AIBU- que and coffee shop

IronFists234 · 21/11/2017 18:02

I work in a coffee shop, today we had a very long que and two of my team members called in sick. Manager has taken the day off, whole thing is a palava and yes there is a very long que.

Most people were understanding, we had signs up apologising and switched to disposable cups only.

Then the one unhappy person comes along:

After waiting in the que for ten minutes (and not been served yet, so they could leave anytime)

"I'M NOW GOING TO BE LATE TO WORK."

Customer tries to skip the que!

I politely remind customer there is a que, and say sorry, we are short staffed. Please kindly wait and we'll be with you as soon as we can.

Customer stomps off.

AIBU to think if you have to be at work soon, you don't wait in an obviously long air then blame the staff when you start to run late? Hmm

Did you not just say 'que sera, sera'?

BarbaraofSevillle · 21/11/2017 19:08

TBH I’m surprised that large chain coffee shops don’t have a self service machine to use and pay by card

But that wouldn't be the individually barista crafted artisan beverage they are paying for Grin.

ivykaty44 · 21/11/2017 19:09

Large coffee shops status negates the artisan culture somewhat 😂😂

Katinkka · 21/11/2017 19:10

'Que' lolz

orangeoctopus · 21/11/2017 19:14

This is why I use a McDonalds drive through when I want a coffee. Cheap and quick.

ivykaty44 · 21/11/2017 19:15

I have been known to ask the rest of the queue if they mind the customer queue hopping

Never have I been failed by the customers in the queue- there is always one that states they do mind the queue hopper

I then have to ask the queue hopper to return to thee back of the que so politely...with such a sweetly sick smile

FlowerPot1234 · 21/11/2017 19:15

The customer should not have jumped the queue.
The customer is right to express frustration at the unacceptable wait.
The customer is right to be peeved off with your employer for not sorting the situation out/being prepared for when 2 staff members call in sick and rectifying that situation.
The customer is not right to get angry at you; to express to you as the "face" of the business, yes, so that you can communicate this to your superiors, but not to get angry at you or blame you.
You were right to not serve the queue jumping customer.

ChickenVindaloo2 · 21/11/2017 19:33

This is one of the reasons I am so glad that I don't drink tea or coffee. I can't imagine the time wasted by folk standing in queues (!) waiting for wanky drinks as if their lives depended on it.

I must have saved HOURS of my life (and a lot of money) but avoiding Costa etc like the plague.

I'm not a very patient person.

blueyacht · 21/11/2017 19:34

Yes let's all mock OP for the spelling error. Does it give you a nice sense of superiority?

Yes. It's all I've got.

YANBU

it's not something essential to his journey to work like a train ticket, its a cup of bloody coffee!

It's actually humanly possible to go to work without a coffee. I do it every single day in fact! (Admittedly I don't like coffee but still).

You see a long queue when you're cutting it fine time wise and either decide not to bother getting your coffee and get to work on time or decide to get your coffee and be late for work. Annoying but a common enough occurrence and not worth a grown adult having a temper tantrum

ForalltheSaints · 21/11/2017 20:56

I would not be in that situation. I just don't join long queues, I take my business elsewhere.

JonSnowsWhore · 21/11/2017 21:06

I think I'd queue for hours for Costas billionaire's hot chocolate. So the people calling them wanky and slating chain coffee shops are BVU Grin

AnnabellaH · 21/11/2017 21:12

Q-you-ee-you-ee.

Queue.

RoseWhiteTips · 21/11/2017 21:12

Q ue ue

SelenaValentina · 21/11/2017 21:19

At breakfast times, some Premier Inns have a self-serve Costa machine.

Apart from the beautifully shaped chocolate patterning on a capuccino, there seems to my experienced coffee tastebuds very little difference from the wait-for-ages-barista-experience. Why not put in a couple of machines for those in a rush? It would solve the lengthy queues (and I could avoid the people who can't make their mind up even after having waited for ages).

Katinkka · 21/11/2017 21:34

Costa is not good coffee anyway. Too bland and tasteless. They also seem to shaft you on size of drink and number of shots. I prefer independents or cafe nero now but Costa is like shit in a bloody field.

ChickenVindaloo2 · 21/11/2017 22:01

You know nothing, Jon Snow! Grin
(Hot chocolate is the only hot drink I do drink, but only low-cal home made stuff. The stuff you get in poncy shops is usually only lukewarm milk anyway)

chipscheeseandcurrysauce · 21/11/2017 22:07

If it was a life or death situation, I’d understand.

But it’s only coffee 🙄

DotDashBeep · 21/11/2017 22:10

If you know how to spell queue, you spell it that way every time. Not que.

ChickenVindaloo2 · 21/11/2017 22:10

I will be totally honest and say that I (mainly subconsciously) consider folk who buy their breakfast/coffees etc on the run to be a touch slatternly. Wait, hear me out.

If they were organised, hard-working folk, they would be out of bed early, showered, dressed and have a proper, sit-down breakfast before leaving the house.

Folk who leave the house on an empty stomach and buy baked goods and hot drinks and eat and drink on the run are lazy, wasteful, unhealthy, fat, disorganised, vulgar and bad with money. And are probably going to hell.

I blame my mother for instilling such prejudice in me. She made me get washed and dressed and breakfasted before I could open any Santa presents. Grin

ChickenVindaloo2 · 21/11/2017 22:11

IT'S A JOKE
IT'S LIGHTHEARTED
BEFORE YOU ALL POUNCE ON ME, WITH YOUR COSTA-COFFEE-CROISSANT-BE-CRUMBED LIPS!

JonSnowsWhore · 22/11/2017 07:56

Chicken!! I challenge you to say that after you've tried this billionaires hot chocolate!! It's chocolatey, salted caramely, creamy fucking heaven! Mind you if you're used to the low cal stuff then it's probably not for you 😬

ivykaty44 · 22/11/2017 12:39

Costa is ownd by white read who also own other outlets so plnk Costa coffee in them all to boast its business

Coffee seems low quality mass produced and can’t see it would be any different than a self service machine - apart from probably quicker

ChickenVindaloo2 · 22/11/2017 18:48

Jon Snow' Whore! I was with you until I read "salted" - what fuckwittery is this?!! The trouble is if I had a delicious hot choc then my 40 cal one might not seem so great!
