Perhaps the mc people don’t feel they have anything to prove
But bloody heck some of them are scruffy buggers !!

You're right

Jeannie78 · 22/11/2017 19:49

No, MC and WC are the same. It's the UC who don't give a flying fuck.

WhooooAmI24601 · 22/11/2017 19:49

Everyone get their stats ready on whether their towels/genitals/children are washed hourly/weekly/monthly.

Yearly in this house. A bi-monthly wet wipe is plenty to keep the nether region clear of muck, I find.

timeforabrewnow · 22/11/2017 19:49

I meant you're right OP

usernameinfinito · 22/11/2017 19:51

Someone told me cleanliness is related to income. The more money you have to do social activities: restaurants, cinema, concerts, plays, art exhibitions, etc., the less you care what your home looks like in terms of cleanliness because you are rarely there. The opposite if your leisure activities are indoors due to lack of money: internet browsing, tv watching, netflix, etc. If you are usually indoors it will bother you if your home is dirty/unclean.

FruitCider · 22/11/2017 19:51

I’m not so certain, I’m a “foreigner” so still don’t quite get the class system but based on social capital I’ve been told I’m “established middle class”. My house is spotless. In fact DP and I achieve a level of cleanliness in our house in 1 hour that exceeds houses who supposedly have someone cleaning them constantly all day!

Oh, and we all visit the shower very frequently too 😉

VelvetSpoon · 22/11/2017 19:52

That's an impossibly sweeping generalisation.

I once went to the home of some very upper middle class people - children educated at v expensive boarding school, massive Edwardian house, all horsehair sofas and family oil paintings. The house was a bit dusty and grubby, their (big slobbery) dogs ate from everyone's plates at dinner, and there were cats all over the work surfaces and food prep areas in the kitchen.

However I've also been to 'poor' people's houses that were equally grim. I don't think cleanliness is a preserve of the working class.

somethingDifferent38 · 22/11/2017 19:57

A weird and classiest view - also you seem to equate cleanliness with dressing smartly (stating that some middle class people are 'scruffy'). Its perfectly possible to dress in a casual relaxed way, but be clean. Its also possible to wear very smart clothes, but not wash enough!

LardLizard · 22/11/2017 20:02

Ali, I don’t think it’s that, I think it’s more wc would worry if they were reported to ss it might look bad maybe even lose their children

Plus it’s less accepted amongst most people they know
For the kids to look like they need a good bath and hair wash and the house and car to look like it needs a good clean

RebeccaWrongDaily · 22/11/2017 20:03

look at the kids in hand me downs/unbrushed hair etc. they're either bohemian middle/upper class parents, who don't give a shit what anyone thinks of them or v poor kids. ( i am stereotyping here of course)

same with houses.- I am pretty middle class, you take me as you find me (ditto the house) I have pals who are really concerned about shoes in the hallway/washing up in the sink. IDGAF

Vango · 22/11/2017 20:04

Grin so funny.

I always hope that people wonder if we're secret millionaires. I try to cultivate this image with a less than pristine house and a very scruffy car. We're not particularly tidily dressed either. I suspect we've nailed it judging by your OP!

derxa · 22/11/2017 20:04

placemarking

Difficultsitch · 22/11/2017 20:05

Upper middle here, huge old gaff, cobwebs everywhere, furniture old and battered ,never iron, shit heap of a car, clothes scruffy and ancient but beautiful and expensive .

Have no interest whatsoever of what others may think of me!

LardLizard · 22/11/2017 20:06

Username, I think that could also be a factor, I agree with that

GF posts crap. Why engage?

I was thinking how nice it sounded, not grim at all.

Alisvolatpropiis · 22/11/2017 20:09

November

I find programmes like Downton genuinely interesting, not for their content but because it’s portraying what was actually the dying age of aristocracy as it was understood until that point. Until WWI particularly, working “in service” as a domestic employee was a major source of employment for the working class. It decreased a bit after WWI but continued, after WWII it became massively less common, a dwindling industry.

WTBE · 22/11/2017 20:09

Ding Ding!

Aliosa · 22/11/2017 20:09

Nah it’s true, we do have cleaner houses

Better sex too Wink

Crumbs1 · 22/11/2017 20:10

I agree there are clean households and grubby households and downright filthy households. I’m not sure it’s class related to be honest. There are plenty of people living in poverty whose houses are truly grim. There are some pretty mucky older UC people who are unaware of the detritus that surrounds them.

Kickassname · 22/11/2017 20:11

🏆 Dumbest thread of the week.

x2boys · 22/11/2017 20:11

Meh i have been in some rank council houses (I live in one btw) and other houses that arnt to clean either some people are clean some arnt some are like me where its a work in progress

user1471596238 · 22/11/2017 20:11

Probably a bit tricky to prove without a lot of research. Sounds like some sort of vague assumption.

Aliosa · 22/11/2017 20:12

Best class indicator is kids hair

Scraped into plaits/bows/buns = WC

Unbrushed boden boy/tangled girl bob = MC

ButchyRestingFace · 22/11/2017 20:13

Well, LardyLizard is certainly presenting a compelling case so far. Have you ever thought of taking the bar, OP?

I'm vair upper class myself. In fact, I may even be typing this message from a certain north easterly castle in Scotland... 👸🏼
