To think I should get some free coffee from this coffee chain?!

I went to a popular coffee chain today in my lunch break for a quiet coffee and a few minutes to myself (and to read Mumsnet on my phone!). I got my coffee, sat down and tried to pull my chair forward, but the chair had a slightly loose leg and it pinched my finger hard between the leg and the base of the chair. It really hurt! Then it started bleeding and I had to go and get a plaster from the server at the till.

They got me the plaster and took the chair away, but I have to say they weren't particularly apologetic (in fact I don't remember them apologising at all), nor did they check that I was OK. It still hurt over an hour later and made driving back to work quite tricky.

So, AIBU to think I deserve a voucher for some free coffee from the chain for my trouble?! And if so how is best to go about asking for it?

Please note I'm not angry, am not going to sue them, I'm not a hysterical angry customer and I know it was just an accident. I just think, given that it was entirely their fault, they should at least give me a couple of free drinks to make up for it!

What does MN think?

Dear god, everyone expects a freebie now. It was an accident.

RhiannonOHara · 16/11/2017 16:06

I wouldn't write or tweet or otherwise follow it up, but I do think it would have been worth their while as a goodwill gesture to offer a coffee on the house.

It wasn't Pret, was it? I hope not because I love Pret, in an almost weirdly intense way, Grin and think their staff are all lovely, and like to imagine that they'd give me a coffee AND a pastry if that happened to me in one of their branches.

amusedbush · 16/11/2017 16:07

I cut my finger reaching in to the fridge thing for a sandwich at Starbucks a few years ago and they sized up my drink for free and gave me a voucher for next time.

I hadn't expected a thing - all I'd asked for was a plaster! It was nobody's fault and I was a bit drunk because it was my 21st birthday and I'd been day drinking with friends not angry or upset.

The80sweregreat · 16/11/2017 16:09

They could have offered you a drink , but maybe it was just really busy and they didnt think of it? At least they took the faulty chair away!

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 16/11/2017 16:16

This is ridiculous, truly ridiculous. Wanting free stuff because you hurt your finger is just grabby.

And of course they didn't offer you another drink at the time. You already had one!

They reacted in the correct way; they got you a plaster and they removed said offensive chair.

missiondecision · 16/11/2017 16:19

Don’t be silly.

Cauliflowercheede · 16/11/2017 16:21

But there was nothing wrong with the coffee you ordered.

Maybe the DM will pick this up though and you’ll get a free one that way.

missiondecision · 16/11/2017 16:21

You want free stuff cos you hurt your ickle finger ??

FluffyNinja · 16/11/2017 16:33

They're a business making money (not paying taxes) so they should have apologised and recorded the incident in the accident book.
I'd definitely contact head office and make a complaint and hope the staff get some proper training.
They caused the problem. A free coffee is the least they can do. Hmm

momo142 · 16/11/2017 16:39

Did people read the bit where I admit it was just an accident and I wasn't a hysterical customer?!

Yes, I'm trying to get something for free. What wrong with that?! They're a global corporation (and yes, a tax dodging one). I'm only after ~£10 voucher. I fully appreciate its not a big deal.

No, no entry in an accident book.

elephunk - Out of interest momo142, I always imagine that people like you are confused about when to use 'yourself', 'myself' etc. Correct? wtf?? My grammar is perfectly fine, thank you very much. Quite what that has to do with my OP I don't know.

FluffyNinja
How do you know they are not paying tax?
And what is "proper training"?

oldmum22 · 16/11/2017 16:41

Oh dear ....

bottlesandcans · 16/11/2017 16:41

Get over yourself

dantdmistedious · 16/11/2017 16:42

I don't think the injury warrants something free even if it is only a cup of coffee.

bottlesandcans · 16/11/2017 16:43

i'm only after £10
Maybe you should be after a bit of decorum dear?

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 16/11/2017 16:44

I suppose people who are suspected of grammatical errors deserve everything coming to them, including squashed fingers? Grin

OP I think you missed your moment. You could have asked for a free refill at the time maybe because yours has gone cold with all the chair faffing?
That horse has bolted now though.

MorningstarMoon · 16/11/2017 16:44

Yabu

expatinscotland · 16/11/2017 16:46

You have more front than Sainsbury's.

CoolCarrie · 16/11/2017 16:48

Same thing happened to my mil and she lost the tip of her finger, she has had to have plastic surgery to repair the damage, was in a great deal of pain, and is waiting for a settlement from the large company as the chair was broken. If it had been a small child they could have lost the whole finger, as the edge was so sharp. You should get more than a free coffee !

BatteredBreadedOrSouthernFried · 16/11/2017 16:53

Responses on this thread are fucking hilarious. 😂

She wants free coffee, not shares in the company!

RainyApril · 16/11/2017 17:02

OP, I’d ignore all the responses suggesting you’re a freeloader.

They were idiots because you hurt yourself and it was their fault, yet they did absolutely nothing to make you feel better.

You came out with a bleeding finger, and now you probably feel like you won’t go there again because they didn’t care about you as a customer, and you’re going to tell everyone about it too.

They could’ve checked you were ok and brought you a coffee, and you’d have walked out happy.

The training I referred to earlier is in customer service and retention, what to do if something similar happens again.

You didn’t want a load of free stuff, you wanted to feel like they gave a shit.

Bonez · 16/11/2017 17:04

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 16/11/2017 17:05

Some people are always on the make Hmm. Exactly how would a £10 voucher "make up" for you needing a plaster for your finger?

RestingBitchFaced · 16/11/2017 17:05

You already had a coffee, why would they offer you another one?

RhiannonOHara · 16/11/2017 17:07

PRECISELY this. PRECISELY. It's all about customer goodwill.
