Bed delivery

TerribleTime · 16/11/2017 07:07

I have ordered a new bed and arranged delivery for next week.

The delivery confirmation email says that the bed will be delivered to my doorstep and won't be taken upstairs.

Is this normal nowadays? I won't be able to carry a divan bed up the stairs on my own.

Most people surely have their bedrooms upstairs - do companies seriously expect customers to carry the beds upstairs?

It'll come in sections. Take it up one section at a time.

Cactusjelly00 · 16/11/2017 07:16

I'm not sure why you expected anything different?
It was usual in the late 80's, 90's and every time I've bought a bed since (and had it delivered)?

Cactusjelly00 · 16/11/2017 07:17

By the way, beds don't come assembled either (hope that isn't a shock!) so you can carry it up and down in pieces.

yowerohotesies · 16/11/2017 07:18

We bought a new bed recently and we checked before paying that the delivery would include bringing it all upstairs. Sounds like your supplier is the ryanair of bed shops. You could offer the delivery person an additional cash tip to bring it upstairs. £15 or so should be enough.

TerribleTime · 16/11/2017 07:21

Thanks. I suppose I just assumed that the bed would be delivered to the intended room.

My previous bed was bought from ikea and was a frame bed so I could carry it up bit by bit. Perhaps I have been naive - I'd better get myself to the gym to get my arm strength up before it is delivered. Wink

Divan sections are quite lightweight but bulky.

Ifailed · 16/11/2017 07:23

it'll probably be delivered by a 3rd party courier company who will be expected to make 10s of drops each day and therefore the driver wont have time to help out.

Albertschair · 16/11/2017 17:30

My next mattress delivered to upstairs. Well they took it away after I stupidly didn't check it could get upstairs. And then delivered a divan base that broke into 4 pieces not two. And delivered to upstairs.

I had to fix the 4 pieces together. Easier than I thought it would be (all parts supplied).

I paid them extra to take the old one away.

I don't remember it costing more to deliver to upstairs.

Same as when I ordered a fridge from ao.com. They delivered to kitchen not to front door step (important as it was the heaviest fridge imaginable)

coddiwomple · 16/11/2017 17:36

It's good to know! All furniture I ever had delivered so far - Ikea included - were always brought to the right floor and the right room. I wouldn't have expected someone to drop everything on the front door.

SilverSpot · 16/11/2017 17:38

Normal.

If you give the two delivery people a fiver each they will prob take it upstairs.

Divan will come in two pieces tho. and if you take the drawers out it will be very light and totally fine to do on your own drawer by drawer then each divan half.

GraciesMansion · 16/11/2017 17:44

We had a bed delivered last week and there was only the driver who then needed some help to remove it from the van!

christmaspudding1 · 16/11/2017 17:49

Argos did this to me,i was not happy

id try and bung the a tenner,im sure that will fix the problem

christmaspudding1 · 16/11/2017 17:50

i did wander would they take it to the front door of a first floor flat,no lift??

Welshmaenad · 16/11/2017 18:39

I don't think it's normal. Whenever I've bought Beds delivery has included taking it to the correct room and assembling/unpacking it.

bigbluebus · 16/11/2017 19:07

I haven't bought a bed recently but I have bought 1 double wardrobe - for an upstairs bedroom, a 3 piece suite and a dining room table, 6 chairs and a large cabinet. All have been delivered to the specified rooms. The wardrobe was from a cheap end of lines shop and I paid £15 to have it delivered. I was told it would be in 2 sections and they would put it back together. The 2 chaps came in, checked out where it was going and decided they could get it in whole - including getting it around the bannister at the top of the stairs. They had millimeters to spare!

wonkylegs · 16/11/2017 19:30

My friend had this problem the other week it wasn't the base that was the problem it was the stupidly heavy mattress. Her husband is working away in another country so my DH ended up helping her upstairs with it (I offered but logistically it needed someone taller and stronger than me) or she was sleeping in the hall for the next few months. After that I checked our new one is definitely being delivered to our room and the old one taken away.
It really depends on the company.

EmilyChambers79 · 16/11/2017 19:47

Our bed came from Dreams and they took it upstairs for us. They took our old bed too. We had to assemble it ourselves.

Who have you had the bed from?

MarshaBradyo · 16/11/2017 19:49

Depends who you use I guess. We had it taken up stairs and assembled. Plus the old one removed.

MarshaBradyo · 16/11/2017 19:49

The mattress is incredibly heavy so definitely get them to take that up

Paddington68 · 16/11/2017 19:51

Dreams delivered mine unpacked it and took the rubbish away. Tell them you will cancel unless they put it in your bedroom. The very idea.

littlehandcuffs · 16/11/2017 20:35

M&S bed coming in January, delivered upstairs, put together and the packaging taken away....I couldn't physically do it myself.

ICanNeverThinkOfAGoodUsrname · 16/11/2017 20:48

I think it depends on the company and probably their insurance.

TerribleTime · 16/11/2017 21:14

Sorry, I hadn't realised that the thread had more replies. The bed is from Littlewoods being delivered by arrow xl.

I messaged Littlewoods on Facebook and they have not really answered the question of whether the bed will be taken upstairs. I will struggle to get a divan upstairs without assistance. I just assumed if you are paying for a bed and delivery it would be delivered to the room in which the bed will be kept.

Even ikea got it upstairs for us.

ItsNachoCheese · 16/11/2017 21:18

I got my bed from the local bed shop, delivery men carried it upstairs and assembled it for me. I paid an extra £20 for it to be built. Best £20 as it saved me the hell of furniture building 😂
