To tell my neighbour that 1130pm is not the time to do washing!!

... or would that be crackers?? Would I come across as weird and controlling?

It's 1130 at night and my upstairs neighbour (live in a flat) has their washing machine on the loudest spin cycle, it feels like our ceiling is shaking. Lying here in bed thinking this is ludicrous but don't want to seem cause a fuss ... it is bizarre to do washing that late, no? They both work 9-5 so it's not because they're on funny shift patterns. It's at least once a week and their kitchen is above our bedroom.

WIBU to say something, politely?

Are the flats privately owned? There may be some conditions about noise. Know folk who had a private flat and there were restrictions on only having solid floor coverings on kitchen bathroom floors to prevent noise. If rented e.g. housing association they too may have restrictions. Other than that would have a word about them obviously not being aware how much noise machine creates. Strange that a bedroom is below someone's kitchen though.

pollymere · 21/11/2017 17:51

We do sometimes, if we realize something we need in the morning hasn't been washed accidentally!

Nothingrhymeswithfamily · 21/11/2017 18:00

I used to do a wash at night when i was on crappy economy 7 as it was so much cheaper (wasn't in a flat though). But i didn't put it on to spin until the morning as that would wake me up.

NootNoot · 21/11/2017 18:01

I often put washing machine on at "abnormal" hours as I work horrid shifts & have a job that often ends up me coming home dirty & his nibs works outdoors.

I once popped downstairs to get an Amazon package from neighbour & I could hear our machine whirring through his ceiling (at this point it was starting to give up). I nearly died. Apologised profusely. He was lovely & said he figured we had stuff needed washing & he learnt to ignore it.

We now have a new machine which is like some silent Dr Who Darlek but I still try & have it "finished" by 9.30pm, or don't put it on before 6.30am ( takes an hour to get to spinning).

I don't think you realise how noisy stuff is until you live under someone.

marymoosmum · 21/11/2017 18:31

I live in an upstairs flat and my washing machine is turned off at 10pm. And doesn't go back on until 8am. It's common courtesy.

KittyKate74 · 21/11/2017 18:37

My neighbours are the same But have no excuse as she's in all day, shakes the whole flat and vibrates pictures, doors and even the fridgefreezer, theres only 2 of them and its on every day and sometimes as many as 4 times in 1 day,let alone the hoovering everyday and stamping and slamming of doors at 5am, gonna end up pulling my hair out.

Smudge100 · 21/11/2017 18:39

YANBU. That’s totally anti social.

mustbemad17 · 21/11/2017 18:40

I'm in an upstairs flat. We actually aren't allowed to use the washing machine past 8pm because of the noise. Luckily my downstairs neighbour is deaf as a doorpost so i get away with it, but I think it's quite rude if you have neighbours underneath who would be disturbed by it

riceuten · 21/11/2017 18:51

I live in a terraced house and wouldn’t dream of putting the washing on later than 9.

Pinkvoid · 21/11/2017 19:21

I’ve done it before now when the DC have been sick in the night but I would be more considerate in a flat.

Sennelier1 · 21/11/2017 19:53

I do think the same, that your neighbours do their washing at night to save a bit on electricity - don't we all! So if you still think you should say something about it, maybe you could gently suggest they put an isolating rubber mat under the machine. That would help cut down the noice. And maybe you could gently ask them to make sure there aren't any objects rattling and shaking on top of the washer or between the washer and the wall.

Thebluedog · 21/11/2017 19:54

I do that too, but I don’t live in a flat. I’d also be aware if I did and wouldn’t put my machine on at 11.30

I’d just mention it nicely and ask, if at all possible, they could put the washing on earlier. I don’t think it’s an unreasonable thing to ask

muthafuzza · 21/11/2017 20:12

It would be weird but if their machine is so loud that you can't sleep then I'd doesn't seem unreasonable to just mention that they are causing a problem. They may be aware of it and not really be able to do it any other time or maybe they don't mid the noise, but if they don't know it's a problem for you then they can't help you. So you can mention it but it doesn't mean they will stop. They could put something against the wall to absorb the sound what I do is put the packaging styrofoam underneath and that stops the sound a bit, but if you have wood floors it probably won't make a huge difference. Don't be nervous about it though sometimes if your nervous it can make things come out in a stressful way that stresse the other person ad makes them react badly, just be friendly and polite about it and hope for the best. If it still continues after you have made them aware of the problem, or f they don't seem apologetic or willing to do something then your just gonna have to live with it or get into an arguement which sucks. That's the reality of living in close proximity to people. Fingers xed they will be nice and put their wash on in the day for you!

YANBU - especially with the quality of many modern flat conversions.

The floors and walls seem to be made of cardboard.

You should definitely mention it.

ReallyJustBloodyDidThat · 21/11/2017 21:05

Ugh, I know what that feels like. My upstairs neighbour has her washing machine on super spin through the night. She also starts vacuuming at 8am, does it at least 5 times a day. Sometimes the last session is at midnight. Sounds like demons from hell dragging their chains around upstairs. Utter nightmare Angry.

browneyes77 · 21/11/2017 21:36

Just to say I can totally empathise.

I live in a flat (rented) and my neighbour upstairs does this too. I don’t think she realises that not only does the spin cycle drive you insane because of the noise, but every time the cycle stops and starts up again it yanks on the pipes and makes a massive clunking noise that shudders through the block.

Liketoshop · 22/11/2017 00:53

I live in a flat and there's an unspoken rule not to put the wm on late evening. Not unreasonable to ask would they mind doing their washing earlier.

Cubtrouble · 22/11/2017 07:40

I do mine at night- almost every night before I go to bed- I don’t have neighbours though.

Maybe your neighbour lived else where before and has never seen it as a problem.

I’d talk to her - nicely

Leapfrog44 · 22/11/2017 10:06

It's not unusual at all. I put mine on last thing or sometimes programme it for 5am so it's done for the morning. But they're probably unaware of the noise so I don't think it's unreasonable to mention it.

JanKind · 22/11/2017 16:12

I put it on at night then it's done by the time O get up. However I always put it on rinse and hold as. A) it stops the noise and B) doesn't come out wrinkled

ferntwist · 22/11/2017 16:39

YANBU - totally unacceptable at that time in a flat or shared house. Definitely say something as she might not realise how loud it is as most people would not be so rude as to do this.

Turquoise123 · 22/11/2017 17:02

say it's shaking and causing you problems and ask that they use the quieter cycles

itshappening · 23/11/2017 02:45

We rent and have a washer dryer which was new when we arrived and is integrated so not obvious how to put anything underneath. The spin cycle is something else! I recorded it, oven door shaking, pans on shelves rattling....and someone who walked in as I was showing the video thought it was a recording of an earthquake! Luckily I think it is above the entrance porch rather than anyone's flat.
