Hmm. I see it on nearly every thread. I don't even know what the hell it means but I fucking hate it.

Am I alone on this?

Maryz · 25/11/2017 01:06

When Hmm started it meant or and I used it like that for a long time after it turned into [sceptical] or [I think you are talking a load of bollocks]

Last time I said that everyone said I was misremembering, until some wonderful person found an archived page that actually showed the list at the end of the page with Hmm ponders (or might have been thinking).

I'm sad about it, I like the meaning, it actually meant "I'm listening to you, aand even if I don't agree with you I'm still polite enough to consider your side of the argument".

Wink meant just that - [ wink ], as in "I'm talking a bit tongue in cheek and having an amusing conversation with you" whereas most people seem to think it means "I'm being snarky but pretending not to be".

I don't like it when people use all the complicated ones, or the apple ones, because (a) I don't see most of them and (b) I don't understand most of the ones I do see [gimmer]

Maryz · 25/11/2017 01:08

Jaysus, that was long.

I will go back and crawl under my rock HmmGrin

pictish · 25/11/2017 01:15

Hmm is the best one!
It denotes skepticism or disdain very well.

Ellie56 · 25/11/2017 01:18

Hmm Yes YABU.It's a great emoji and sums up what I think of a lot of posts on here.

We need a bleurgh! one for those vomit inducing threads we seem to have seen a lot of lately.

MrsAJ27 · 25/11/2017 01:23

I fucking hate this Biscuit so much more!

ScreamingValenta · 25/11/2017 01:28

I've caught myself trying to use strikethrough on 'jocular' work emails occasionally.

Oh, the shame - jocular work emails - cringe

Vitalogy · 25/11/2017 01:37

I'm jealous of all the extra emoji, I only have basic ones Xmas Sad

TheDowagerCuntess · 25/11/2017 02:32

I hate this one: 🙂

The tight little Presbyterian smile.

Either you're happy or you're not. If you're happy, then crack out a proper bloody smile.

This guy, I like: Grin You know you're going to have a good night out with that dude.

CheapSausagesAndSpam · 25/11/2017 02:45

The tight little Presbyterian smile.

Grin

That conjures up such images Dowager!

Smitff · 25/11/2017 02:59

Hmm is totally passive aggressive and so so English. It’s a really complicated message communicated so easily. For me it’s “I really don’t think so, sweetheart” with a dose of “you’re full of shit and so unclever”.

KnockMeDown · 25/11/2017 03:18

I have often wished that the Hmm was one of the like etc emojis on Facebook. I think it would be very useful on there!

hevonbu · 25/11/2017 03:43

This is the one I personally like the least:
😍 The Heart Eyes Emoji

I find the emoji looks absolutely crazy ಠ_ಠ with those heart-shaped ♥‿♥ eyes.

hevonbu · 25/11/2017 03:44

Have no problem with the Hmm emoji, though.

treaclesoda · 25/11/2017 04:06

I love the Hmm emoji.

It's the perfect response to a drip feed for example, such as:

My neighbour looked at me and smiled, then said 'it's cold this morning, isn't it?'. AIBU to find it really rude and intrusive?

Then there are about 100 replies saying 'what is wrong with you? That's a perfectly normal human interaction, just smile back and be on your way. It doesn't mean she wants to move in with you, she's just being friendly'.

Then OP comes back and says 'well, I forget to add that she also phoned my GP pretending to be me and got the results of my blood tests, and last week I came in to find that she had broken into my house and was sitting reading my bank statement in one hand and my teenage diary in the other. I just find her really intrusive'.

And that's when you crack out the Hmm emoji.

Readermumof3 · 25/11/2017 05:32

My "friend" over uses this one constantly 😔 and it really annoys me. Talk about self pitying...it's used numerous times a day.

venellopevonschweetz · 25/11/2017 06:03

I wish I could do exactly that face irl.

@UterusUterusGhali

I can, it's known as "the eyebrow of doom" or my "Seriously? face" and amuses my DS no end 😁

ArchchancellorsHat · 25/11/2017 08:15

Your friend shouldn't be allowed use of the phone emojis, reader it looks like genitalia. Though, as established, I need glasses.

strugglingtodomybest · 25/11/2017 08:24

I love the Hmm and wish I had it on my phone.

Thanks to this thread, I now realise that all those crossed out blue boxes are Apple emojis that don't show up on my phone. Do Samsung emojis also not show up on Apple phones? This is why we should stick to MN emojis only!

It reminds me of Tommy Lee Jones looking up from his newspaper.

Sparklingbrook · 25/11/2017 12:05

It's the smiley emoji Smile that causes a lot of problems. PA apparently. Confused

shittyshitybangbang · 25/11/2017 12:40

😭. Is another one I hate, it pisses me off when someone sent me that emoji.

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 25/11/2017 12:48

Doesn't that just mean someone is upset?

I don't tend to use emojis on my phone, I just explain in words, usually in a hurry.

shittyshitybangbang · 25/11/2017 13:01

I think it's crying and laughing at the same time.

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 25/11/2017 13:07

I only see the crying and it looks sad not laughing.
