, everyone, including me had their phone out.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 26/11/2017 20:48

The phones at gigs is so ubiquitous and pathetic I can't be bothered getting annoyed about it any more.

Talking and using phones in the cinema will get me turning round to say something, as will nattering through a concert, play or comedy show.

My worst is Australian Pink Floyd in the Liverpool Echo Arena a few years ago. Guys in front of us talked loudly to each other, pounded a load of beers, repeatedly had to get up and piss with much fuss each time and to crown it all, they'd eaten something very smelly and kept burping it. APF do obviously quite an atmospheric and chilled show. These pillocks ruined it. They were also extremely abusive to anyone who asked them to pipe down.

Bloodybridget · 26/11/2017 20:59

I have very good hearing and can't bear people talking during concerts, films, etc. I glare, then ask them to be quiet if I'm close enough. Good for you, OP!

MrsGrindah · 26/11/2017 21:14

All you people who say something though...do you get abuse etc. back? Or just ignored? I’ve said something a few times and it rarely ends well. I’m seriously thinking about packing it all in

shouldnthavesaid · 26/11/2017 21:34

Went to see Joseph and Tech Dreamcoat a few years ago .. man behind was very drunk and sort of groaning along to the songs. Bizarre. I still laugh at the memory.

Worst is my sister at panto, or films she loves, she's not so bad now but when she was younger she couldn't contain her enthusiasm and would be singing, cheering, dancing, laughing very loudly .. the looks we got Blush. Thankfully panto does autism friendly nights now so hopefully a bit of noise and enthusiasm is expected by everyone ... she doesn't go to big cinema, just local one (school hall with a projector on a sat afternoon) , apparently that's a bit of a free for all so she's grand there Grin.

As for clapping - I'd only do that at panto or where its encouraged (eg am-dram) etc. Would be taken aback to see it anywhere else really!

NancyDonahue · 26/11/2017 21:48

We saw Steps the other night. We were surrounded by people constantly making trips to the bar, wobbling back spilling most of their drinks on the way.. and repeat! It was funny rather than annoying though. I don't know how you heard anyone talking, it was so loud, myself and friend couldn't hear each other when we were shouting right in each other's ears!

The show was hilarious. I wasn't expecting much from the Vengaboys but they were great fun. Steps did all the oldies, it was great hearing everyone singing along. Some obviously get snobby about pop bands but it is pure joyful nostalgia filled escapism for a few hours.. what the heck is wrong with that? Live and let live.

AnneElliott · 26/11/2017 22:03

We went to a Dolly Parton concert and during the 2 hours the people next to us were up and down about 10 times getting food and drink. Find it hard to understand why adults can't go 2 hours without getting eating!

anotherprosecco · 26/11/2017 23:00

Was at a big (v expensive ) concert at the Albert Hall, big star, all right then, Cliff Richard - the two women next to me were on Facebook all the way through, the light on their phones was so distracting. In the end I had to say something and they actually shamefacedly put their phones away. Another time on a cruise, Alfie Boe was performing, all we could see in front of us was a sea of mobile phones - just why?

alltheworld · 26/11/2017 23:06

Went to a concert by a singer songwriter who had one famous hit..a romantic song. Everyone was sitting down, he sang his famous song at the end and some idiot stood up, turned his back to the stage and did a video selfie for the entire song with an inane grin on his face.

alltheworld · 26/11/2017 23:06

Years ago went to a Norah Jones concert in Paris and you had to check in your mobile phones

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 26/11/2017 23:11

Yanbu, OP. I embarrassed my Dd s at their school " young musician of the year" concert as one little guy sang then came and say in front of me and yakked away with his pals. I tapped him on the shoulder and said "people were quiet for you, can you please be quiet for others?"

People in general are arseholes. It's the only good thing about the impending zombie/viral apocalypse. There will be far fewer of them

PlaymobilPirate · 26/11/2017 23:22

Yanbu- gives me the rage!

Dick head behind me (last time I went to the cinema with ds) let her kids turn on their disco trainers the second it went dark. They were back row - top of the stairs - so really noticeable. She huffed that the kids liked them on when I asked her to turn them off!

Dippydippydora · 26/11/2017 23:23

At a boyzone concert Blush with my mum Blush
We had a youth group behind us who had got free tickets and they sat there saying how shit boyzone were and started heckling and swearing, it ended up with them being chucked out.
The worst one though was was at the musical Joseph and the amazing technicolor dreamcoat, Joseph was played by the law Steven Gately and the guy behind us though it was so funny to yell "I closed my bum" in the tune of any dream will do whilst his party sniggered. Obviously in reference to Steven Gately recently coming out as Gay.
After he had done this for about the 6th time My DH who has not a violent bone in his body but who is very well built turned around leaned towards him and sung again in the tune of "Any dream will do "
"And if you carry on, you will get twatted ahh" everyone laughed around him and
The guy shut up,

Dippydippydora · 26/11/2017 23:24

Can I just say my DH informed me he quickly checked around for any child before he swore at the guy
