To ask about washing powder

AIBU to ask for your washing powder recommendations? What actually gets your clothes clean and your white white? Thank you.

Ariel original. I keep going back to it.

Fairy liquid tabs! For whites vanish platinum powder & stain remover (sainsburys own - I SWEAR by it and have tried everything, it's the best). X

I am going to ask everyone a very very stupid question. Do the boxes of washing powder come with a measuring spoon/cup? I bought a box based on recommendations on here and I don't know how to measure out the powder.

I only use fairy non bio gel.

Lidl's own concentrated laundry liquid, and it comes with a measuring cap..

I like the gel because I can use less if it's not a full load.

Isn't gel bad for your washing machine? I use Ariel for whites & Ariel colour for others. I buy it in Booker in huge boxes. If Ariel isn't on special offer I get Persil but I prefer the smell of Ariel.

Liquids and gels don't have bleaches so dont keep your whites as white. I sent away from a free measuring scoop. Think the details were on one of the boxes

Bluebells1 they don’t normally come in the box, generally you call the company or go online and they send you one for free. I don’t use one personally I just put a yoghurt pot full in with each wash it works for me

The Miele repair man told me off for using washing powder saying 'this is not a cheap machine, you should treat it right' after my machine got clogged with powder residue. He recommended Persil Liquid detergents. That was 5 years ago and I haven't had a problem since. I also use Dr Beckmann Glowwhite sachets for a white hot wash and colour collector sheets for mixed loads.

Persil brings me out in a rash. I get on ok with Asda own brand though I'm not keen on the fragrance. I usually use about a half of what they say to use.
If it needs a boost I add more and use the Oxy powder from the pound shop.

Daz powder, cheap and cheerful but does the job and smells lovely.

I use Ariel Liquid Tabs. I used to use the powder but it's so messy and clogs the draw and I actually find the tabs clean clothes better and they smell nicer!

Ariel liquid tabs and yellow lenor. Vanish gold added for whites. Always go back to this.

Good old Daz. It does smell lovely, without being overpowering.

Much cheaper than gel, as well as the other benefits. The only downside is somewhere to store it.

Non bio liquids and gels aren’t good for washing machines. They don’t kill off any bacteria that will accumulate in a warm damp atmosphere and you will end up with mould and a smelly machine. The gel also forms a nasty gungy mess and often is the main reason people have to call out washing machine repair men.

I used to use non bio liquid and DD’s eczema got worse and worse and my washing machine started to smell. I switched to Ariel powder and my washer stopped smelling and DD’s eczema disappeared. This was because the mould was aggravating it.

I use Ariel powder for whites and light colours, and Fairy powder for colours and delicates.

Liiinoo I've also had a Miele repairman tell me that liquids were no good for their machines and all their contents were predominantly perfumes.

Another one for Daz. I used to use Tesco's cheapest, but I was having to soak stuff in other things for stains etc, then one day they didn't have it, I bought Daz and every damn thing came out clean and fresh! Also my mum used to use it, so I like the smell... Have stuck with it ever since and I swear it does a good job - got dried in blood out the other day without any pre-soaking or faffing. It's pretty cheap, too.

I use Ariel Colours gel for everything - with a scoop of soda crystals to soften the water / protect the machine, a GloWhite sachet in white washes, a Dylon Brilliant Blacks sheet in with dark washes and a slug of Dettol laundry disinfectant in with cold washes and gym kit. Seems to work, my whites stay white, nothing bobbles and I don't have the problem I used to with some things coming out of the wash smelling fusty.

Daz liquid. Brilliant and it doesn't clog the machine with undisolved powder.

It's the only one that doesn't I my stupidly sensitive eczema whilst keeping things clean and doesn't smell like I've rolled in a bath of flowery chemicals.
