My friend works in statistics and research where she covers infection control and disease outbreaks. She told me from where she's sitting, there are fewer d&v outbreaks in private schools.

(This is not official research, just something she has observed.)

She thinks it's because parents don't think twice about keeping their children off an extra day if they are ill because they don't get penalised and because private schools generally have more money to do a regular deep clean and educate and enforce kids to wash hands after toilet and before eating.

Does this sound like bullshit to you?

When there's a d&v outbreak at my dds private school, they ramp up the hygiene protocols. They put antibacterial handwash in every classroom and pupils have to use it as they enter and leave. They also remind the children constantly to wash their hands and show the younger ones the correct technique.

They have a team of cleaners normally but when there's an outbreak they also bring in specialist cleaning companies.

I do have to say though - for many parents it's perfectly easy to keep the children off school for as long as necessary. Either there's a SAHP or one or both are employed at a level where there's greater flexibility for time off.

Parents who have access to more resources; eat better during pregnancy and the little ones have a head start right from conception. There is a clear relationship between poverty and illness of all kinds at all stages and ages.
