to be annoyed by being paid for work via a pocketmoney card?

Just want to see if I am being unreasonable here.

I've picked up a job as a Christmas Temp at Tesco this Winter, gave in my bank details as requested for being paid as per the letter contract.

However, in the post today, I've received a Tuxedo prepay card. Yes kids, the same thing you'd give your teenager. I will be paid through this pre-loaded card to save Tesco on their administrative fees.

Infantilising at best I know, however I could suck it up were it not for the fact that it will cost me money to use for bills, direct debits etc. etc. I know I can use it in the shops, but I feel like it's an extra burden on those of us who are picking up extra hours working in a shop. You know, just to pay bills.

What do you think? Has anyone else had this experience?

And for the record, no, the pocketmoney card was not mentioned at all in any of the recruitment gumpf, contract or anywhere outside a Google search which has yielded that Tesco are using it for their temp staff.

Having become over-invested in this along with the outrage it appears that there are three other issues that you might not have considered:

  1. That Tescos dodn't have authorisation to set up a third party account in your name.

  2. That even having one of these cards can negatively affect your credit score.

and 3) Tesco and Tuxedo will have passed your details onto other crappy finance companies and you will be forevermore spammed with zillion percent loan flyers and the like.

Ugh. www.urban75.net/forums/threads/my-employer-has-signed-me-up-for-a-tuxedo-card.236251/

LakieLady · 15/11/2017 14:00

That's it, I'm boycotting Tesco and will beat DP soundly round the head if I find he's going there. Waitrose and Aldi can have my custom from now on.

I think I'll cut my Clubcard in half and post it back to them, with a letter saying why, too.

hamptonhangingpork · 15/11/2017 14:05

To a pp who asked, I did get through to payroll, eventually. After which I called Acas.

They said they didn't have my bank details and when I asked them what happened to the ones in the joiner pack I filled out during my induction, they magically appeared when I was on the telephone.

They said that it was too late to pay me through my bank and they wouldn't do a bacs payment but it would be all fine next payday. They wouldn't roll over my pay to next month's either. They wouldn't cut a cheque. Simply put, they were not interested and I would have to deal with Tuxedo pay if I had any complaints.

As a previous customer of British Gas, and not being a total idiot, I got the distinct impression they were saying anything to get me off the phone.

I put my notice in this morning. There were no supervisors around in my department so I left it on their desk. I saw a team leader carrying it later when I was passing through the checkouts.

So that's that, I'm afraid. I will update if anything else happens though.

So sorry op. It is utterly shit and I'm shocked they could do this to you

If it's any consolation I've tweeted them too and cancelled my delivery order. Fuck em

Good luck in getting another job before Xmas. There are quite a few round our way so I'm hoping it's not too late Flowers

GerdaLovesLili · 15/11/2017 14:19

Good luck Hampton. You deserve better than this.

AlexanderHamilton · 15/11/2017 14:39

Sorry to derail but the situation with booking fees for tickets is slightly different.

Basically the ticket price is the money that belongs to the producers of the show. The booking fee is the bit that the ticket seller gets to keep whether that be a box office at the venue itself or a ticket agent.

Tragicboozyflaccidclown · 15/11/2017 14:40

I’m sorry you’ve been treated so shittily, I’m glad you’ve brought this to peoples attention. How dare Tesco feel they can treat people this way

LakieLady · 15/11/2017 14:42

I've emailed the CEO: [email protected].

Am I overinvested in this?

grobagsforever · 15/11/2017 14:42

@hamptonhangingpork -you're a hero. BTW I've just done my shopping in Sainsbury's.

missingtheolddays · 15/11/2017 14:46

Bloody outrageous! How would they like this be paid in something other than cash?!

Please make a stink about this.

I have also emailed their CEO. In the unlikely event I get a response, I will post.

This is perhaps the first AIBU where everybody agrees YANBU (normally there is some contrary soul who can find something unreasonable about the most reasonable course of action).

I don't think they have to do a credit check, fridgepants, as it's a preloaded card which gives access only to the preloaded funds on the card. Martin Lewis's MSE website recommends this type of card for people who would otherwise struggle to get a credit card. (Plus being handy for students, pocket money etc)

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 15/11/2017 15:43

No credit check required because it is a pre-payment card.

The op can't demand anything of Tuxedo as amicissimma suggests for a few reasons:

  1. They have no contract with her so do not have to act on her instruction.
  1. The card and account probably remain property of Tesco. Certainly for similar schemes that is the case.

3.a) They have no way of knowing the op or the account details provided have any entitlement to the funds.

b) to establish she did they would probably required to verify her identity or at least comply with KYC and anti-money laundering requirements.

More reasons why this is not an appropriate way to pay people who have not specifically consented to be paid in this way.

There is really no need to pay people this way since the basic bank accounts were launched about 15 years ago.

Aridane · 15/11/2017 15:50

I have also emailed Tuxedo - even more invested than LakieLady!

Aridane · 15/11/2017 15:52

Why am I not surprised that SportDirect do this too?

Have received a holding response from Tesco CEO office

natorganise · 15/11/2017 17:10

I run a workplace campaigning site. We've got a petition about those tuxedo cards (you can see it and sign it here: platform.organise.org.uk/campaigns/tesco-prepaidcards)

I reckon we can get the petition in the newspapers as it's so unfair that Tesco pay festive staff like this. Would you be up for being interviewed? It can be completely anonymous. But it'll make it much more likely the story gets covered and we can get tesco to pay you properly.

If you'd like to be involved, can you drop me a message on 07875096740 or email me at [email protected]?

Cheers,

Nat x

Nat, your link has an excess bracket at the end.

sleeponeday · 15/11/2017 17:44

Tesco have some very nice Christmas bits this year, and they're reasonably priced, but after reading this I don't care; Fair Trade should apply to our own workers, too. Wouldn't touch the exploitative fuckers with a bargepole if they do this sort of thing.

What absolute evil sods their senior management must be, to pass some of their trading costs onto their lowest paid staff in this way. Vile, vile, vile.

MumW · 15/11/2017 17:45

I digress slightly but I only ever shop at Tesco/Sainsbury/etc when I want something I can't get in Aldi and even then, I buy from whichever shop has the item on the best discount.

Really hoping that their discounts are lost leaders as I very rarely buy anything from them at full price.

This comparison site is invaluable for this information: www.mysupermarket.co.uk/

sleeponeday · 15/11/2017 17:45

natorganise I just get an error message? Hopefully it's overloaded with people trying to sign, but thought I should mention, anyway.
