To be upset about going back on the Fodmap diet

AnnoyedALot · 15/11/2017 21:54

I was diagnosed with a bowel disease a couple of years ago. I revisited the consultant recently to get advice on my medicine/symptoms and he has diagnosed me with IBS as well.

Worse still, he is sending me to a dietician to try the fodmap diet. I gratefully agreed as I need to get my bowel under control again.

But I have already tried this diet years ago and it was awful. Most of the stuff I should eat was out of our budget. So I ended up eating a tiny limited diet. I was so miserable.

Is there anything I can do to make it bearable or affordable this time around ?

be careful with the celery and the green bits of the leek.

When I was put on FODMAP 16 months ago both of these things were on the red list, I note that they're now considered acceptable but celery in any form (powder, extract, tiny bit of actual celery) and any leek at all massively make my condition flare up.

You can also microwave your sweet potatoes whole or use them to make mash. Just scoop out the cooked potato from the skin and mash up in a bowl.

I have decided I don't need to do it 100% right until I meet the nutrient lady. So I am going to avoid my standard oils and dairy and add avoiding garlic and onions for the time being. But sticking to the test of my standard food..so I can actually eat.

I will give myself time to adjust and try and plan for when I have to do it 100% properly. I will replace pasta and soy sauce with GF types.

I am definitely going to try the sweet potato toast link. That does sound nice.

I am relieved to be going slowly into this.

annoyed I know you may not have the same experience as me but since sticking to fodmap, with the dieticians support, I've been able to come off all meds (steroids, codeine, loperamide and that powder for bile salt malabsorption), I'm no longer being told I may have ME or that stress causes my symptoms, I can get up and leave the house like the average person and so on...

Fodmap IS extremely hard, I still make mistakes and grieve the loss of foods I used to love, however good mental and physical health feels like a miracle that makes it more than worth it. It's such good news that the NHS is setting up fodmap clinics in more and more hospitals Smile

Bloomed · 16/11/2017 17:54

That's really good to hear wiserical. How long did it take to feel much better?

Bloomed · 16/11/2017 17:55

Ansumpasty · 16/11/2017 17:59

I hated it.

Take CBD oil. Trust me!

Wisterical · 16/11/2017 18:02

Thanks bloomed. Within a fortnight all my bowel symptoms had (magically, it felt) disappeared and I'd stopped having to constantly sit down/have naps throughout the day and before a month had passed I was full of energy with no more brain fog. It's been astonishing.

Bloomed · 16/11/2017 18:10

That sounds great wisterical. Really interesting that it has such strong mental effects too.

Candlelight234 · 16/11/2017 18:14

I also have IBD & IBS and bile salt malabsorption. I know how miserable these damn diseases are without having to do shitty Fodmap on top.
However I've done fodmap too, I would suggest stretching the budget if you at all can and buying a bag of GF pasta & GF couscous along with normal stuff for your family, and only you use the GF stuff. From Sainsbury's GF pasta is £1.33 and huge box of GF couscous for £2. I reckon I can get 5 portions out of each. Also garlic infused oil is £2 from Morrisons and lasts for months, I only use sparing though as I can still react to this. Also bananas are v cheap and fodmap friendly - good luck Op it is crappy.

Bloomed · 16/11/2017 18:17

Ansumpasty details please! Which one etc?

There’s a link for nutritional yeast flakes OP

OP, it sounds like you have a lot of food issues rr fussiness/preference for certain tastes and textures in addition to the diatary requirements of FODMAPs. I would suggest you try hypnosis or EFT/tapping for these issues as it may massively open the foods you are capable of eating. Good luck

AnnoyedALot · 16/11/2017 18:53

Wisterical What a brilliant result ! I hope it works as well for me !

Popes into Iceland and I have got OXO chicken stock cubes for my soup they have wheat but no onion or garlic. I will try and get to Sainsbury later in the week to get a wheat free one.

I also got mixed spice and paprika spices to try eith rice to try. Lastly I got a light 1 cal coconut oil spray for cooking eggs.

Plus a pizza with no onion and garlic just wheat. Might as well enjoy some nice food while I can.

I get GF pizza bases they are quite expensive though (£3 for 2 bases). If you find you can tolerate a bit of cheese once you've done elimination, they are great with tomato pasta, drop of garlic infused oil and a bit of asafoetida, topped with ham & tomato.

Candlelight234 · 16/11/2017 19:05

Tomato paste - not pasta.

Ansumpasty · 16/11/2017 19:22

I have recently starting taking Endoca 3% CBD oil drops. I really don't want to jinx myself but I'm astonished at how much better I am. Nothing has worked for me and I hated the low FODMAP diet. Spinach/lettuce, tomatoes and corn are my main triggers...if you exclude these from the diet, it doesn't leave an awful lot left over! I got upper abdominal pains because I was basically starving myself. Most GF stuff that I could find in the likes of Sainsbury's contained a lot of corn/maize.

There's a Facebook group called CBD users UK and people have had such brilliant results when using it for IBS/IBD. It's the best thing I've ever tried.

Bloomed · 17/11/2017 00:11

That's interesting. I've seen it in Holland and Barrett but not that brand or strength. How quickly did you see a change ?

YesThisIsMe · 17/11/2017 00:49

While checking whether my brilliant ideas for flavour enhancers passed the FODMAP Test (they didn’t) I found this quite useful list www.thecleancoconut.com/low-fodmap-flavour-options/ .

It does sound like a really tough set of restrictions, with the money being perhaps the worst (otherwise I’d suggest eating ready cooked chicken breast and smoked salmon with every meal) but I’m sure that you can sort it out if your DH helps out. The huge recent boost in GF food should help you a lot as well.

TwoShades1 · 17/11/2017 02:45

Having read the lists I’m not sure why it wouldn’t cause you to have a very restricted diet? I understand it will make eating out, takeaways and convenience food hard. But looking at the foods it can be done very cheaply and most of the meal I cook on a daily basis could be modified to suit. Also don’t understand why you don’t just do it for the whole family if you the one cooking? My family is had low carb dinners and is predominantly gluten free with minimal red meat and virtually no processed meats. I certainly wouldn’t start making separate meals each evening!

Ansumpasty · 17/11/2017 07:13

I ordered it online from The Hemp Wellness Centre and started very low, 1 drop, 3 times a day and then up to 2 for the first week. I honestly noticed an improvement by day 2.

AnnoyedALot · 17/11/2017 09:42

Great flavour list. I have saved that one :)

TwoShades1
I don't cook and have other restrictions.

"I don't cook and have other restrictions."

You can change the first, but obviously you can't change the second. I know it is hard, but you really do need to change your mindset on "I don't/won't/can't cook" YouTube is your friend.
