So my ex husband (those of you who have seen my posts before will know he is emotionally abusive and controlling) has decided it is appropriate to let the boys play grand theft auto. They are 5 and 6.

Ffs

The youngest must of mentioned it at school today as he said his teacher has said he shouldn't play it!

Aibu to speak to her tomorrow to let her know they do it at their dads not mine and see if she will raise it?

I've messaged him but no reply as yet.

the rape etc in GTA

There’s no rape in gtaConfused

Mamabear14 · 14/11/2017 20:59

Ok, not by the lawful definition. But I think if you can assault a hooker after you've fucked her and steal your money back then you're treading a pretty fine line. Game or not.

Runlovingmummy81 · 14/11/2017 21:08

Either way it's not suitable!

Pretty sure there is rape in GTA contrary to what other pp have said.

mrsBeverleyGoldberg · 14/11/2017 21:27

My dad decided it was okay for ds1 aged 6+ to play grand theft auto as a driving game. What about the prostitutes and hits? Even after telling him no he carried on. We don’t see him anymore. Not just because of this.
You are doing exactly the right thing. They’re lucky to have a good mum.

DeleteOrDecay · 14/11/2017 22:42

Have you ever played it? Because I have. And I can categorically confirm that there is no rape in the main story or otherwise. ‘Hookers’ are an optional part of the open world game and aren’t the only non playable characters you can kill and steal money from.

I totally agree that the game isn’t suitable for children at all but I wish people wouldn’t keep spreading incorrect information. It’s scaremongering, and it’s not the only game with violent and some times sexual content.

crazycatgal · 14/11/2017 23:13

@shhhfastasleep There is no rape in GTA.

However it does contain: sex, prostitutes, mindless violence, murder and torture and definitely isn’t suitable for children. I wouldn’t allow a child under 16 to play it.

shhhfastasleep · 15/11/2017 06:12

Women as prostitutes. No context as to why they are there. providing “services “ to game players. In the real world this is as likely to be rape as anything else. In the absence of a detailed discussion about sex workers and consent. Which you can’t have with a small child.

Runlovingmummy81 · 15/11/2017 06:25

I've had a sensible age appropriate discussion with the boys and told them they shouldn't be playing it. I've said they need to let their dad know that next time he puts it on for them.

Ill keep you updated on the school's response.

I'm disgusted with him.

Many people don't consider prostitution to be rape so blithely saying there's rape in gta on that basis is wrong.

If you haven't played the game how do you think you can tell people for sure what's in it? Also people who let their young children play it are not very good parents. Preteens and year 8s should not be playing this game

shhhfastasleep · 15/11/2017 07:59

I have watched someone play the game. They were repulsed by the treatment of women and moved away from that “scenario “.
No sex working is not rape. But sometimes it is. It is a complex area and hardly suitable for children.

Runlovingmummy81 · 15/11/2017 08:07

I don't understand why he can't just buy them a game that is suitable, there's lots of choice for kids that they would enjoy.

You can report this to social services if you think he won't stop letting them play it... or should I say putting it on for them to play. After all, he's the one in control and has made them aware that this game exists.

I would explain the situation to the teacher and let her know that it's not you, it's him. She may already have made a referral based on what's been said.

I'm fine with adults playing GTA as they're capable of understanding what is being simulated, but any child (young teen, preteen or under 10) doesn't have this ability and we don't know if it will have an impact on them.

As for rape, using a prostitute then beating and robbing them is treading the line on rape and I would be interested to see whether it would be legally classed as such. After all, the prostitutes intention is to swap sex for money (which she is giving consent for on that basis) whereas the characters intention is to have sex without paying. Had the prostitute known his intent then should would not consent to sex.

Runlovingmummy81 · 15/11/2017 08:14

I'm going to speak to the teachers today. The head will reply too she's really good. So hopefully we can stop this abusive behaviour.

It's a brilliant game, as are all the GTA games. Only an idiot would let children play it.

Runlovingmummy81 · 15/11/2017 08:26

He is an idiot in lots of ways. Lol.

Sheitgeist · 15/11/2017 09:02

Bloody hell, that's awful.
Well done OP, I'm so glad you've brought this up with school. Hopefully your young children's GTA playing days are numbered.
Heck, I felt bad buying it for my son for Christmas when it came out... and he was 22 at the time! awesome game though

Your ex sounds like a complete and utter tool

Runlovingmummy81 · 15/11/2017 17:04

I have spoken with his teacher and she was as horrified as me. She is going to speak to exh about it too and her concerns. Yet to hear from the head teacher.

That isn't a specifically designed part of the game. Any choice a player makes to do that is exactly that - their choice. The game allows you to do it because it allows you to commit violence against anyone - but it's not a mission or something the game makes or encourages you to do. That's the player.
