to be annoyed by being paid for work via a pocketmoney card?

Just want to see if I am being unreasonable here.

I've picked up a job as a Christmas Temp at Tesco this Winter, gave in my bank details as requested for being paid as per the letter contract.

However, in the post today, I've received a Tuxedo prepay card. Yes kids, the same thing you'd give your teenager. I will be paid through this pre-loaded card to save Tesco on their administrative fees.

Infantilising at best I know, however I could suck it up were it not for the fact that it will cost me money to use for bills, direct debits etc. etc. I know I can use it in the shops, but I feel like it's an extra burden on those of us who are picking up extra hours working in a shop. You know, just to pay bills.

What do you think? Has anyone else had this experience?

And for the record, no, the pocketmoney card was not mentioned at all in any of the recruitment gumpf, contract or anywhere outside a Google search which has yielded that Tesco are using it for their temp staff.

Yes, for once The Daily Mail need to pick this up! It's appalling, even if the staff members are teens.

I realise that I was being rude and forgot the rules of Mumsnet.

Here's a diagram.

OP are you happy for people to tweet about this and report the thread to MNHQ for you?

LazyDailyMailJournos · 14/11/2017 13:33

Excellent diagram though!

hamptonhangingpork · 14/11/2017 13:33

Thanks for all your advice everyone, I really mean it.

Once my toddler is down for a nap, I will be making calls / sending e-mails.

It's fine for this to be tweeted. People need to know!

Righto.

headintheproverbial · 14/11/2017 13:34

That is appalling.

What does the contract say? Most contracts (whether employment or otherwise) would say something like 'the salary/wages shall be paid into your nominated bank account on or around xyz of the month'. Or similar.

I'd go to the press with this! Daily fail do your worst.

TheWitchAndTrevor · 14/11/2017 13:36

Well it seems like a good way for Tesco to be able employ lots of people who don't have bank accounts Hmm

Gazelda · 14/11/2017 13:36

I’m stunned that Tesco seem to have been operating this system for years without a huge backlash!

hamptonhangingpork · 14/11/2017 13:37

That's fine witch. It really is.

But I already have a bank account and don't you think it's a bit wrong to set up a prepay card with no notification / explanation to someone unsolicited?

brasty · 14/11/2017 13:37

Since it is for very temporary staff, most people will not have the time or inclination to properly challenge it.

reetgood · 14/11/2017 13:39

These are the charges associated with tuxedo prepaid cards. I’m not sure which type you would be using but the fees are stupid. www.tuxedoprepaid.com/fees/

LazyDailyMailJournos · 14/11/2017 13:39

Have reported to MNHQ. If people are on Twitter then you can tweet @Tesco

BettysCandle · 14/11/2017 13:42

Excellent diagram!

I'm absolutely appalled by this. 100% shocked. What a disgusting thing to do- you can't pay bills with it and you have to pay to withdraw from cashpoints.

Tesco should be ashamed of themselves.

BatteredBreadedOrSouthernFried · 14/11/2017 13:42

Brilliant diagram Op! Grin aren’t you worried about being identified from the picture though? Wink

TheWitchAndTrevor · 14/11/2017 13:42

Sorry Hampton my line of thought didn't come through in my post.

Hard to say..........

Just how traceable is the money from Tesco to an employee who doesn't have a bank account or maybe any other documents of verification, especially if employees routinely have obstacles(lack of employee number) put in the way of been able to access pay slips?

Confuzzlediddled · 14/11/2017 13:43

I vaguely remember when my dd started with Tesco her first wage was on one of those cards, if I remember rightly it was because she hadn't completed a form giving her bank details correctly?

brasty · 14/11/2017 13:45

I would contact ACAS about wage slips. It is illegal not to provide a wage slip in some form.

3Boys1Mum · 14/11/2017 13:45

Have I just read this right.

Max £1500 annual cash withdrawal?

Worrying.

solylluvia · 14/11/2017 13:45

Found this on the Tuxedo website via Google:

www.tuxedomoneysolutions.com/our-partners/clients/tesco/

30 new cards a week issued to Tesco employees.
£1.9 million paid to people working at Tesco since their launch.

Absolutely outrageous. The Guardian would also be interested, I think.

positivity123 · 14/11/2017 13:55

I used to work at Tesco and I'm pretty sure that they only pay people via this system when people haven't provided their bank details or there is an issue with the bank details so that people still have access to money (rather than not pay them).
Happened to a boy I worked with who could then move money across to his bank once Tesco payroll had his details.

Slarti · 14/11/2017 13:55

Another prime example of Tory Britain.

ToElleWithIt · 14/11/2017 14:01

This is utterly appalling. A further example of more costs being pushed on to those who can afford it least.

I would not be surprise to hear that Tesco were getting some sort of Kick-back / referral fee for using Tuxedo.

This needs to be perused. The data protection angle may have merit.

BettysCandle · 14/11/2017 14:03

I've honestly never wanted the Daily Mail to read a thread before, but I do now!
