Do I really look in my late forties??

I got the pill today from the chemist. The pharmacist asked me if it was for contraception or HRT? I'm 42 and felt stupidly shocked that I've suddenly become older than I though I was!!!! Or would he just have seen my age on the form?!

OP posts:
Mrsknackered · 23/11/2017 13:57

My grandma and Mum have been on HRT since early 30s.

Ethylred · 23/11/2017 13:58

You're old when someone offers you their seat on the tube.
How very dare they.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 23/11/2017 14:00

I agree Polly You don't have to stop taking the combined pill at 35. As long as you don't smoke, have normal blood pressure and are not overweight, fit and healthy you can continue to 50.

Advice to stop at 35 yrs would take the above factors into account as they significantly increase the risk of clots and stroke.

Can we have a picture OP? Then we can all tell you if you look a day past 40. Smile

This thread is useless without photos

Then you'll get some smartarse jumping on to tell her she doesn't look a day over 72.

Whatsoccuringlovely · 23/11/2017 14:08

Ethylred

Yippee I am 50 and just got off a crowded jubilee line and no one offered me a seat!

My day is made. Op once past 40 most people look anything between 40 and 50 and the ones who have ‘work done’ usually look older. See housewives of Cheshire. Don’t sweat.

Evelynismyspyname · 23/11/2017 14:09

Yep - if people post "how old do you think I look" on a forum with a photo half the respondents will try to be kind and guess younger than they really think, and half will try to bring the poster down a peg or two and guess a lot older.

Then it will turn out that the photo is photoshopped/ taken after hours of carefully applying theatrical grade make up with skill to appear fresh faced despite being hidden under loads of make up (as in those dare to go bare face book photos there was a brief trend of posting, where most people were actually still wearing make up) ... or of course lifted from somewhere and not the OP at all!

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 23/11/2017 14:12

But a bit pointless anyway when the pharmacist won't have been inspecting her that closely anyway, and just asking the question as per usual because it's part of the standard procedure.

MiniTheMinx · 23/11/2017 14:12

This would irritate me. You had a prescription, issued by a doctor. What business is it of a pharmacist to know what it's for.

stevie69 · 23/11/2017 14:12

Over 40 I think you are just 'old'.

Pffft. Go tell it to someone who's listening!!! Wink

gabsdot · 23/11/2017 14:13

Last time I had an x-ray at the dentist they didn't ask if I could be pregnant.
I'm 47.

VladmirsPoutine · 23/11/2017 14:13

Vladimirs - unfortunately, I went through menopause at 22. Early menopause is pretty shit.

Hanuman I accept that was an error on my part. I thought that there'd be a way of delaying or postponing such a circumstance. Did you ever go on to have dc or do women that experience this ever go on to have bio children?

Shizzler · 23/11/2017 14:14

Pharmacist Bloke probably interacts with over 50 people a day. More efficient to ask questions that cover all scenarios than try to guess as to what the customer’s exact situation is.

ByThePowerOfRa · 23/11/2017 14:15

I think there was a caller on This Morning today who was 22 and going through the menopause.

PollyPerky · 23/11/2017 14:16

pollyperky It is in my doctors surgery! I wanted to go on it (I'm 31) and the doctor said they follow the NHS guidelines that suggest no pill (perhaps only combined?) after 35 and 30 if I smoked.

You didn't say it applied to smokers.

I think you have misread it.

This is the correct info- see last bullet point. Cut off age is 50 for non smokers.

Back in the day, I used to think 24 was the point that youth ended and after that you were just a dried up, shrivelled old hag waiting for death to sink its icy claws into you.

Of course, I was only 11. I assume the PP is of a similar age. Or 80 and deeply ironic. Grin

lalliella · 23/11/2017 14:17

OP we don’t know how old you look, post a pic and we’ll tell you!

ElsieMc · 23/11/2017 14:17

Honestly op, that is nothing. I once got asked if I was over 60 - I'm 56 and felt very offended even though I guess I am pretty near 60!

On the other hand, I am a grandparent carer and some teachers call me "mum" in reference to my gs. I always correct them but they tell me I should take it as a compliment.

Funniest was an emergency doctors appointment when he asked me if I could be pregnant, yes really. I nodded towards my date of birth on the screen and he burst out laughing. Its a miracle!

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 23/11/2017 14:18

I have the reverse of this. In that a lot of people working in shops and pharmacies look about 12 to me these days.
I was shocked when a 14 year old in a suit introduced himself to me as my bank manager.
He probably thought I was ancient (mid 40's)

GrockleBocs · 23/11/2017 14:18

Vlad a friend who had a similarly aged early menopause found herself unable to have children and it impacted her horribly. She'd always wanted to be a mother.

Whatsoccuringlovely · 23/11/2017 14:19

Butchy

That made me laugh out loud Grin

I'm sure there was a woman on This Morning a few years back who gave birth (natural conception, totes appalled) at the age of either 52 or 54.

CotswoldStrife · 23/11/2017 14:21

I also think it is the fact that it's the pill and they (certainly used to) encourage you to move off the usual contraceptive pills and on to the ones more suitable for over-40's - or they did with me, new ones were useless and had constant breakthrough bleeding Hmm

fartyghost · 23/11/2017 14:25

Pharmacists are probably in the habit of checking the age - it's how they noticed that my only-just-started-school child had been prescribed adult medicine.

MsHarry · 23/11/2017 14:32

If you are in your 40s it's a legit question. Many women take HRT in their 40s, some late 30s.
