To tell my neighbour that 1130pm is not the time to do washing!!

... or would that be crackers?? Would I come across as weird and controlling?

It's 1130 at night and my upstairs neighbour (live in a flat) has their washing machine on the loudest spin cycle, it feels like our ceiling is shaking. Lying here in bed thinking this is ludicrous but don't want to seem cause a fuss ... it is bizarre to do washing that late, no? They both work 9-5 so it's not because they're on funny shift patterns. It's at least once a week and their kitchen is above our bedroom.

WIBU to say something, politely?

look in your lease/rentsl contract.
when we were in a flat it specified no washing between 10pm and 6am

Jerseysilkvelour · 20/11/2017 09:29

That's fab, just the right outcome!

MajesticWhine · 20/11/2017 09:31

harshbuttrue - surely you don’t “have” to do your washing at night. It’s still a choice. Glad you are not my neighbour with that attitude.

missiondecision · 20/11/2017 09:36

Jeez I can’t believe you said anything. A spin cycle would last max 20 mins.
I get that noise is irritating at times, I’m very introverted and people unwittingly irritate me. But.
Let them do their washing without having to factor in your needs.

InThisTogether · 20/11/2017 09:39

I have an economy 7 tariff so set all my appliances on timers to come on in the early hours.
However I live in a detached house in the middle of nowhere- my nearest neighbours are hundreds of metres away.
Maybe your neighbour has the same tariff as me?

JonSnowsWife · 20/11/2017 10:23

I always put the kids washing/uniforms on after 9/10 at night because the tariff is cheaper than. I live in a house though so maybe the noise doesn't resonate so much. (used to live in a downstairs flat and could hear the bloke upstairs go for a pee most nights).

I wouldn't say something this time no, if it happens again mention it in passing that you can hear it.

JonSnowsWife · 20/11/2017 10:24

Re my 9/10 at night I'm actually seen as quite considerate. There's many times I hear the neighbours spin cycle at midnight or beyond.

BakedBeeeen · 20/11/2017 10:37

I can't believe the entitled attitude of some people! If you live in a flat you have to be a bit considerate. I live in a first floor flat and I wouldn't dream of putting the washing machine on after 9pm, whether it costs a tiny bit less or not!
I am very jealous of people that live in houses and don't hear the day to day noise of other neighbours.
Glad you got things sorted OP, having a quick chat is usually the best way to sort these sort of things. (I agree with a PP, never leave notes, it's so passive aggressive!)

JonSnowsWife · 20/11/2017 10:38

I do hear the day to day noises of my neighbour. Confused

JonSnowsWife · 20/11/2017 10:43

It also doesn't cost 'a tiny bit less', it's considerably less.

Owning your home doesn't automatically mean = no prepayment meters so no tarriffs to worry about. DM used to live in a private rented house (LL owned it outright) it was still on PP. DCs DF lives in private rented, LL is on a BTL mortgage. Despite ExDH having excellent credit rating - it's on prepayment metres.

I know it's hard for some posters to believe bur some people literally do have to eek out their last £3 of emergency until payday (and no you're not all given a magical overnight grace period - with some energy companies when its gone its gone).

Anyway. The OPs sorted it now.

JonSnowsWife · 20/11/2017 10:44

And yes I know they're still tarriffs if you're not on PP but if you are on PP the tarriff is usually going to be higher anyway.

WhiskeySourpuss · 20/11/2017 10:59

I live in an upstairs flat & I know my downstairs neighbour must hear my washing machine as it vibrates my entire flat!

However as I’m out of my house most days between 5:45am & 8pm I have no choice but to either put a wash on at 10pm some nights or set the auto timer to come on at 4:00am so that I can get it out in the morning before I leave - it’s either that or do no washing until a Sunday.

But then I have to listen to her sons godawful guitar practice until 11pm so I don’t feel too bad.

MyDcAreMarvel · 20/11/2017 11:07

"Also I don't think it's a 'privilege' to own our flat "
Of course it is, do you think you work harder than renters?

Lollipop30 · 20/11/2017 11:12

We were in the upstairs flat and I kept doing this due to our work ours etc. Our neighbour did say something, I wasn’t offended but did have to explain that that was our only time to be able to. We did however put two layers of carpet and underlay under the washing machine and he agreed this had definitely helped. Possibly suggest that?

pomadas87 · 20/11/2017 11:18

MyDCaremarvel I didn't suggest that we work harder than renters Confused
I said owning your home isn't a privilege (that suggests it has not been earnt but awarded to you) - it's just a fact that we own it. As do our upstairs neighbours.

We live in a detached house and the washing machine is in the conservatory so wouldn't even disturb the kids, but I wouldn't put a wash on that late as I wouldn't stay up that late to hang it out Blush

Glad you got sorted op Smile

Nomoresugar · 20/11/2017 14:28

I sometimes put on a late wash. Wonder if my neighbours downstairs can hear.

steppemum · 20/11/2017 14:31

In principle it is not strange at all to put on a load late at night, I often stick a load on before bed and hang it up int he morning.

the difference is though, I live in a detached house and the washing machine is on the ground floor.

Just say something to them nicely.

MrsWilbertonsWardrobe · 20/11/2017 17:52

I’m really surprised no-one’s mentioned the fire safety aspect of this issue, especially in the context of living in a flat. There isn’t a fire service in the country that doesn’t strongly advise against running washing machines (plus tumble dryers and dishwashers) overnight.

Here’s one plucked at random (Bucks Fire and Rescue, as it happens): ‘Don’t leave the washing machine, tumble dryer or dishwasher running overnight or while you are out. They are a fire risk because of their high wattage, friction and motors.’

I speak as someone who once had a six-month-old appliance literally go ‘bang!’, with accompanying acrid smoke, in the room next to where my child was sleeping. I just happened to be walking past when it happened - made me jump out of my skin -but at least was able to immediately switch it off and disconnect it from the power supply.

Wouldn’t have been able to do that if l’d been asleep.

PiffleandWiffle · 20/11/2017 20:36

Trouble is, when you're all at work all day, the only time you can do the washing is at night - it especially makes sense if you're on Economy 7.

We do it so it's finished in the morning & can be hung up. Dishwasher is emptied in the morning too...

Smoke Detectors are the key (we're in a house, not a flat FWIW)

EvilDoctorBallerinaRoastDuck · 20/11/2017 20:39

I tend to do my washing early in the morning on a Saturday, as I have to take DD to a class at 8.40, and the DC wouldn't have any uniforms otherwise. We have no tumble dryer. I try to leave it until after 6. Blush

Crunchymum · 20/11/2017 20:42

I'm top maisonette and only time I've ever out washing on at night is after one of the kids had been sick.

Very infrequent and I always message the neighbours the next day to apologise (our kitchen is above their kitchen anyway but still)

ReverseGiraffe · 20/11/2017 20:46

I live in a downstairs flat and often have my washing machine on overnight. My upstairs neighbours' bedroom is above mine, though, so I doubt they can hear it. Not had a complaint in 5 years except for when my boiler was broken and making a clunking noise that they could hear and we couldn't... It sometimes is a case of genuine ignorance!
If my kitchen was below their bedroom I'd not use it overnight.

starzig · 20/11/2017 20:58

I sometimes have a wash on late just cause I get home late and don't want it sitting in the machine all day. I leave for work as soon as I am up too so couldn't do it before work.

Louiselouie0890 · 20/11/2017 21:31

We put a foam matt under ours neighbours didn't hear a thing
