What’s happened to supermarket prices today?

Went to Tesco and coop today and there’s a noticeable increase in prices on almost everything. What’s happened, or is it just my perception?

Brexit is everyones excuse to put up prices. Food prices haven't been high for years, now theres a great excuse for everyone to put up prices, even uk suppliers. Bad weather abroad has had alot to do with it too.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 18/11/2017 20:15

Of course, ontherightpath, it's never just one cause, but at the moment the greatest uncertainty is courtesy of Brexit.

educationforlife · 18/11/2017 20:16

Can't link, but this is what the FT article concludes:

"Rising prices have been the most visible economic result of the UK’s vote to leave the EU last year. The sharp fall in the pound following the referendum has led to consumer prices rising at a faster rate in the UK than in other advanced economies."
mumisnotmyname · 18/11/2017 20:18

As has been said before Brexit, it isn't going to get better.

MyOtherProfile · 18/11/2017 20:19

"my spread is the same price it's been for ages and diesel £1.06"
Wow where do you get your diesel? I'm coming round to buy mine because you can't get it for less than 1.23 anywhere round here.

fairgame84 · 18/11/2017 20:21

Milk has gone up by 5p since I bought it last week. Meat is the same though.
I noticed a while back that everything seemed to go up so I shopped down a brand where I could. I already make everything from scratch so will struggle to make further savings on the food shop.

AngryGinger · 18/11/2017 20:21

We spent £60 in Lidl for a ahopntjat would normally be about £37-£40 just last Saturday. We didn’t buy anything special. There’s only 2 of us and neither of us were sure if we were imagining it.

AngryGinger · 18/11/2017 20:22

A shop that that should say! Sorry! The wine remains the same price hic*

AngryGinger · 18/11/2017 20:23

Can’t get petrol for less than 118 here, love to know where fuel is cheaper!

Floralnomad · 18/11/2017 20:23

I’ve not noticed Tesco prices going up , and they still have loads of stuff on offer that we buy regularly like Volvic flavoured water . I paid £1.90 for butter today , but that’s because it’s the brand I like . Things like chicken breasts , 5% mince , milk etc is the same price it’s been for months .

notthe1Parrot · 18/11/2017 20:24

No need to put butter in a sandwich - we use half-fat own-brand mayo, and no one has ever noticed. Saves a fortune on butter!

ChunkyNotSoKitKat · 18/11/2017 20:24

Those asking about UK goods and therefore not effected by brexit will also have transport costs just as the supermarkets do and the price of fuel is rising. Other factors such as the constantly increasing minimum wage and employers forced into providing worked placed pensions affect the retail price as companies are not prepared to absorb these costs.

Might help curb the epidemic of obesity in the UK....... every cloud has a silver lining Smile

dataandspot · 18/11/2017 20:27

Petrol 112 in Sainsburys Thanet

TatianaLarina · 18/11/2017 20:28

Utilities like fuel are priced in dollars so companies here lose on the exchange rate.

expatinscotland · 18/11/2017 20:29

Oh, yeah, semi-starvation is such a silver lining.

sirfredfredgeorge · 18/11/2017 20:31

Butter is not Brexit (in France you struggle to buy butter at all because the prices are fixed once a year - www.economist.com/news/europe/21730877-forget-about-making-croissants-margarine-french-are-fretting-over-sudden-butter )

Most of the food increase is due to lower pound though.

fairgame84 · 18/11/2017 20:32

floral I shop at Tesco. Their pure milk has gone up from 1.25 to 1.30 in one week.

Oakmaiden · 18/11/2017 20:36

Tescos bakery bread is now £1:10 instead of £1. I commented on this today when I went shopping with dh. That is actually 10%, which is huge, really...

mumisnotmyname · 18/11/2017 20:39

Also I believe that commodities markets are run in dollars which means that even if wheat for weatabix for example is grown very close to the factory it will still cost more because of the devaluation of the pound compared to the dollar. I am not an economics expert so could well be corrected.

Happydoingitjusttheonce · 18/11/2017 20:49

Thanks all. I do price check everything and thought at first it was because Tesco have changed the font on their shelf labels, now really big and bold but then noticed in the shampoo aisle, the brands like Elvive, Dove all seemed to be £3 per bottle. I voted remain...

Whilst I do believe Brexit will fuck us royally, isn't it a case of everything going up in price about 4-6 weeks before Christmas?

RandomMess · 18/11/2017 20:51

Large UK firms now have to pay the apprenticeship levy so their pay costs have gone up in the last 12 months to cover that!

abilockhart · 18/11/2017 20:52

If food prices double, I'm sure Jacob Rees Mogg and Boris Johnson will still be well able to pay for their weekly shop. They have nothing to worry about.

SukiTheDog · 18/11/2017 20:53

Sainsbury’s has sneaked 25p here and 50p there on everything we buy. It’s really noticeable.
