AIBU to think that gender should not be the only essential part of their identity which people can self-define?

If people are now entitled to choose their own pronoun and gender identity, why not other parts of their identity?
For instance, if I were to announce that I am now 23 and beautiful I should be treated as such?
If I were to decide that I am now Irish I could keep my EU passport after Brexit?
Or that my friend who is under threat of deportation should be entitled to a British passport simply because she self-identifies as British?

How would you define your true self (which others will now be legally obliged to respect and acknowledge?)

Oh, another trans thread?

RaininSummer · 21/11/2017 22:55

Well it does show how stupid and delusional self declaration of gender is.

shakeyourcaboose · 21/11/2017 22:55

I am self identifying as taller so.that i don't have to ask for help reaching the top shelf in the supermarche!

Anymajordude · 21/11/2017 22:58

Well I still self identify as being 29. My face has other ideas.

afrikat · 21/11/2017 23:07

Ffs can't we keep all the trans bashing to one fucking thread?

wierd7678 · 21/11/2017 23:09

mumsnet should create a transgender topic i wonder how many people posting on the numerous threads have met a transgender person because i have not

SciFiFan2015 · 21/11/2017 23:09

There is a growing number of people who are transracial and I have heard of transage too. So some of the suggestions above are truer than you realise.

picklemepopcorn · 21/11/2017 23:10

I am a cat. I will come and go as I please, demand the best seat, eat my dinner which you will give me whenever I ask. In return I may sit on your lap. Occasionally. If I fancy it.

People can present however they want. I can wear fur, attach a tail, etc. I won’t be a cat though. Sadly.

I object to being called transphobic. I support people's desire to live and dress however they want.

MammaTJ · 21/11/2017 23:10

I can and do identify as being ginger, rather than grey haired. That seems to be accepted by everyone, pretty much! Why not transgender then?

RaininSummer · 21/11/2017 23:12

When will people realise that discussion is not trans bashing and the topic is understandably huge right now because of the massive change to our society which is being ushered in with no real debate outside of this forum.

RaininSummer · 21/11/2017 23:15

I have a trans friend btw but that doesn't stop me worrying about what is happening or knowing that she is still a man really although I would not be rude enough to tell her so.

afrikat · 21/11/2017 23:17

RaininSummer because in general it's not a debate it's just an echo chamber of people claiming 'trans women aren't real women' and generally coming across as narrow minded with their viewpoints already decided and they just want validation from other people who think the same. I don't see the need for multiple threads a day on the same subject with the same people saying the same thing. Either keep it on one thread or get mumsnet to start their own topic so those of us who are supportive of the trans community don't have to keep seeing shitty thread titles

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 21/11/2017 23:17

I’d like to identify as being rich.

UrsulaPandress · 21/11/2017 23:20

I self id as a man during the day, so pay rise please.

And Pegasus by night.

lifeisasongworthsinging · 21/11/2017 23:24

I would identify as having a tiny, nipped in waist and bring a a 1940s Diva, glamorous every day. 10 years would only count as 1. Because I say so.

Failing that I would be a pampered, highly bred cat

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 21/11/2017 23:25

Ha. Yeah. Are all these women-identifying men prepared to take a pay cut?

picklemepopcorn · 21/11/2017 23:27

Can I identify as a proper woman?

RaininSummer · 21/11/2017 23:28

I strongly disagree that the viewpoints are narrow minded. Generally there seem to be very reasoned, educated points made. I think a lot of people are very worried that the general population are unaware of the implications and so every new development and political statement will be raised here for discussion.

reallybadidea · 21/11/2017 23:30

I identify as pregnant. I really like maternity clothes and shopping for prams, which is how I know that my brain is pregnant, even if the body I was born was assigned by a doctor as non-pregnant. Because I identify as pregnant I will be taking a full 12 months maternity leave from work. Some people say that this is infringing on the rights of pregnant people, but if I identify as pregnant then I am pregnant. #nodebate

CuppaTeaAndAJammieDodger · 21/11/2017 23:52

How about being a natal woman who identifies as a trans woman, who identifies as a woman - I think I would implode with the meta-ness of it all.

YoloSwaggins · 21/11/2017 23:53

Reminds me of this comment I found on the internet:

If you can be transgendered, transsexual, transracial, and even transspecies why can't i be transfinancial and be treated as the mega wealthy man i truly believe i am??
My bank account does not define me. I am tired of not being allowed to purchase the luxury cars i am entitled to. I am tired of not being able to fly first class, to dine at the most expensive restaurants on the planet. When will my rights as transfinancial man be respected?? #transfinancialman

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 21/11/2017 23:56

Transablism is a thing too. www.abc.net.au/rampup/articles/2011/10/27/3349293.htm

Individualism is fun, eh?

wierd7678 · 22/11/2017 00:39

the most common people identifing with something there not is fat people saying there healthy or people who drink to much saying they dont both much srious and problematic in todays society and for the nhs

shakeyourcaboose · 22/11/2017 07:45

afrikat are you complaining of echo chambers on transactivists sites, or just those that disagree with you?

makeourfuture · 22/11/2017 07:52

If I were to decide that I am now Irish I could keep my EU passport after Brexit?

There absolutely should be a way to keep our EU citizenship. It is an historic stripping away of rights.
