I can "bloody answer" if I want to as its a public forum thanks. To say I don't get why it matters how much other people spend. And to say judgey folk will arrive to judge how much people spend.

Getsorted21 · 20/11/2017 11:19

I disagree that is jealousy or only spending what you can afford. I could never envisage spending 1k on my 6 yr old. Granted I'm not there yet so who knows what it will be like. I wasn't judging the poster who did spend that much, I just couldn't think of what they would be buying.

Creambun2 · 20/11/2017 11:22

£1000 on a yr old is disgusting and the very definition of spoilt

twinkledag · 20/11/2017 11:27

£100 on DS who is 3.

£10-15 on family members - Mum, 2 sisters, 2 brothers, SIL and 3 BIL (One sister remarried).

I usually buy for 3 friends’ children, try and keep that around £5-10.

I buy for around 5 friends, around £10-15

2 work colleagues £5-10.

OH’s family only small so we spend a lot on his Mum, maybe £50-70. Around £20-30 on SIL and BIL.

Hmmm quite a lot now I add it up!

Creambun2 · 20/11/2017 11:29

fresh "kids happy, mum's happy" strayed over from netmums hun?

roobrr · 20/11/2017 11:30

Not disgusting, nor are my children spoilt.
He would be all over it if someone gave him a toy from the poundshop, same as he would be with the xbox! He's grateful for everything. The other one is too young to have an opinion on anything as yet.
Have to think at this point it doesn't matter what I'm going to say as someone will criticise it.

OnceUponACock · 20/11/2017 11:34

No children

Budget for DH: No real budget but we usually end up spending about £300 on each other.

Nieces and nephews: £20 each

DH's siblings and their partners: £20 each (I don't think we should be buying for them but that's a whole other thread

My mum: £200

PILs: £200 between them

LagunaBubbles · 20/11/2017 11:38

Roobr you dint have to justify it. There will always be people on these threads who will criticise and judge. And who can't understand you can spoil your children with lots of presents without them being spoilt, and enjoy family time all at the same time.

FreshHerbs · 20/11/2017 11:50

Some getting their knickers in a twist here.
Where’s the Xmas spirit
Ho ho ho !!!!!

Thank you Laguna

Just feels quite the backlash for what is me (being honest!) and getting my kids the things they like.
I wouldn't dream of saying to someone you're spending too little or too much.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 20/11/2017 12:00

For us it depends on what the individuals want.

We spent about £750 on DS last year, £100 on each of my parents, £50 on my grandmother and the same on my sister. We bought DSS a watch he wanted for £150, and DS bought him some aftershave.

This year, it will be much more modest as DS only wants a tripod for his camera and a new hoodie, but we have planned to pay for DSS and his fiancee to go away for the weekend.

astoundedgoat · 20/11/2017 12:11

We're hoping to budget £150 for everyone this year. Luckily MIL is extremely generous, so the children will get plenty - she will probably spend about £400 on the two of them, and they definitely don't notice what comes from whom.

We just don't have that sort of money this year. £40 - £50 for IL's, £40 for my Dad, £20 each for the children and then something like a computer game for DH & I.

I enjoy Christmas, but the expectation that we should be spending hundreds and hundreds of ££ makes me feel sick and anxious.

We have other things that we spend our money on throughout the year, and I think we are very very lucky in a number of ways, so we're not ALWAYS living on the clippings of tin, but we're saving for a car this year, and I'd rather every spare £100 went on that.

LordSugarWillSeeYouNow · 20/11/2017 12:29

Ds isn't getting a television worth 4K, it's the type of television he wants that is called a 4K television, think it's something to do with the enhanced quality Grin

Price for a mid range one is about £500

goose1964 · 20/11/2017 13:33

We used to budget £50 fire main and £25 for extras plus stocking. However we have inherited 2 children in law and 4 grandsons, and as we both have health issues income is higher so this year it's £25 per person,or £50 a couple

goose1964 · 20/11/2017 13:33

Meant lower

LunasSpectreSpecs · 20/11/2017 13:38

It’s Xmas, kids happy mums happy

Oh please. That's as bad as "ur kid ur rulez, huns". Those of us who are grown ups are aware that that particular trite little soundbite means nothing.

We could choose to spend thousands on each child should we want to. We choose not to. I really don't think constantly comparing what you're spending againsst what everyone else is spending is particularly healthy and as everyone's circumstances are so different the comparisons are meaningless anyway.

blinkineckmum · 20/11/2017 13:45

I have a large family and don't budget, so it is interesting for me to add this up now:

3 x DC. Around £80 each (£240)
10 x nieces and nephews: £15 each (£150)
2 x sets of parents £30 each (£60)
Siblings and partners x 6: £20 each (£180)
Friends x 5: £10: (£50)
Childminders etc x 3: £20 each (£60)
Friends' kids x 4: £5 each (£20)

That's over £800. And after bills and childcare I officially have about £100 a month. Not sure how I manage it, or how to cut down!

Kenworthington · 20/11/2017 13:48

Hmm well I don’t really do a budget for the kids as such but I have 3, they are all teenagers so it tends to be if one has something expensive then I make up the others to cost roughly the same eg last year I got ds2 an Xbox so that was about £350 so I spent the same each on all of them plus stockings
This year not so much it was a spendy xmas last year
This year
Dc £130 each (they have three gifts each this year) plus approx £50 each on stockings
Plus ds1 is currently living with his bf so I have also done them a pre Christmas hamper £30 plus will buy them a xmas tree £10 both to be delivered start of dec
Dss £100?? Not bought anything yet!
Dh approx £150
My mum £70
My dad £10 (he’s in a care home so not much he can use)
Pil £60 - have made a hamper- they’re very hard to buy for
Sil £50 - hamper
Dcat £10 !
Best mate £30

NeverTwerkNaked · 20/11/2017 13:48

blinkin do you want to cut down? You are spending a lot on people you really don’t need to give to..childminders- cut to £5? Parents cut to £20? Friends/friends kids- agree not to buy and just do something nice together? Siblings - suggest secret Santa? Or spend less? That’s a huge amount to be spending if you don’t have much spare. Don’t feel obliged to.

deptfordgirl · 20/11/2017 13:57

Between £10-20 for family members. Dh has a big family and they are close so we get presents for his cousins and their children and aunties and uncles so it can get quite pricey. Usually more like £30 for my mum and dad because they never buy anything for themselves so I like to get something they need.

We just have one ds who is 2 so only about £50 on him as he gets a lot from dh's family and he's very young.

About £100 on dh. He also never buys anything for himself throughout the year so this is often something he needs like a coat.

EvilDoctorBallerinaRoastDuck · 20/11/2017 13:59

6yo and 10yo £40 each
27yo £20
Other family members £10
Family members' pets £2
